  • The presence of voids behind tunnel linings is very likely to result in settlement or structural collapse. One proposed method of detecting such voids by non-destructive method is radar. More than effectively judging the existence of voids behind tunnel linings, this study aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids. To acquire directional information and estimate the shape of three-dimensional voids, the radar of three-dipole antenna type is used. As a foundation to this ongoing research, an investigation of microwave polarization methods using three-dipole antenna carried out with various void orientations and void geometries. As a result, it is clarified that the response of four microwave polarization modes depends on void geometry and thus there is a possibility of identifying the geometry and orientation (the shape) of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type.

  • For the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) shape of microscopic objects through shape from focus (SFF) methods, usually a single focus measure operator is employed. However, it is difficult to compute accurate depth map using a single focus measure due to different textures, light conditions and arbitrary object surfaces. Moreover, real images with diverse types of illuminations and contrasts lead to the erroneous depth map estimation through a single focus measure. In order to get better focus measurements and depth map, we have combined focus measure operators by using genetic algorithm. The resultant focus measure is obtained by weighted sum of the output of various focus measure operators. Optimal weights are obtained using genetic algorithm. Finally, depth map is obtained from the refined focus volume. The performance of the developed method is then evaluated by using both the synthetic and real world image sequences. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective in computing accurate depth maps as compared to the existing SFF methods.

  • This paper presents a method for occluded object based motion estimation and tracking system in dynamic image sequences using particle filter with 3D reconstruction. A unique characteristic of this study is its ability to cope with partial occlusion based continuous motion estimation using particle filter inspired from the mirror neuron system in human brain. To update a prior knowledge about the shape or motion of objects, firstly, fundamental 3D reconstruction based occlusion tracing method is applied and object landmarks are determined. And optical flow based motion vector is estimated from the movement of the landmarks. When arbitrary partial occlusions are occurred, the continuous motion of the hidden parts of object can be estimated by particle filter with optical flow. The resistance of the resulting estimation to partial occlusions enables the more accurate detection and handling of more severe occlusions.

  • This paper analyzes the fatigue-life of welded joints using the notch stress approach. In the notch stress approach, the notch effects are usually approximated by introducing weld-bead parameters for the local detailed weld joints. The actual bead shape is complex and 3-dimensional. It may also greatly influence the fatigue strength. In this study, the welded shape was modeled using a 3D-scanner. The critical distance method was adopted in the evaluation of the fatigue effective notch stress for the weldments. Fatigue life tests were performed to verify the present method of fatigue life estimation for two types of welded plates with longitudinal attachments. The estimated results of the present methods were applied to the results of the experiment. The results of the analysis showed that the scatter of fatigue-life for the experimental data expressed in the nominal stress was significantly reduced by applying the effective fatigue stress of the present study.

  • According to recent research on leak-rate estimates to assess rupture probabilities of nuclear piping which contains a circumferential surface/through-wall cracks due to PWSCC, i.e., xLPR (Extremely Low Probability of Rupture) program, it has been revealed that the use of crack shape with an idealized circumferential through-wall crack during actual crack growth can lead to overestimate of the leak-rate. Thus, for accurate estimation of the leak-rate during crack growth, the more realistic crack shape that can simulate the crack shape transition from surface crack to through-wall crack should be used. In this context, in the present study, the elastic crack opening displacement of slanted circumferential through-wall crack in thick-walled cylinder was proposed based on 3-dimensional elastic finite element fracture mechanics analyses. To propose the elastic crack opening displacement of slanted circumferential through-wall crack in thick-walled cylinder, the geometric variables affecting crack opening displacement, i.e., thickness of cylinder, reference inner crack length and slant crack ratio were systematically varied. In terms of loading conditions, axial tension, global bending moment and internal pressure were considered. The present results can be applied to calculate the leak-rate considering more realistic crack shape transition from surface crack to idealized through-wall crack, and can be expected to enhance current leak-rate estimation scheme, for instance, in xLPR program etc.

  • In this paper, the physical properties of actual fabric data are predicted using the Cusick drape system, which is a means of measuring the physical properties of fabrics. Using a three-dimensional volumetric system, the cloth data of the actual Cusick drape system is acquired in a three-dimensional point cloud format. Cusick drape simulation is performed using mesh data of the same shape and size as the fabric, and the physical parameters of the draped fabric most similar to the actual draped fabric are acquired.

  • The probability of failure is used to analyze the reliability of three dimensional slope failure, instead of conventional factor of safety. The strength parameters are assumed to be normal variated and beta variated. These are interval estimated under the specified confidence level and maximum likelihood estimation. The pseudonormal and beta random variables are generated using the uniform probability transformation method according to central limit theorem and rejection method. By means of a Monte-Carlo Simulation, the probability of failure is defined as; Pf=M/N N : Total number of trials M : Total number of failures Some of the conclusions derived from the case study include; 1. Three dimensional factors of safety are generally much higher than 2-D factors of safety. However situations appear to exist where the 3-D factor of safety can be lower than the 2-D factor of safety. 2. The F3/F2 ratio appears to be quite sensitive to c and ${\phi}$ and to the shape of the 3-D shear surface and the slope but not to be to the unit weight of soil. 3. In cases that strength parameters are assumed to be normal variated and beta variated, the relationships between safety factor and the probability of failure are fairly consistent, regardless of the shape of the 3-D shear surface and the slope. 4. As the c-value is increased, the probability of failure for the same safety factor is increased and as the ${\phi}-value$ is increased, the probability of failure for the same safety factor is decreased.

  • Moving objects are spatiotemporal data that change their location or shape continuously over time. Their location coordinates are periodically measured and stored i3l the application systems. The linear function is mainly used to estimate the location information that is not in the system at the query time point. However, a new method is needed to improve uncertainties of the location representation, because the location estimation by linear function induces the estimation error. This paper proposes an application method of the cubic spline interpolation in order to reduce deviation of the location estimation by linear function. First, we define location information of the moving object on the two-dimensional space. Next, we apply the cubic spline interpolation to location estimation of the proposed data model and describe algorithm of the estimation operation. Finally, the precision of this estimation operation model is experimented. The experimentation comes out more accurate results than the method by linear function.
