  • To increase the machine accuracy by improving the stiffness of spindle bearings, preload was applied to the spindle bearings. The methods of fixed position preload, convertible preload, constant pressure preload, and variable preload are used to apply the preload to the spindle bearing. The previous studies performed by the author of this study were variable preload methods using rubber pressure and centrifugal force based on mechanical systems. This study proposed a toggle joint mechanism that could be applied to variable preload method using centrifugal force and rubber pressure to increase the preload. Also, a finite element analysis was conducted to predict the deformation of the rubber and change of the preload. And the analysis results showed that the preload by the device using rubber pressure only was increased by the toggle joint mechanism using rubber pressure.

  • This paper deals with a copper die casting induction motor which has several advantages of motor performance. The developed motor is used as spindle motor in machining center. The dynamic characteristic analysis of rotor is dealt with for precision machining. The critical speed of rotor considering rotation and gyroscopic effect should be above operating speed, 18,000 rpm, and have a 201 % sufficient separation margin. Also, the 3-D unbalance vibration response analysis is performed and enabled the prediction of the expected vibration amplitude by unbalance in high speed. The unbalance vibration responses of each position on the rotor are satisfied with allowable vibration displacement of API 611 standard according to balancing G grade(G 0.4, G 2.5, G 6.3). Copper die casting high speed induction motor is successfully developed and verified by experiment.

  • This is one case report of the extremely rare congenital cardiac malformation, Double-outlet of left ventricle in corrected transposition of great arteries. 11-year-old boy complained acrocyanosis and exertional dyspnea, the parents noticed cyanosis since birth. Physical examination revealed acrocyanosis, clubbed fingers and toes, G-III pansystolic murmur on 2nd and 3rd ICS, LSB. Right heart catheterization revealed significant $O_2$ jump in ventricular level. Right and left ventriculography showed the both catheters arriving in the same ventricle i.e. anterior chamber, morphological left ventricle was in right and anterior position, simultaneous visualization of aorta and pulmonary artery and aorta locating anterior and right side of pulmonary artery. Echo cardiogram surely disclosed interventricular septum. Conclusively it was clarified that the patient has Double-outlet of left ventricle and corrected transposition of great arteries [S.L.D.]. Operation was performed to correct the anomalies under extracorporeal circulation with intermittent moderate hypothermia. Right-sided ventriculotomy disclosed the following findings. 1. Right-sided ventricle was morphological left ventricle. 2. Left-sided ventricle was morphological right ventricle. 3. Right side atrioventricular valve was bicuspid. 4. Left side atrioventricular valve was tricuspid. 5. Aortic valve was superior, anterior and right side of pulmonary valve. 6. Subpulmonary membranous stenosis. 7. Non-committed ventricular septal defect. We made a tunnel between VSD and aorta with Teflon patch so that arterial blood comes through VSD and the tunnel into aorta. After correction the patient needed assisted circulation for 135 min. to have adequate blood pressure. Postoperatively by any means, adequate blood pressure could not be maintained and expired in the evening of operation day.

  • This paper presents a new method for visual servoing to control the pose(position and orientation) of the robotic manipulators for grasping the 3-D moving object whose initial pose and moving informations are unknown by using the stereo camera. The stereo camera is mounted on the end-effector of robotic manipulator. In order to track the current pose of robotic manipulator to the desired pose, we use the image Jacobian, which is described by the differential transform, relating the change in image feature point to the change in the object's pose with respect to the camera. In this paper the simple PD controller is adopted for the robotic manipulator to track the desired pose. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by some computer simulations.

  • Recently, the interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors for electric vehicle (EV) traction motor are being extensively researched because of its high energy density and high efficiency. The traction motor for EV requires high power and high efficiency at the wide driving region. Therefore, it is essential to fully consider the characteristics of the motor from low speed to high-speed driving regions. Especially, when the motor is driven at high speed, a significant centrifugal force is applied to the rotor. Thus, the rotor must be stably structured and be fully endured at the critical speed. In this paper, aims to examine the characteristics of the IPM motor by adjusting the width of air-barrier according to the permanent magnet position which is critical in designing an IPM motor for EV traction motors and to conduct a centrifugal force analysis for grasping mechanical safety.

  • Nowadays, large container ships are continually developed and that's why the bow and stern structural stability problems by slamming become a significant more and more. However, due to the complexity of slamming, it is difficult to consider those problems at the design stage. For this reason, we attempt numerical analysis through SNUFOAM by generating the bow and stern two-dimensional cross-sectional grid in WILS JIP experiment at KRISO. Unlike the conventional method for the computation time saving, by setting the inlet flow conditions referred to the model test, we analyzed the slamming without applying the grid deformation method. As a result, when the stern model, as in the previous studies, it was possible to obtain quantitatively the fluid impulse is close to the experimental results. When the bow model, we can found the change by the position of force sensors which are derived for the bulbous bow and obtained fluid impulse and flow shape at slamming similar to the model test.

  • Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) is involved in synthesizing extracellular polysaccharide (EPS). The gene encoding PGI in Sphingomonas chungbukensis DJ77 was cloned and expressed in E. coli, and the protein was characterized. The pgi gene from DJ77 is 1,503 nucleotides long with 62% GC content and the deduced amino acid sequence shows strong homology with PGIs from other sources. The molecular masses of PGI subunit and native form were estimated to be 50 kDa and 97 kDa, respectively. Four potentially important residues (H361, R245, E330 and K472) were identified by homology modeling. The mutations, H361A, R245A, E330A, R245K and E330D resulted in decrease in Vmax by hundreds fold, however no significant change in Km was observed. These data suggest that the three residues (H361, R245Aand E330) are likely located in the active site and the size as well as the spatial position of side chains of R245 and E330 are crucial for catalysis.

  • Generally, PM BLDC drive system is necessary that the three Hall-ICs evenly be distributed around the stator circumference and encoder be installed in case of the 3 phase motor. So, the Hall-ICs are set up in this motor to detect the main flux from the rotor, and the output signal from Hall-ICs is used to drive a power transistor to control the winding current. However, instead of using three Hall-ICs and encoder, we used only two Hall-ICs for the permanent magnet rotor position and for the speed feedback signals, and also for a micro controller of 16-bit type (80C196KC) with the 3 phase PM BLDC whose six stator and two rotor designed. Two Hall-IC Hc and $H_B$ are placed on the endplate at 120 degree intervals, and with these elements, we estimated information of the others phase in sequence through a rotating rotor.

  • Depth estimation is an essential factor for robot vision, 3D scene modeling, and motion control. The depth estimation method is based on focusing values calculated in a series of images by a single camera at different distance between lens and object. In this paper, we proposed a relative depth estimation method using focus measure. The proposed method is implemented by focus value calculated for each image obtained at different lens position and then depth is finally estimated by considering relative distance of two patterns. We performed various experiments on the effective focus measures for depth estimation by using various patterns and their usefulness.

  • Positioning garlic cloves in upright standing in garlic field has been regarded as a very important job because it affects clove rooting, growing and, eventually, quality and yield in garlic production, Because of the geometrical uniqueness and irregularity of garlic cloves in shape, the planting operation has been conducted by manual work that needs a tremendous human labors and increases garlic production cost. The overall objective of this research was to develop garlic planting machine through investigating physical properties of garlic and designing clove upright positioning device after figuring out the factors affecting metering device and upright clove positioning mechanism. With the outcomes of the metering and posture positioning experiment, a garlic clove planter having twelve planting rows was developed for 37kW type tractor and feasibility test was carried out in the field. And, According to the performance test and cost analysis, the planter could accomplish planting operation of one hectare plot in 6.3 hours giving 48 times better efficiency, 6.3hrs/ha, and 74.2% of production cost reduction effect, 1,092,546won/ha, than the manual works of 299hrs/ha and 282,258won/ha. And, break-even point ofthe planter was calculated as of 2.71 hectares.
