  • Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.

  • This paper presents a fast modeling technique of virtual pottery using force feedback based on a circular sector element method. Previous techniques for simulating deformable objects such as finite element method (FEM) are limited in real-time haptic rendering due to their complexity and expensive computational cost. In our model, circular sector elements which fully represent features of pottery's shape are closely gathered and piled together. This allows efficient deformable object modeling through a decrease in the number of elements and reducing computational cost.

  • The two-dimensional elastoplastic analysis was peformed to reveal a detail residual stress distribution of ceramic/metal joint specimen using finite element method and X-ray method. The highest tensile residual stress, ${\sigma}_x$ perpendicular to the interface appeared at the edge of the ceramic near the interface. In the vicinity of the interface, the high stress concentration occurs and residual stress distributes three-dimensionally. Therefore, the measured stress distribution differed remarkably from the result of the two-dimensional finite-element analysis. Especially at the center of the specimen near the interface, the residual stress, ox obtained from the finite element analysis was compressive, whereas X-ray measurement yielded tensile ${\sigma}_x$. Therefore, it is also attempted to investigate the finite element model for the prediction of residual stress ${\sigma}_x$ distributed nearly the interface of joint.

  • In this study we proposed a simplified finite element model of anchor bolt system inserted through concrete structures considering clamping forces. The three different finite element types using LS-DYNA are applied for numerical efficiency of the anchor bolt modeling. Combined beam and solid elements are used to reflect the tension state at internal part of anchor bolt due to torques. The clamping forces due to torques are considered by introducing a compression for a nut plane modeled by beam elements. The numerical examples show good agreement with different element types. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of different element types on the induced axial and shear forces of anchor bolts considering clamping forces.

  • In this paper, an efficient computational algorithm for the implementation of the newly proposed node activation technique is presented, and its computational aspects are thoroughly investigated. To verify the validity, convergence, and efficiency of the node activation technique, various numerical examples are worked out including the problems of Poisson equation, 2D elasticity problems, and 3D elasticity problems. From the numerical tests, it is verified that one can arbitrarily activate and handle the nodal points of interest in finite element model with very little loss of the numerical accuracy.

  • A finite element based approach that can be used to investigate the plane-view shape and crop loss of a material during plate rolling is presented. We employed a three-dimensional finite element model to continuously simulate the shape change of the head and tail of a plate as the number of rolling passes increases. The main feature of the proposed model lies in the fact that the multistage rolling can be simulated without a break because the rolling direction of the material is reversibly controlled as the roll gap sequentially decreases. The material constants required in the finite element analysis were experimentally obtained by hot tensile tests. We also performed a pilot hot plate rolling test to verify the usefulness of the proposed finite element model. Results reveal that the computed plane-view shapes as well as crop losses by the proposed finite element model were in good agreement with the measured ones. The crop losses predicted by the proposed model were within 5% of those measured from the pilot hot plate rolling test.

  • We develop the weighted-averaging finite-element method which uses four kinds of element sets. By constructing global stiffness and mass matrices for four kinds of element sets and then averaging them with weighting coefficients, we obtain a new global stiffness and mass matrix. With the optimal weighting coefficients minimizing grid dispersion and grid anisotropy, we can reduce the number of grid points required per wavelength to 4 for a $1\%$ upper limit of error. We confirm the accuracy of our weighted-averaging finite-element method through accuracy analyses for a homogeneous and a horizontal-layer model. By synthetic data example, we reconfirm that our method is more efficient for simulating a geological model than previous finite-element methods.

  • In this study, computational structural dynamic analyses of a gyrocopter have been conducted considering unsteady dynamic hub-loads due to rotating blades. 3D CATIA models with detailed mechanical parts we constructed and virtually assembled into the complete aircraft configuration. The dynamic loading generated by rotating blades in the forward flight condition are calculated by a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code such as FLUENT. Modal based transient and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of the gyrocopter. Free vibration analysis results for different fuel and pilot conditions, frequency responses and transient responses for critical flight conditions are also presented in detail.
