  • The Korean Integrated Model (KIM) forecast system was extended to assimilate Horizontal Line-Of-Sight (HLOS) wind observations from the Atmospheric Laser Doppler Instrument (ALADIN) on board the Atmospheric Dynamic Mission (ADM)-Aeolus satellite. Quality control procedures were developed to assess the HLOS wind data quality, and observation operators added to the KIM three-dimensional variational data assimilation system to support the new observed variables. In a global cycling experiment, assimilation of ALADIN observations led to reductions in average root-mean-square error of 2.1% and 1.3% for the zonal and meridional wind analyses when compared against European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecast System (IFS) analyses. Even though the observable variable is wind, the assimilation of ALADIN observation had an overall positive impact on the analyses of other variables, such as temperature and specific humidity. As a result, the KIM 72-hour wind forecast fields were improved in the Southern Hemisphere poleward of 30 degrees.

  • A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was applied to the Lake Euiam. The lake has three inflows, of which Gongji Stream has the smallest flow rate and poorest water. The dam-storage volume, watershed area, lake shape and discharge type of the Chuncheon Dam and the Soyang Dam are different. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze the water plume and mixing pattern due to the difference of the two dams regarding the amount of outflow and water temperature. In this study, we analyzed the effects of different characteristics on temperature and conductivity using the model appropriate for the Lake Euiam. We selected an integrated system supporting 3-D time varying modeling (GEMSS) to represent large temporal and spatial variations in hydrodynamics and transport of the Lake Euiam. The model represents the water temperature and hydrodynamics in the lake reasonably well. We examined residence time and spreading patterns of the incoming flows in the lake based on the results of the validated model. The results of the water temperature and conductivity distribution indicated that characteristics of upstream dams greatly influence Lake Euiam. In this study, the three-dimensional time variable water quality model successfully simulated the temporal and spatial variations of the hydrodynamics in the Lake Euiam. The model may be used for efficient water quality management.

  • The lattice structure is attracting attention from industry because of its excellent strength and stiffness, ultra-lightweight, and energy absorption capability. Despite these advantages, widespread commercialization is limited by the difficult manufacturing processes for complex shapes. Additive manufacturing is attracting attention as an optimal technology for manufacturing lattice structures as a technology capable of fabricating complex geometric shapes. In this study, a unit cell was formed using a three-dimensional coordinate method. The relative density relational equation according to the boundary box size and strut radius of the unit cell was derived. Simple cubic (SC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and face-centered cubic (FCC) with a controlled relative density were designed using modeling software. The accuracy of the equations for calculating the relative density proposed in this study secured 98.3%, 98.6%, and 96.2% reliability in SC, BCC, and FCC, respectively. A simulation of the lattice structure revealed an increase in compressive yield load with increasing relative density under the same cell arrangement condition. The compressive yield load decreased in the order of SC, BCC, and FCC under the same arrangement conditions. Finally, structural optimization for the compressive load of a 20 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm structure was possible by configuring the SC unit cells in a 3 × 3 × 3 array.

  • A three-dimensional ecological model (EMT-3D) was applied to Tokyo Bay for the simulation of PFOA. EMT-3D was calibrated with seawater analysis data obtained from the study area in 2004. The simulated results of dissolved PFOA were in good agreement with the observed values, with a correlation coefficient(R) of 0.7115${\sim}$0.8759 and a coefficient of determination $(R^2)$ of 0.5062${\sim}$0.7672. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that partition rate, adsorption rate and settling rate were important factors for PFOA in particulate organic matter. In the case of PFOA in phytoplankton, bioconcentration factor, uptake rate and partition rate were important factors. Therefore, the parameters must be carefully considered in the modeling. In the case of 50% and 80% total loads reduction, concentration of dissolved PFOA was shown to be lower than 20ng/L and 10ng/L, respectively. In the case of reduction of loads from rivers in each prefecture, Tokyo prefecture was found to have the most influence on the change of dissolved PFOA in surface water while Chiba prefecture was found to have the most influnce on the change of dissolved PFOA in bottom water.

  • Recently, the liquefaction phenomenon was first discovered in Korea due to a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred in Pohang, Gyeonsangbuk-do. When liquefaction occurs, some of the water and sand are ejected to the ground, producing a space, which leads to various dangerous situations, such as ground subsidence, building collapse, and sinkhole generation. Recently, the necessity of producing a liquefaction risk map in Korea has increased to grasp potential liquefaction areas in advance. Therefore, this study examined the drilling information from the national geotechnical information DB center at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport to produce a liquefaction risk map, and developed a module to implement functions for basic data modeling and 3D analysis based on drilling information database extraction and information. Through this study, effective interlocking technology of the integrated database of national land information was obtained, and three-dimensional information was generated for each stage of liquefaction risk analysis, such as soil resistance value and a liquefaction risk map. In the future, the technology developed in this study can be used as a comprehensive decision support technology for establishing a foundation for building 3D liquefaction information and for establishing a response system of liquefaction.

  • Three-dimensional (3-D) semiconductor nanoarchitectures, including nano- and micro- rods, pyramids, and disks, are emerging as one of the most promising elements for future optoelectronic devices. Since these 3-D semiconductor nanoarchitectures have many interesting unconventional properties, including the use of large light-emitting surface area and semipolar/nonpolar nano- or micro-facets, numerous studies reported on novel device applications of these 3-D nanoarchitectures. In particular, 3-D nanoarchitecture devices can have noticeably different current spreading characteristics compared with conventional thin film devices, due to their elaborate 3-D geometry. Utilizing this feature in a highly controlled manner, color-tunable light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were demonstrated by controlling the spatial distribution of current density over the multifaceted GaN LEDs. Meanwhile, for the fabrication of high brightness, single color emitting LEDs or laser diodes, uniform and high density of electrical current must be injected into the entire active layers of the nanoarchitecture devices. Here, we report on a new device structure to inject uniform and high density of electrical current through the 3-D semiconductor nanoarchitecture LEDs using metal core inside microtube LEDs. In this work, we report the fabrications and characteristics of metal-cored coaxial $GaN/In_xGa_{1-x}N$ microtube LEDs. For the fabrication of metal-cored microtube LEDs, $GaN/In_xGa_{1-x}N/ZnO$ coaxial microtube LED arrays grown on an n-GaN/c-Al2O3 substrate were lifted-off from the substrate by wet chemical etching of sacrificial ZnO microtubes and $SiO_2$ layer. The chemically lifted-off layer of LEDs were then stamped upside down on another supporting substrates. Subsequently, Ti/Au and indium tin oxide were deposited on the inner shells of microtubes, forming n-type electrodes of the metal-cored LEDs. The device characteristics were investigated measuring electroluminescence and current-voltage characteristic curves and analyzed by computational modeling of current spreading characteristics.

  • Three-dimensional FEM numerical analysis was performed to understand the behaviors of blocks and piles according to the horizontal load for the block breakwater combined with piles. The Modified Mohr-Coulomb model, the improved version of the Mohr-Coulomb model, was applied for the ground modeling. The cases when the pile is embedded only into the block, embedded to the riprap layer (H = 4.29 cm), and embedded to the ground down to 2H, 3H, and 4H were examined. The results of the laboratory model experiment and the numerical analysis showed similar horizontal resistance force-displacement behaviors. The pile showed rotational behavior up to the embedment depth of 1H~2H and bending behavior in the case of 3H~4H depth embedment. When the embedment depth of the pile is 3H or more, the pile shows a bending behavior, so it can be considered that the pile contributes significantly to the horizontal resistance of the block breakwater. The results of this study will be used for various numerical analyses for real-size structure design.

  • This paper reports on the stray light analysis results of a compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) for a microsatellite STSAT-3. COMIS images Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distances of 27 m at the 18~62 spectral bands (0.4 ~ 1.05 ${\mu}m$) for the nadir looking at an altitude of 700 km. COMIS has an imaging telescope and an imaging spectrometer box into which three electronics PCBs are embedded. The telescope images a $27m{\times}28km$ area of Earth surface onto a slit of dimensions $11.8{\mu}m{\times}12.1mm$. This corresponds to a ground sampling distance of 27 m and a swath width of 28 km for nadir looking posture at an altitude of 700 km. Then the optics relays and disperses the slit image onto the detector thereby producing a monochrome image of the entrance slit formed on each row of detector elements. The spectrum of each point in the row is imaged along a detector column. The optical mounts and housing structures are designed in order to prevent stray light from arriving onto the image and so deteriorating the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The stray light analysis, performed by a non-sequential ray tracing software (LightTools) with three dimensional housing and lens modeling, confirms that the ghost and stray light arriving at the detector plane has the relative intensity of ${\sim}10^{-5}$ and furthermore it locates outside the concerned image size i.e. the field of view of the optics.

  • Objective: The 3-dimensional reconstruction method with resolution recovery modeling has advantages of high spatial resolution and contrast because of its precise modeling of spatial blurring according to the distance from detector plane. The aim of this study was to evaluate one of the resolution recovery reconstruction methods (Astonish, Philips Medical), compare it to other iterative reconstructions, and verify its clinical usefulness. Materials and Methods: NEMA IEC PET body phantom and Flanges Jaszczak ECT phantom (Data Spectrum Corp., USA) studies were performed using Skylight SPECT (Philips) system under four different conditions; short or long (2 times of short) radius, and half or full (40 kcts/frame) acquisition counts. Astonish reconstruction method was compared with two other iterative reconstructions; MLEM and 3D-OSEM which vendor supplied. For quantitative analysis, the contrast ratios obtained from IEC phantom test were compared. Reconstruction parameters were determined by optimization study using graph of contrast ratio versus background variability. The qualitative comparison was performed with Jaszczak ECT phantom and human myocardial data. Results: The overall contrast ratio was higher with Astonish than the others. For the largest hot sphere of 37 mm diameter, Astonish showed about 27.1% and 17.4% higher contrast ratio than MLEM and 3D-OSEM, in short radius study. For long radius, Astonish showed about 40.5% and 32.6% higher contrast ratio than MLEM and 3D-OSEM. The effect of acquired counts was insignificant. In the qualitative studies with Jaszczak phantom and human myocardial data, Astonish showed the best image quality. Conclusion: In this study, we have found out that Astonish can provide more reliable clinical results by better image quality compared to other iterative reconstruction methods. Although further clinical studies are required, Astonish would be used in clinics with confidence for enhancement of images.
