  • A nano-stereolithography (NSL) process has been developed for fabrication of 3D shell structures which can be applied to various nano/micro-fluidic devices. By the process, a complicated 3D shell structure on a scale of several microns can be fabricated using lamination of layers with a resolution of 150 nm in size, so it does not require the use of my sacrificial layer or any supporting structure. A layer was fabricated by means of solidifying liquid-state monomers using two-photon absorption (TPA) induced using a femtosecond laser processing. When the polymerization process is finished, unsolidified liquid state resins can be removed easily by dropping several droplets of ethanol fur developing the fabricated structure. Through this work, some 3D shell structures, which can be applied to various applications such as nano/micro-fluidic devices and MEMS system, were fabricated using the developed process.

  • Up to now the incomplete texture have been manufactured through the 2D surface treatment like simple painting process or printing process. But in order to obtain 3D texture like natural object, micro scales' 3D surface structure on the surface of plastic part must be formed. In this study plastic smart phone case with 3D texture was produced by developing the surface duplication technology of natural object used electro-forming technology, by developing the press forming technology converted plane stamper to curved surface stamper and by developing the injection mold and molding technology which have been installed the curved surface stamper.

  • This study was intended to provide efficient algorithms for high quality postprocessing on the basis of microcomputers with limited capacity and functionality. Improved methods of postprocessing including stress contouring, internal force diagraming, and displacement animation, were proposed and implemented into a new finite element system. Visualization of three-dimensional structural behaviors was treated with special emphasis.

  • Micro-stereolithography is a newly proposed technology as a means that can fabricate a 3D micro-structure of free form. It makes a 3D micro-structure by dividing the shape into many slices of relevant thickness along horizontal surfaces, hardening each layer of slice with a focused laser beam, and stacking them up to a desired shape. In this technology, differently from the conventional stereolithography, scale effect is dominant. To realize micro-stereolithography technology, we developed the micro-stereolithography apparatus which is composed of an Ar+ laser, x-y-z stages. controllers. optical devices and scan path generation software. Related processes were developed, too. Using the system, a number of micro-structures were successfully fabricated. Some of these samples are shown for prove this system. Laser scan path generation algorithm and software considering photopolymer solidification phenomena as well as given 3D model were developed. Sample fabrication of developed software shows relatively high dimensional accuracy compared to the uncompensated result.

  • This paper describes an optimal design system for multi-disciplinary structural design. An automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry technique, is incorporated into the system, together with a commercial FE analysis code and a commercial solid modelers. An optimum design solution or satisfactory solutions are then automatically searched using the genetic algorithms modified for real search space, together with the automated FE analysis system. With an aid of genetic algorithms, the present design system allows us to effectively obtain a multi-dimensional solutions. The developed system is successfully applied to the shape design of a micro accelerometer based on a tunnel current concept.

  • MEMS and LIGA technologies have been used for fabricating microstructures, but their shape is not 3D because of difficulty for preparation of many masks. To fabricate 3D microstructures, microstereolithography technology based on Digital Micromirror Device($DMD^{TM}$) was introduced. It has no need of masks and is capable of fabricating high aspect ratio microstructures. In this technology, STL file is the standard format as the same of conventional rapid prototyping system, and 3D parts are fabricated by layer-by-layer according to 2D section sliced from STL file. The UV light source is illuminated to DMD which makes bitmap images of 2D section, and they are transferred and focused on resin surface. In this paper, we addressed optical design of microstereolithography system in consideration of light path according to DMD operation and image-forming on the resin surface using optical design program. To verify the performance of implemented microstereolithography system, 3D microstructures with complexity and high aspect ratio were fabricated.

  • In order to increase the productivity of conventional microstereolithography (MSL), digital micromirror device($DMD^{TM}$) based MSL is proposed and the feasibility of 3D rnicrocomponents fabrication is demonstrated in two ways; free surface and constrained surface techniques. The clearness of optical images at the exposure plane was confirmed for the fabrication of an accurate 3D structure by controlling the dynamic viscosity of FA1260T and the shape accuracy of a structure fabricated with epoxy-based resin ($Somos^{\circledR}$ 10120) was analyzed to determine the optimum curing conditions. After finding the appropriate process variables, the feasibility of multiple microstructures is then demonstrated. Due to the high productivity, MSL using $DMD^{TM}$ showed the potential to replace the existing focused laser beam MSL.
