  • The construction of an underground silo structure was the first stage of erecting the Gyeongju low-and-intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility. The facility, completed in 2014, has a scale of 100 000 drums and is currently in operation. The underground silo structure, 25 and 50 m in diameter and height, respectively, consists of cylindrical (for storing waste packages) and dome parts. The dome is divided into lower (connected to the operation tunnel) and upper parts. The wall of the underground silo structure is an approximately 1-m-thick reinforced concrete liner. In this study, finite element analysis was performed for each phase of the construction sequence and operation of the underground silo structure. Two-dimensional axial symmetric finite element analysis was implemented using the SMAP-3D program. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was also performed to examine the reliability of the two-dimensional axial symmetric finite element model. The structural behavior of the underground silo structure was predicted, and its structural safety was examined.

  • In this paper, we validate simulation results for the design optimization of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) intended for use in Medium Voltage Direct Current systems (MVDC). With the increasing integration of renewable energy and grid connections, researchers are focusing on medium-voltage systems for balancing energy in new and renewable energy networks, rather than traditional transmission or distribution networks. Specifically, for DC distribution networks dealing with fault currents that must be rapidly blocked, current-limiting systems like superconducting current limiters offer distinct advantages over the operation of DC circuit breakers. The development of such superconducting current limiters requires finite element analysis (FEM) and an extensive design process before prototype production and evaluation. To expedite this design process, the design outcomes are assimilated using a Reduced Order Model (ROM). This approach enables the verification of results akin to finite element analysis, facilitating the optimization of design simulations for production and mass production within existing engineering frameworks.

  • A resistivity method has been applied to wide range of engineering and environmental problems with the help of automatic and precise data acquisition. Thus, more accurate modeling and inversion of time-lapse monitoring data are required since resistivity monitoring has been introduced to quantitatively find out subsurface changes With respect to time. Here, we used the finite element method (FEM) for 3D resistivity modeling since the method is easy to realize complex topography and arbitrary shaped anomalous bodies. In the FEM, the linear elements, also referred to as first order elements, have certain advantages of simple formulation and narrow bandwidth of system equation. However, the linear elements show the poor accuracy and slow convergence of the solution with respect to the number of elements or nodes. To achieve the higher accuracy of finite element solution, high order elements are generally used. In this study, we developed a 3D resistivity modeling program using high order Serendipity elements. Comparing the Serendipity element solutions for a cube model with the linear element solutions, we assured that the Serendipity element solutions are more accurate than the linear element solutions in the 3D resistivity modeling.

  • The development of joint FE models for deep learning neural network (DLNN)-based hybrid FEA is presented. Material models of bolts and bearings in the front axle of tractor, showing complex behavior induced by various tightening conditions, were replaced with DLNN models. Bolts are modeled as one-dimensional Timoshenko beam elements with six degrees of freedom, and bearings as three-dimensional solid elements. Stress-strain data were extracted from all elements after finite element analysis subjected to various load conditions, and DLNN for bolts and bearing were trained with Tensorflow. The DLNN-based joint models were implemented in the ABAQUS user subroutines where stresses from the next increment are updated and the algorithmic tangent stiffness matrix is calculated. Generalization of the trained DLNN in the FE model was verified by subjecting it to a new loading condition. Finally, the DLNN-based FEA for the front axle of the tractor was conducted and the feasibility was verified by comparing with results of a static structural experiment of the actual tractor.

  • Many mathematical techniques have been developed to determine the muscle forces and force distribution in biomechanical human model, because it is so important to understand internal forces resisting external loading. However, a three-dimensional mathematical model of wrist joint, which is essential to develop solid modeling and artificial wrist joint, has not been well developed. This study proposed to define three-dimensional mathematical model of distal radius and ulna of the human wrist and to develop a detailed two-dimensional finite element through comparisons to existing analytical models and experimental tests. This mathematical model were accurately recreated, allowing the internal tendon force as well as force transmission and distribution through the distal radios and ulna during dynamic loadings. The results found in this study indicate and support the findings of other investigator that cyclic loading condition results in higher compression force on distal radius and ulna and may be source of wrist disorder.

  • In this paper, nonlinear analysis for reinforced concrete structure for power transmission line is performed by considering the characteristics of the failure, which are depend on loading conditions and concrete material models. On the numerical evaluation for the failure behavior, the finite element analysis is applied. For the concrete material model, microplane model based on concrete damage is introduced. However, to describe the crack bridging effect of long and short fiber of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), tensile softening model is suggested and applied for SFRC. An numerical results by finite element technique are compared with the experiment results for box culvert specimen. Comparing on the experimental and analytical results, validity and reliability of numerical analysis are investigated.

  • In this paper, the thermal insulator structure of a real rocket which is fabricated in a way that laminated composite rings are connected in series is analyzed using 3-dimensional axisymmetric finite element models. Simulation of cowl zone using a real operating conditions provides that the stress distribution in the laminated composite ring is largely influenced by ply-angles, axial dimensions, and boundary conditions. Notably the plylift that is the precursor to the wedge-out occurs in the ring-to-ring bonding region. It is hypothesized that after the plylift the wedge is dropped out due to the shear stresses in the ply-angle direction and axial compressive stresses.
