  • This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torch. Series resonant half-bridge topology is presented to be a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. The plasma torch rated for 3MW, 2kA and having the physical size of 1m long is selected to be a high enthalpy source in waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. Circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the existence of load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides high enough ignition voltage around 5KA during ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.

  • The most important factor of the traffic accident on the wet road is a tire slip caused by hydroplaning. Meanwhile, hydroplaning characteristics are influenced very greatly by the vehicle velocity, so it is very important to reveal the relation between hydroplaning and the vehicle velocity. Since the experiment study is considerably limited, recently the numerical simulation using finite element method(FEM) and finite volume method(FVM) is widely adopted. In this paper, the effect of the vehicle velocity on the hydroplaning characteristics is investigated through the hydroplaning analysis using MSC/Dytran.

  • The momentum and kinetic turbulent energy carried by the wind to a stratified lake lead to basin-scale motions, which provide a major driving force for vertical and horizontal mixing. A three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model was applied to Lake Tahoe, located between California and Nevada, USA, to simulate the dominant basin-scale internal waves in the deep lake. The results demonstrated that the model well represents the temporal and vertical variations of water temperature that allows the internal waves to be energized correctly at the basin scale. Both the model and thermistor chain (TC) data identified the presence of Kelvin modes and Poincare mode internal waves. The lake was weakly stratified during the study period, and produced large amplitude (up to 60 m) of internal oscillations after several wind events and partial upwelling near the southwestern lake. The partial upwelling and followed coastal jets could be an important feature of basin-scale internal waves because they can cause re-suspension and horizontal transport of fine particles from nearshore to offshore. The internal wave dynamics can be also associated with the distributions of water quality variables such as dissolved oxygen and nutrients in the lake. Thus, the basin-scale internal waves and horizontal circulation processes need to be accurately modeled for the correct simulation of the dissolved and particulate contaminants, and biogeochemical processes in the lake.

  • In this present study, we made a first attempt to investigate physical transformations of incident waves in surf and swash zone and hydrodynamic phenomena of detached and submerged breakwaters. For an accurate simulation of the complicated wave deformation, Three-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation has been developed recently and expanded properly for the current applications, which is able to simulate an accurate and direct WAve Structure Sandy seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-3D). LES-WASS-3D has been validated through the comparison with experimental results for limited cases, and has been used for the simulation of wave run-up on sandy beach, mean fluid flows over and around submerged structures and swash zone (alongshore/rip current), and spatial distribution of wave height in wide fluid regions. In addition, a strategy of efficient deployment ($Y/L_i=1.50{\sim}1.75$, $W/L_r=0.50$) of the submerged breakwaters has been discussed.

  • A general purpose viscous flow solver Ansys CFX is used to study a Savonius type wave energy converter in a 3D numerical viscous wave tank. This paper presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the effect of blade configuration on the performance of 3 bladed Savonius rotors for wave energy extraction. A piston-type wave generator was incorporated in the computational domain to generate the desired incident waves. A complete OWC system with a 3-bladed Savonius rotor was modeled in a three dimensional numerical wave tank and the hydrodynamic conversion efficiency was estimated. The flow over the rotors is assumed to be two-dimensional (2D), viscous, turbulent and unsteady. The CFX code is used with a solver of the coupled conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, with an implicit time scheme and with the adoption of the hexahedral mesh and the moving mesh techniques in areas of moving surfaces. Turbulence is modeled with the k.e model. Simulations were carried out simultaneously for the rotor angle and the helical twist. The results indicate that the developed models are suitable to analyze the water flows both in the chamber and in the turbine. For the turbine, the numerical results of torque were compared for all the cases.

  • Mekong River is the world's $10^{th}$ longest river and runs through China's Yunnan province, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. And Tonle Sap Lake, the largest fresh water body in Southeast Asia and the heart of Mekong River system, covers an area $2,500-3,000Km^2$ in dry season and $10,000-16,000Km^2$ in wet season. As previously noted, the water within Sap river flows from the Mekong River to Tonle Sap Lake in flood season (between June and October) and backward to Mekong River in dry season. Recently the flow regime of Sap River might be significantly affected by the development of large dams in upstream region of Mekong River. This paper aims at basic study about the large scale flood inundation of Cambodia using by CAESAR-Lisflood. CAESAR-Lisflood is a geomorphologic / Landscape evolution model that combines the Lisflood-FP 2d hydrodynamic flow model (Bates et al, 2010) with the CAESAR geomorphic model to simulate flow hydrograph and erosion/deposition in river catchments and reaches over time scales from hours to 1000's of years. This model is based on the simplified full Saint-Venant Equation so that it can simulate the interacted flow of between Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake especially focusing on the flow direction change of Sap River by season.

  • This study estimated response of water duality and pollutant behavior according to the discharge and reuse of treated wastewater by three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic model, and suggest plan that water quality management and environmental restoration in the coastal area including urban stream of Yeosu, Korea. Dispersions of low-saline water and COD by treated wastewater loads (design facility capacity, about $110,000m^3/d$) were very limited in near of effluent site. Nutrients, however, increase compared to the other water quality factors, especially total nitrogen was very sensitive to input loads. When reuse some of treated wastewater to Yeondeung stream, nitrogen was big influence on estuarine water quality. Although current characteristics of treated wastewater such as discharge and water quality were negligible to the change of marine environment, effluent concentration of COD, TN and TP, especially 40% of TN, are reduced within the allowable pollutant loads for satisfy environmental capacity and recommended water duality criteria. Also, controls of input point/non-point sources to Yeondeung stream and base concentration of pollutants in coastal sea itself are very necessary.

  • In this study the migration experiment using packed column with crushed tuff was conducted as a basic research to develop migration model of radionuclides through geologic media. The main emphasis was put on evaluating the validity of migration models. For this, two models were introduced: one is the model which is based on the assumption of instantaneous equilibrium reaction and the other the model based on kinetic process such as intraparticle diffusion. The coefficient of hydrodynamic dispersion in packed column was determined using iodine as nonsorbing tracer. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient, D$_{L}$ was shown to be 0.11$\times$10$^{-2}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/min under the condition of the column porosity of 0.483 and the average water velocity of 0.915$\times$10$^{-2}$ cm/min. The distribution coefficient, Kd of Cs-137 on crushed tuff was 11.3 cc/g at the concentration of 2$\times$10$^{-6}$ M and the temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$. The breakthrough curve of Cs-137 through packed column was shown to have an asymmetric curve in which long trailing tail appears at the end part of the curve. The results obtained from the comparison of introduced models with experimental data indicated that the mass transfer model with intraparticle diffusion as rate-controlling step simulated the behaviors of Cs-137 migration more adequately, when compared with the bulk reaction model in which the assumption of instantaneous equilibrium reaction was maded. Consequently, the intraparticle diffusion was found to be an important factor in the migration of Cs-137 through packed column.n.

  • The non-float midwater pair trawl was effective in the mouth opening and control of the working depth in midwater and bottom. In contrast, we confirmed that it was difficult to keep the net at surface above 30 m of the depth by means of the full scale experiment in the field and the model test in the circulation water channel. To solve this problem, the kites were attached to the head rope of the non-float midwater pair trawl. In this study, four kinds of the model experiments were carried out with the purpose of applying the kite to the korean midwater pair trawl. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The working depth of the non-float midwater pair trawl with the kite was shallower than that of the proto type and non-float type. The working depth of the kite type was approximately 20m with 2 kites and about 5m with 4 kites under 4.0 knot. The working depth was almost constant but the depth of the head rope sank approximately 15m and 10m according to the increase in the front weight and the wing-end weight, respectively. The changing aspect of the working depth was constant, but the depth of the head rope sank approximately 22m according to the increase in the lower warp length (dL). 2. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type was almost increased in a linear form in accordance with the flow speed increase from 2.0 to 5.0 knot. The increasing grate of the hydrodynamic resistance tended to increase in accordance with the increase in flow speed. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type was larger approximately 5~10 ton larger than that of the non-float type and the proto type. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type increased approximately 3ton with the changing of the front weight from 1.40 to 3.50 ton and approximately 4 ton with the changing of the wing-end weight from 0 to 1.11 ton and approximately 5.5 ton with the changing lower warp length (dL) from 0 to 40 m, respectively. 3. The net height of the kite type was increased approximately 10 m with the change in the kite area from $2,270mm^2$ to 4,540 $\textrm{mm}^2$. The net height of the kite type was aproximately 50 m and 30 m larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type, respectively. The changed aspect of the net width was approximately 5m with the variation of the flow speed from 2.0 to 5.0 knot. 4. The filtering volume of the kite type was larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type by 28%, 34% at 2.0 knot of the flow speed and 42%, 41% at 3.0 knot, and 62%, 45% at 4.0 knot, and 74%, 54% at 5.0knot, respectively. The optimal towing speed was approximately 3.0 knot for the proto type and was over 4.0 knot for the non-float type, and the optimal towing speed reached 5.0 knot for the kite type. 5. The opening efficiency of the kite type was approximately 50% and 25% larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type, respectively.
