  • Dam reservoirs play a particularly crucial role in processing the allochthonous and the autochthonous dissolved (DOC) and the particulate (POC) organic carbon and in the budget of global carbon cycle. However, the complex physical and biogeochemical processes make it difficult to capture the temporal and spatial dynamics of the DOC and the POC in reservoirs. The purpose of this study was to simulate the dynamics of the DOC and the POC in Daecheong Reservoir using the 3-D hydrodynamics and water quality model (AEM3D), and to quantify the mass balance through the source and sink fluxes analysis. The AEM3D model was calibrated using field data collected in 2017 and showed reasonable performance in the water temperature and the water quality simulations. The results showed that the allochthonous and autochthonous proportions of the annual total organic carbon (TOC) loads in the reservoir were 55.5% and 44.5%, respectively. In season, the allochthonous loading was the highest (72.7%) in summer, while in autumn, the autochthonous loading was the majority (77.1%) because of the basal metabolism of the phytoplankton. The amount of the DOC discharged to downstream of the dam was similar to the allochthonous load into the reservoir. However, the POC was removed by approximately 96.6% in the reservoir mainly by the sedimentation. The POC sedimentation flux was 36.21 g-C/㎡/yr. In terms of space, the contribution rate of the autochthonous organic carbon loading was high in order of the riverine zone, the transitional zone, and the lacustrine zone. The results of the study provide important information on the TOC management in the watersheds with extensive stagnant water, such as dam reservoirs and weir pools.

  • In this paper, the authors investigate theoretically the motion and longitudinal strength of ships among waves talking account of the effects of nonlinearities such as the hull shape, bottom emergence, and hydrodynamic impact. Incidentally the ship is treated as an elastic beam in heading wave condition regarding characteristics of slamming and whipping-according to the variation in the range of a quarter length of the ship forward and the increase of the elastic modes up to 4-th vibration mode were investigated by the present theory. Calculations are performed for 97m container ship and its validity is confirmed by a series of model tests. Conclusions obtained are as follows; 1) Acceleration and pressure estimated by the present theory are in good accordance with experiments. 2) The present non-linear theory may be applied for estimating longitudinal bending moment of ships in slamming and whipping conditions. 3) In investigation of the characteristic in response according to shape variation for parts under draft and vow-flare in the range of a quarter length of the ship forward, dynamic responses due to the former were much more conspicuous than those due to the later. 4) In the maximum bending moment, the considering case up to 2-the mode are larger, about $10{\sim}15%$, than that up to 4-th mode.

  • Recent high-resolution, high-sensitivity observations of protostellar jets have shown many to possess an underlying 'wiggle' structure. HH 211 is one such example where recent sub-mm observations revealed a clear reflection-symmetric wiggle. An explanation for this is that the HH211 jet source is moving as part of a protobinary system. Here we test this assumption by simulating HH211 through 3D hydrodynamic simulations using the pluto code with a molecular chemistry and cooling module, and initial conditions based on an analytical model derived from SMA observations. Molecular chemistry allows us to accurately plot synthetic molecular emission maps and position-velocity diagrams for direct comparison to observations, enabling us to test the observational assumptions and put constraints on the physical parameters of HH211. Our preliminary results show that the reflection-symmetric wiggle can be recreated through the assumption of a jet source being part of a binary system.

  • The present paper deals with the seismic response analysis and the evaluation of most likely failure modes for a water storage structure. For the stress analysis, a 3-D mathematical model has been adopted to represent the structure appropriately. The structure has been analyzed for both static and seismic loads. Seismic analysis has been carried out considering the hydrodynamic effects of the contained water. Based on the stress analyses results, the most likely failure modes viz. tensile cracking and compressive crushing of concrete for the various structural elements; caused by the seismic event have been investigated. Further an attempt has also been made to quantify the initial leakage rate and average emptying time for the structure during seismic event after evaluating the various crack parameters viz. crack-width and crack-spacing at the locations of interest. The results are presented with reference to peak ground acceleration (PGA) of the seismic event. It has been observed that, an increase in PGA would result in significant increase in stresses and crack width in the various structural members. Significant increase in initial leakage rate and decrease in average emptying time for the structure has also been observed with the increase in PGA.

  • Numerical model tests are done in order to evaluate impact zone of low salinity water on outer region of the developing Saemankeum reservoir. Also saline mixing processes are investigated f3r the inner reservoir with consideration of Mankyoung and Donjin riverine flood discharges when sea water is passing freely through gate. In these analyses 2-d ADCIRC, 3-d TIDED3D and CE-QUAL-ICM models are used. Through models tests, it is found that inner reservoir mixing process caused by inflow of outer sea water occurs gradually. It takes at least one month for complete mixing on Mankyoung part and 6 month on Dongjin part of the reservoir. When Sinsi or Garyeok gates are opened to control inner reservoir level, discharging velocities decrease exponentially from the gates, but show very strong currents of 0.5m/sec to the 10Km region apart. These results imply that hydrodynamic circulation and ecosystem of frontal region of the Saemankeum dike might be affected in amount by gate operations, since low saline inner waters are discharged periodically at ebb tide according to tidal level.

  • In this study, we perform the structural analysis of a floating offshore wind turbine tower by considering the dynamic response of the floating platform. A multibody system consisting of three blades, a hub, a nacelle, the platform, and the tower is used to model the floating wind turbine. The blades and the tower are modeled as flexible bodies using three-dimensional beam elements. The aerodynamic force on the blades is calculated by the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with hub rotation. The hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and mooring forces are considered for the platform. The structural dynamic responses of the tower are simulated by numerically solving the equations of motion. From the simulation results, the time history of the internal forces at the nodes, such as the bending moment and stress, are obtained. In conclusion, the internal forces are compared with those obtained from static analysis to assess the effects of wave loads on the structural stability of the tower.

  • The use of air diffuser system to ameliorate the reservoir by breaking stratification is now widespread. This study focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of bubble plumes, which is the major mechanism of destratification and their combined effect of adjacent plumes on destratification efficiency. By introducing 2-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) technique, we could suggest the optimal diffuser spacing having optimal destratification efficiency by simply analyzing the complex destratification procedures varying with the seasonal stratification intensity and bubble flow rate. Lab experiments were also carried out to verify CFD model in thermally stratified fresh water which quite differs from former researches using salts. This study showed that the mixing efficiency strongly depends on the spacing of neighboring plumes. When diffuser spacing is lower than 1.5 times the depth, the combined effect is stronger; as Plume Number(PN) is increased, the efficiency is strongly affected by spacing. If the distance is shorter than the depth of water, the efficiency increases linearly in proportion to PN. Otherwise, the efficiency increases non-linearly. These findings suggest that the combined effect should be more quantitatively taken into consideration for design and operation of air-diffuser destratification system, and recommend that the optimal destratification efficiency will be when plume number is 1000 and the spacing between neighboring diffusers is 1.5 times the depth.

  • The midwater pair trawl which is being used at present in Korea have several problems. Firstly, it is difficult to control the net height on high towing speed. Secondly, net breaking often occurs owing to floats and thirdly, the volume of net on the net drum is so large. This study is aiming for examining the possibility of application for the Korean midwater pair trawl through the model experiment of non-float midwater pair trawl. The model of non-float midwater pair trawl was manufactured as 1/100 of the full scale net which is being used in bottom pair trawl for 850ps class considering the Tauti's Similarity law. The model experiment was carried out to analyze the opening efficiency according to the variation of lower warp length and the opening efficiency was investigated between th proto type and non-float type. The results obtained can be summarized as follows ; 1. The hydrodynamic resistance of non-float type was about 10~20% smaller than that of the proto type and it increased about 1ton according to the increase of dL at the condition of the same flow speed. The resistance acting on the lower warp decreased about 5% but that of the upper warp increased according to the increase of lower warp length (dL) at the condition of the same flow speed. 2. The net height of the non-float type decreased almost linearly according as the increased of flow speed and it increased in a logarithmic functional form with the increase of the lower warp length at the condition of the same flow speed. On the decreasing rate of the net height, the non-float type was lower than the proto type and the difference of the decreasing rate was about 12% at 3.0 knot, 25% at 4.0 knot, 25% at 4.0 knot respectively when dL was 30m. 3. The net width of non-float type was not varied so much as only 2m range and was larger than that of proto type. 4. The mouth area of non-float type decreased in a exponential functional form. On the decreasing rate of the mouth area, the non-float type was lower than the proto type. The filtering volume increased in a logarithmic functional form with increasing flow speed and the filtering volume of proto type decreased steeply over 3.0knot, but that of non-float type increased until 4.0knot. 5. The optimal length of lower warp was when the value of dL was about 30m and the optimal position of front weight was at the connection point of four net pendants.
