Target-to-Clutter Ratio Enhancement of Images in Through-the-Wall Radar Using a Radiation Pattern-Based Delayed-Sum Algorithm

  • In this paper, we compare the quality of images reconstructed by a conventional delayed-sum (DS) algorithm and radiation pattern-based DS algorithm. In order to evaluate the quality of images, we apply the target-to-clutter ratio (TCR), which is commonly used in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image assessment. The radiation pattern-based DS algorithm enhances the TCR of the image by focusing the target signals and preventing contamination of the radar scene. We first consider synthetic data obtained through GprMax2D/3D, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) forward solver. Experimental data of a 2-GHz bandwidth stepped-frequency signal are collected using a vector network analyzer (VNA) in an anechoic chamber setup. The radiation pattern-based DS algorithm shows a 6.7-dB higher TCR compared to the conventional DS algorithm.

  • Recent SAR systems provide fully polarimetric SAR data, which is known to be useful in a variety of applications such as disaster monitoring, target recognition, and land cover classification. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of polarization SAR data for landslide detection. The detectability of different SAR parameters was investigated based on the supervised classification approach. The classifier used in this study is the Adaptive Boosting algorithms. A fully polarimetric L-band PALSAR-2 data was used to examine landslides caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Kyushu, Japan. Experimental results show that fully polarimetric features from the target decomposition technique can provide improved detectability of landslide site with significant reduction of false alarms as compared with the single polarimetric observables.

An Analysis of 2D Positional Accuracy of Human Bodies Detection Using the Movement of Mono-UWB Radar

  • This paper considers the ability of counting and positioning multi-targets by using a mobile UWB radar device. After a background subtraction process, distinguishing between clutters and human body signals, the position of targets will be computed using weighted Gaussian mixture methods. While computer vision offers many advantages, it has limited performance in poor visibility conditions (e.g., at night, haze, fog or smoke). UWB radar can provide a complementary technology for detecting and tracking humans, particularly in poor visibility or through-wall conditions. As we know, for 2D measurement, one method is the use of at least two receiver antennas. Another method is the use of one mobile radar receiver. This paper tried to investigate the position detection of the stationary human body using the movement of one UWB radar module.

  • Radar target identification can be achieved by using various radar signatures, such as one-dimensional(1-D) range profile, 2-D radar images, and 1-D or 2-D scattering centers on a target. In this letter, five 1-D scattering center extraction methods are discussed - TLS(Total Least Square)-Prony, Fast Root-MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification), Matrix-Pencil, GEESE(GEneralized Eigenvalues utilizing Signal-subspace Eigenvalues), TLS-ESPRIT(Total Least Squares - Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique), These methods are compared in the context of estimation accuracy as well as a computational efficiency using a noisy data. Finally these methods are applied to the target classification experiment with the measured data in the POSTECH compact range facility.

펄스 내 변조 저피탐 레이더 신호 자동 식별 (Automatic Intrapulse Modulated LPI Radar Waveform Identification)

  • In electronic warfare(EW), low probability of intercept(LPI) radar signal is a survival technique. Accordingly, identification techniques of the LPI radar waveform have became significant recently. In this paper, classification and extracting parameters techniques for 7 intrapulse modulated radar signals are introduced. We propose a technique of classifying intrapulse modulated radar signals using Convolutional Neural Network(CNN). The time-frequency image(TFI) obtained from Choi-William Distribution(CWD) is used as the input of CNN without extracting the extra feature of each intrapulse modulated radar signals. In addition a method to extract the intrapulse radar modulation parameters using binary image processing is introduced. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed intrapulse radar waveform identification system. Simulation results show that the classification system achieves a overall correct classification success rate of 90 % or better at SNR = -6 dB and the parameter extraction system has an overall error of less than 10 % at SNR of less than -4 dB.

표적모의장치를 이용한 SAR 장비의 성능 분석 (Performance Analysis of SAR System Using Radar Target Simulation Equipment)

  • 본 논문에서는 합성개구레이다(Synthetic Aperture Radar: SAR) 장비의 성능 분석을 위하여 레이다 표적모의장치를 설계, 제작한 결과를 선보인다. 먼저 표적모의장치의 기능과 성능에 대해 설명하고, SAR 장비와 연동하기 위한 표적 시나리오 생성방법에 대해 설명하였다. 또한 제작된 표적모의장치를 이용하여 SAR 장비의 시간지연 값을 간단하고 정확하게 측정하고 보상하는 방법을 개발하였다. 시간지연이 보상된 SAR 장비와 표적모의장치를 이용하여 SAR 영상에서 점표적을 획득하고, IRF(Impulse Response Function) 분석을 통해 성능을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 방위방향 IRF의 PSLR(Peak to Side Lobe Ratio)은 -13.25 dB, 해상도는 0.49 m로 이론값과 매우 유사한 값을 보였다.

기저선이 최적화된 간섭계 레이다 고도계용 도파관 슬롯 배열 안테나 설계 (Design of Optimized Two Baseline Waveguide Slot Array Antenna for Interferometric Radar Altimeter)

  • In this paper, the compact waveguide slot array antenna for interferometric radar altimeter is proposed. The proposed antenna structure consist of corrugation structure which is applied between each channel to improve isolation, three-channel waveguide slot array antenna and feeder. In addition, to reduce the occurrence of phase ambiguity, the baseline spacing of the three-channel antenna is analyzed and the results are applied to the design. For compact design, reduced height and SMP connector structure are used and the dip brazing method which is the conjugation method after dipping to flux is used for the fabrication of the lightweight antenna. The measurement result of the proposed antenna shows less than 1.41 : 1 (VSWR) and 48.3 dBc (isolation). The antenna gain is higher than 20.2 dBi and the side lobe levels are lower than 18.8 dB (vertical plane) and 10.0 dB (horizontal plane).

레이다 신호의 클래스 분리도 측정을 위한 연구 (Study on Class Separability Measure for Radar Signals)

  • 본 논문에서는 레이다 신호를 위한 새로운 클래스간 분리도 측정 방법을 제시한다. 제안된 방법에서는 표적과 레이다 간의 상대적 각도 차이의 따른 레이다 신호의 민감도를 감소시키기 위해 RCS(radar cross section)의 경우 두 신호의 상관계수(correlation coefficient)를 구하고, 1차원 신호의 경우(i.e., high resolution range profile(HRRP)) 선형이동을 하며 상관계수를 구한다. 2차원 레이다 신호(i.e., inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR))의 경우 두 레이다 신호를 회전하면서 상관계수를 계산한다. 그런 다음, 두 레이다 신호가 가장 잘 배열되었을 경우의 최대 상관계수를 구하고, 이를 이용해 새로운 형태의 상관 기반 분리 행렬을 구성한다. 상관 기반 분리 행렬의 누적분포함수를 구하여 상위 확률에 응답하는 값을 구하였고, 그 값은 레이다 신호의 분리 능력을 정확하게 나타낸다. 제안한 방법을 이용한 실험 결과, 표적 분리 능력을 정확하게 추정할 수 있었다.

최소 에러를 갖는 레이다 수신기용 동기 검파 회로의 구현 (Implementation of a coherent detector with minimum errors for radar receiver)

  • In this study, when the coherent detector has been developed and manufactured in the receiver of radar system, we have suggested and realized the 'Frequecny-Feedback correction (FFC)' that extracts its errors affecting the performance of radar, such as amplitude imbalances (k), phase imbalance ($\varphi$) between channels and offset votlages and corrects them to improve radar performances. Applying the FFC proposed, we analyzed sthe properties of the coherent detector and compared its perfomances after and before correction procdure. After the correction sequence, the amplitude imbalance was improved upt o 2dB and the phase imbalance over 9$^{\circ}$. The image rejection ratio (IRR), one of the figures of merit of radar system, was made better above 9 dB after correcting the coherent detector which possessed 23 dB before.
