Hybrid Phase Excitation Method for Improving Efficiency of 7-Phase BLDC Motors for Ship Propulsion Systems

  • This paper proposes a hybrid phase windings excitation method for improving the efficiency of a 7-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor in the electric propulsion system of a ship. The electrical losses of a BLDC motor system depend on the operating region and the number of excited phase windings (2-phase, 4-phase or general 6-phase windings). In this paper the operating region and torque/speed characteristics according to the motor rotation speed and propeller load are analyzed for a number of excitation methods. In addition, it analyzes the electrical losses of the system under each of the excitation methods in the entire operating region of the motor. In every sampling time, the proposed control method calculates the electrical loss of the system for each of the excitation methods and operates a 7-phase BLDC motor by selecting the excitation method that results a decreased electrical loss at the operating speed. The usefulness of the proposed control algorithm is verified through experimental results.

  • The perovskite phase in PZN-PMN-PT (Pb(Zn, Mg)1/3Nb2/3O3-PbTiO3) pseudoternary ceramics was stabilized by the addition of excess constituent divalent oxides (PbO, MgO and ZnO). The excess addition of 5mol% MgO or 7.5mol% PbO fully stabilized the perovskite phase. The enhanced diffuse phase transition (DPT) and the decrease in the electrical resistivity observed in the presence of excess ZnO or MgO were interpreted in terms of the additional formation of negatively charged, short-range ordered 1:1 domains with a concomitant generation of charge carriers, holes.

  • Coumarin and its derivatives occur widely in nature. Many attempts were made for synthesis of various coumarin derivatives because of their interesting biological activities. In this study, solid phase synthetic approach of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)coumarin was achieved for combinatorial synthesis of substituted 3-phenylcoumarin analogues. Starting from 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid methyl ester, release of 3-(4-hydroxypnehyl)coumarin from polymer support was accom-plished.

  • This paper presents a resonant step-down DC/DC converter to reduce the voltage stresses of a 3-phase inverter module under the three-phase AC utility line condition. Under this condition, a conventional 3-phase inverter module suffers from high voltage stresses as a result of the high rectified DC link voltage; hence, a high-cost high-voltage-rating inverter module must be used. However, using the proposed converter, a low-cost low-voltage-rating inverter module may be adopted to drive the motor even under the 3-phase AC line condition. The proposed converter, which can be realized with small size inductor and low-voltage-rating semiconductor devices, operates at a high-efficiency mode because of the zero-current switching operations of all the semiconductor devices. The operational principles are explained and a design example is provided in the study. Experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed converter.

  • A two-phase UASB system was operated for high-rate treatment of concentrated distillery wastewater. The phase separation was obtained by adjusting pH in each reactor. When influent SS concentration was 4.1/g/l, the first phase UASB reactor was effectively operated up to the loading rate of 16.5kg $COD/m^3.day$, producing 3.9g HAc/l.day. In the methanogenic UASB reactor, loading rate up to 44kg $COD/m^3.day$ could be applied while removing 80% of influent COD with a specific gas production of 16.5 l/l. day. After the formation granular sludge in both reactors, it was possible to maintain the appropriate pH in the first phase only by recirculating the effluent from methanogenic phase without the addition of alkaline chemicals.

Resolution of Tocainide and Its Analogues on a Doubly Tethered N-CH3 Amide Chiral Stationary Phase Based on (+)-(18-Crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic Acid

  • A doubly tethered $N-CH_3$ amide chiral stationary phase (CSP 4) based on (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid was applied to the resolution of an antiarrythmic agent, tocainide, and its analogues and the chromatographic resolution results were compared with those on a singly tethered N-H amide CSP (CSP 1), a singly tethered $N-CH_3$ amide CSP (CSP 2) and a doubly tethered N-H amide CSP (CSP 3) under an identical aqueous mobile phase condition. CSP 4 was found to be generally better than other CSPs in terms of the separation factors (${\alpha}$) and resolutions (RS). The retention times of analytes denoted by the retention factors ($k_1$) on CSP 4 were quite long compared to those on other CSPs because of the improved lipophilicity of CSP 4. The long retention times of analytes on CSP 4 were successfully controlled by the addition of a small amount of ammonium acetate to aqueous mobile phase without hurting the chiral recognition efficiency. The variation of the content and type of organic and acidic modifier in aqueous mobile phase was found not to change the chiral recognition efficiency significantly.

  • Recently, efforts to maximize battery life in progress with an increase in the demand for portable devices. In this paper, we propose multi-phase buck converter with fast transient response. Multi-phase buck converter may be used for the output capacitor of small size because the ripple cancellation effect, it is possible to use an inductor having an inductance less. The portable device for quick change from standby mode to active 4-phase design structure was given a fast transient response. The proposed multi-phase buck converter was fabricated using a 0.18 um CMOS process and the supply voltage ranges from 2.7V to 3.3V, the maximum load current is 500mA and settling time is 10us.

The Effect of Misch Metal Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Property of Rapidly Solidified AZ91 Alloy (급속응고한 AZ91 합금의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성에 미치는 Misch metal 첨가의 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of misch metal addition on the microstructure and mechanical property of rapidly solidified AZ91 alloy by melt spinning process. As the contents of misch metal(rare earth element:Ce,La, Nd, Pr)was increased, the microstructure of RS ribbons and extrudates became finer than those of AZ91, and RE related phases($Al_{11}RE_3$, $Al_2RE$) were formed. At room temperature, the rapidly solidified AZ91+1 wt%Mm alloy showed the highest tensile strength, 430 MPa due to precipitation strengthening of${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase and Al11RE3 phase. At the elevated temperature, the mechanical property of AZ01+3 wt%Mm alloy was higher than those of other Mg alloys. The reasons were that $Al_{11}La_3$ phase was thermally stable and suppressed the grain growth. In contrast with $Al_{11}La_3$ phase, ${\beta}$ phase was thermally unstable and could not suppress the grain growth at the elevated temperature. Therefore, Al11RE3 phase contributed to improve the thermal stability of RS AZ91 Alloy.

  • A phase shedding control algorithm to increase efficiency of 3-Phase interleaved boost converter is proposed. Conventional interleaved converter has low efficiency under the light load condition. In this paper, the number of phase is controlled in accordance with the load condition to increase the light load efficiency. The validity of proposed phase control algorithm is verified by simulation results based on measured efficiency.

Analysis of Effects of Phase Noise in Radar System (위상잡음이 레이더 시스템에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • In this paper, the effects of phase noise on the radar system were analyzed in terms of 3 point of view. The impact(s) on the compressed pulse waveform, the FMICW(Frequency Modulated Interrupted Continuous Wave) radar performance and the receiver sensitivity were investigated. From the investigation, it was indicated that the phase noise over 10 kHz offset frequency makes the side lobe level of compressed pulse worse. Also it was founded that the FMICW radar performance, especially at the noise level of range profile, is related to the phase noise. Finally, the investigation showed that the phase noise at local oscillator affects the receiver sensitivity.
