3-D Building Reconstruction from Standard IKONOS Stereo Products in Dense Urban Areas (IKONOS 컬러 입체영상을 이용한 대규모 도심지역의 3차원 건물복원)

  • This paper presented an effective strategy to extract the buildings and to reconstruct 3-D buildings using high-resolution multispectral stereo satellite images. Proposed scheme contained three major steps: building enhancement and segmentation using both BDT (Background Discriminant Transformation) and ISODATA algorithm, conjugate building identification using the object matching with Hausdorff distance and color indexing, and 3-D building reconstruction using photogrammetric techniques. IKONOS multispectral stereo images were used to evaluate the scheme. As a result, the BDT technique was verified as an effective tool for enhancing building areas since BDT suppressed the dominance of background to enhance the building as a non-background. In building recognition, color information itself was not enough to identify the conjugate building pairs since most buildings are composed of similar materials such as concrete. When both Hausdorff distance for edge information and color indexing for color information were combined, most segmented buildings in the stereo images were correctly identified. Finally, 3-D building models were successfully generated using the space intersection by the forward RFM (Rational Function Model).

  • This paper presents a new approach for modeling human limbs shape from 3D scan data. Based on the cylindrical structure of limbs, the overall shape is approximated with a set of ellipsoids through ellipsoid fitting and interpolation of fit-ellipsoids. Then, the smooth domain surface representing the coarse shape is generated as the envelope surface of ellipsoidal sweep, and the fine details are reconstructed by constructing parametric displacement function on the domain surface. For fast calculation, the envelope surface is approximated with ellipse sweep surface, and points on the reconstructed surface are mapped onto the corresponding ellipsoid. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for skeleton-driven body deformation.

Uncertainty Analysis of Observation Matrix for 3D Reconstruction (3차원 복원을 위한 관측행렬의 불확실성 분석)

  • Statistical optimization algorithms have been variously developed to estimate the 3D shape and motion. However, statistical approaches are limited to analyze the sensitive effects of SfM(Shape from Motion) according to the camera's geometrical position or viewing angles and so on. This paper propose the quantitative estimation method about the uncertainties of an observation matrix by using camera imaging configuration factors predict the reconstruction ambiguities in SfM. This is a very efficient method to predict the final reconstruction performance of SfM algorithm. Moreover, the important point is that our method show how to derive the active guidelines in order to set the camera imaging configurations which can be expected to lead the reasonable reconstruction results. The experimental results verify the quantitative estimates of an observation matrix by using camera imaging configurations and confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm.

A Study on the Kinematic Surveying Method Using the Digital Video Recorder (디지털 비디오 리코더에 의한 이동 측량 기법 연구)

  • This study recorded an object using a digital video recorder, and then tried to estimate 3-D positional information and to reconstruct an image. Firstly, the accuracy of measurement results from a video recorder was evaluated and tested for an applicability, then it applied to a real object to construct 3-D digital model. This study assumed that there is no lens distortion in a video recorder, and all bundles should precisely pass through the projection center of a lens. The image size for orientations is determined by the size of CCD chip and the number of pixels. The average squared error from the result by a digital video recorder and that by triangular survey from 1-second theodolite shows 0.0173m error in x,y coordinates. Without knowing the accurate information on the lens distortion and the coordinates of the projection center, this study reasonably produces acceptable results in the reconstruction of 3-D model. In consequence, this study found that the image from a digital video camera can be reconstructed 3-D model only from the information on a camera type.

3D Model Reconstruction Algorithm Using a Focus Measure Based on Higher Order Statistics (고차 통계 초점 척도를 이용한 3D 모델 복원 알고리즘)

  • This paper presents a SFF(shape from focus) algorithm using a new focus measure based on higher order statistics for the exact depth estimation. Since conventional SFF-based 3D depth reconstruction algorithms used SML(sum of modified Laplacian) as the focus measure, their performance is strongly depended on the image characteristics. These are efficient only for the rich texture and well focused images. Therefore, this paper adopts a new focus measure using HOS(higher order statistics), in order to extract the focus value for relatively poor texture and focused images. The initial best focus area map is generated by the measure. Thereafter, the area refinement, thinning, and corner detection methods are successively applied for the extraction of the locally best focus points. Finally, a 3D model from the carefully selected points is reconstructed by Delaunay triangulation.

Analysis of paper map images for acquiring 3D terrain data (3차원 지형 자료 획득을 위한 지도 영상 분석)

  • One of the major problems in GIS(Geographical Information Systems) involves acquiring 3-D terrain data. Because conventional methods such as land surveying or analysis of aerial photographs are costly, the method of using existing paper maps has been gaining considerable attention. This method demands three processing steps: 1) extraction of contours, 2) assignment of height values to the extracted contours, 3) reconstruction of 3-D terrain data. In this paper we systematically develop a procedure for acquiring 3-D terrain data from contour solutions. For the first two steps, we describe the necessary operations and roughly sketch solutions. For the last step, we propose an efficient raster-based algorithm and present the results of experiments with existing paper map images.

Image-Based Approach for Modeling 3D Shapes with Curved Surfaces (곡면을 포함하는 형상의 영상을 이용한 모델링)

  • In this paper, we propose an image-based method for modeling 3D objects with curved surfaces based on the NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) representation. Starting from a few calibrated images, the user specifies the corresponding curves by means of an interactive user interface. Then, the 3D curves are reconstructed using stereo reconstruction. In order to fit the curves easily using the interactive user interface, NURBS curves and surfaces are employed. The proposed surface modeling techniques include surface building methods such as bilinear surfaces, ruled surfaces, generalized cylinders, and surfaces of revolution. In addition to these methods, we also propose various advanced surface modeling techniques, including skinned surfaces, swept surfaces, and boundary patches. Based on these surface modeling techniques, it is possible to build various types of 3D shape models with textured curved surfaces without much effort. Also, it is possible to reconstruct more realistic surfaces by using proposed view-dependent texture acquisition algorithm. Constructed 3D shape model with curves and curved surfaces can be exported in VRML format, making it possible to be used in different 3D graphics softwares.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the excellence and originality of the Joseon artillery(Jungwan-gu) through an effective restoration. Jungwan-gu that was used during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 was able to maintain its maritime dominance based on cutting-edge technology of its time. Joeson artillery(Jungwan-gu) was used in major naval/land battles during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and is an important cultural heritage that provides a glimpse into Joeson people's will to defend the nation from foreign invasion. For further historical verification such as operational method of Jungwan-gu, extensive research in various fields including size, proportions, structure, materials, and casting method were required. Accordingly, for a more effective research on Jungwan-gu, cutting-edge technologies such as 3D scanning and 3D printing were utilized. Firstly, 3D scanning, modeling, and printing technology were applied to identify the morphological characteristics of Jungwan-gu. Through this, we were able to reach our research objective of identifying the size, internal structure, and proportionality of Jungwan-gu. In addition, by studying the form, operation, casting methods, and other characteristics, the restoration of Jungwan-gu provided us with an important opportunity to verify the dominance and originality of the Joeson era's science and technology during the Japanese Invasion of 1592. This reaserch subject participated in the "4th 3D printing BIZCON Contest" and won the Minister Prize of Science and Technology Information and Communication.

A Study on the 3D Shape Reconstruction Algorithm of an Indoor Environment Using Active Stereo Vision (능동 스테레오 비젼을 이용한 실내환경의 3차원 형상 재구성 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose the 3D shape reconstruction method that combine the mosaic method and the active stereo matching using the laser beam. The active stereo matching method detects the position information of the irradiated laser beam on object by analyzing the color and brightness variation of left and right image, and acquires the depth information in epipolar line. The mosaic method extracts feature point of image by using harris comer detection and matches the same keypoint between the sequence of images using the keypoint descriptor index method and infers correlation between the sequence of images. The depth information of the sequence image was calculated by the active stereo matching and the mosaic method. The merged depth information was reconstructed to the 3D shape information by wrapping and blending with image color and texture. The proposed reconstruction method could acquire strong the 3D distance information, and overcome constraint of place and distance etc, by using laser slit beam and stereo camera.

A Study on the Restoration of Chimi Excavated the Wangheungsa Temple Site using 3D Scanning and Computer Numerical Control (3차원 스캐닝과 컴퓨터 수치 제어 기술을 이용한 왕흥사지 출토 치미의 복원 연구)

  • The chimi(ridge-end tile) of Wangheungsa temple is the oldest in our country. The upper part of the chimi was excavated from the southern side of Wangheungsa temple and the lower part from the northern side. These parts are considered to be portions of the same chimi, because they are similar in shape and are excavated from two sides of the same temple structure. However, the original shape of the chimi cannot be determined owing to substantial deterioration. Hence, in this study, replicas of the deteriorated chimi portions of Wangheungsa temple were fabricated by employing 3D scanning technology and the computer numerical control machining method. While observing the bending phenomenon of the chimi, the proposed model was warped realistically on the basis of the bending direction of the actual chimi. Consequently, the restoration process was modified several times. The results indicated that no gaps can be found between the upper and lower parts, and the corresponding patterns connect naturally. Furthermore, the proposed method is contactless, safe, operable, reproducible, and appropriate for restoration of artifacts. Additionally, the modeling data is semi-permanent. Hence, if modelling data is appropriately applied as per the characteristics of artifacts, it can be utilized in various fields such as virtual exhibitions, hands-on exhibitions, cultural heritage restoration, and production of teaching aids and souvenirs.
