  • In SCRamjet engine, combustion occurs in supersonic flow with airbreathing. SCRamjet is characterized by very short combustion time in combustor, so it is very important to be mixing the air and fuel in short duration. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for enhancement of mixing. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. CFD-Fastran, commercial code with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with the Menter SST turbulence model were used. The results are obtained validate experiment results for same condition. Therefore, the numerical results show the mixing enhancement characteristics with a cavity.

  • A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation analysis code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. For closing the problem of thermo-structural analysis, Arrhenius' equation and Zvyagin's ablation model are used. The moving boundary problem are solved by remeshing-rezoning method. For simulation of complicated thermal protection systems, this method is integrated with a three-dimensional finite-element thermal and structure analysis code.

  • The criticality analysis method using HELIOS-MASTER code system, which is the nuclear core analysis code system, was developed for the spent fuel storage of SMART-P reactor. We generated the macroscopic cross section of the geometric model with HELIOS and estimated the criticality of the 3-dimensional model with MASTER for SMART-P spent fuel storage. The validity of criticality analysis method for SMART-P spent fuel storage with the HELIOS-MASTER code system by 3-D MCNP calculation was also verified. The result of the criticality analysis with the HELIOS-MASTER code system is more conservative than that with the MCNP and the accuracy of this result is within the range of an allowable error. Because HELIOS-MASTER can perform the 3-D depletion calculation lot a spent fuel storage, it will be useful to perform the criticality analysis including a burnup credit in future.

  • The gas motion inside the engine cylinder plays a very important role in determining the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine. A precise information of in-cylinder three dimensional complex gas motion is crucial in optimizing engine design. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is a combustion concept, which is a hybrid between Otto and Diesel engine. The turbulent diffusion leads to increased rates of momentum, heat and mass transfer. The in-cylinder turbulence flow was found to affect the present HCCI combustion mainly through its influence on the wall heat transfer. This study investigates the effect of piston geometry shape on the turbulent flow characteristics of in-cylinder from the numerical analysis using the LES model and the results obtained can offer guidelines of the combustion geometries for better combustion process and engine performance.

  • A three dimensional numerical analysis has been conducted to analyze the effects of a pipe angle, connecting a combustion chamber and a pintle nozzle, and pintle position on pintle nozzle performance. The compressibility correction of $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulent model was implemented to precisely predict the characteristics of complex flow structures inside a supersonic pintle nozzle. Due to an 3-D asymmetric pintle nozzle configuration, complex helical flow streamlines and large flow separations were observed, which resulting in significant nozzle performance losses. As the angle of connection-tube decreases, the coefficient of performance increases and Since the flow structures are evidently changed to the pintle stroke position, the performance characteristics was analyzed.

  • In order to effectively predict thermo-acoustic instability within real combustors of rocket engines and gas turbines, in the present study, the Helmholtz equation in conjunction with the time lag hypothesis is discretized by the finite element method on three-dimensional hybrid unstructured mesh. Numerical nonlinearity caused by the combustion response term is linearized by an iterative method, and the large-scale eigenvalue problem is solved by the Arnoldi method available in the ARPACK. As a consequence, the final solution of complex valued eigenfrequency and acoustic pressure field can be interpreted as resonant frequency, growth rate, and modal shape for acoustic modes of interest. The predictive capabilities of the present method have been validated against two academic problems with complex impedance boundary and premixed flame, as well as an ambient acoustic test for liquid rocket combustion chamber with/without baffle.

  • Three-dimensional unsteady reacting flowfield generated by transverse hydrogen injection into a supersonic mainstream are numerically investigated using DES and finite-rate chemistry model. Comparisons are made with experimental results to investigate the turbulent reacting flow physics. The numerical OH distribution describes well the experimental OH-PLIF result, while the numerical ignition delay time shows some disparity due to the restricted available experimental data.

  • Three dimensional numerical calculations were carried out for two different combustion chambers with the offset valve in order to investigate the swirl and the squish effects on the flow fields. The modified K-.epsilon. turbulence model considering the change of the density under the condition of the rapid compression and expansion of the pistion was used. During the compression process, it was found that the squish flow which controls the subsequent combustion process was produced due to the piston bowl in the bowl piston type combustion chambers but not for the flat piston type. The swirl velocity close to the solid body rotation was maintained in the flat piston type combustion chambers, but for the bowl piston type a resulting from the change of the solid body rotation was generated in the radial-circumferential plane. For the swirl ratio effect, as the swirl ratio increases, it was found that a large and strong vortex was generated in the radial-circumferential plane of bowl piston type combustion chambers because of the strong inward flows from the combustion chamber wall. These computational results were compared with the results of LDA measurement.

  • A new film cooling method to protect the pylon injector from aerodynamic heating for a scramjet combustor is proposed and verified with numerical methods. The conditions for the Mach 8 flight at an altitude of 35km are considered. Air is considered as a coolant. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model are used. A downward injection of coolant from the top of the pylon gives higher cooling effects with less mass flow rate of coolant than the upward coolant injection from bottom of the pylon. Also, the downward injection shows little flow separation due to the favorable pressure gradient and does not disturb the flowfields near pylon injector, which results in reduction of pressure losses.

  • Thermal effect of finite-rate chemistry on linear combustion stability and film cooling effect are investigated in sample rocket engine. The flow variables required to evaluate stability limits are obtained from CFD data with finite-rate chemistry adopted in three dimensional chamber. Major flow variables are affected appreciably by finite-rate chemistry and thereby, the calculated stability limits are modified. It is found that finite-rate chemistry contributes to stability enhancement in thermal point of view. And film cooling also has the effect of combustion stabilization.
