Association of the -2518 A/G Polymorphism of MCP-1 with Breast Cancer in Punjab, North-West India

  • Background: Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is a major chemokine thought to be responsible for monocyte and T-lymphocyte recruitment in acute inflammatory conditions and recruitment of macrophages in tumors. It is also implicated in cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between MCP-1 -2518 A/G polymorphism and breast cancer risk in patients from Amritsar city of Punjab state in North-West India. Materials and Methods: We screened DNA samples of 200 sporadic breast cancer patients and 200 age and gender matched unrelated healthy individuals for MCP-1 -2518 A/G polymorphism using the PCR-RFLP method. Results: A significantly increased frequency of the GG genotype was observed in patients as compared to controls. Individuals carrying the MCP1 -2518GG genotype had a two fold risk for breast cancer (OR=2.06, 95%CI, 1.06-3.98; p=0.03). Genetic models analysis revealed a significant association between MCP-1 -2518 A/G polymorphism and cancer risk in homozygous co-dominant (OR=2.06, 95%CI, 1.06-3.98; p=0.03) and recessive (OR=1.97, 95%CI, 1.05-3.70; p=0.03) models. Conclusions: We conclude that the GG genotype of the MCP-1-2518 A/G polymorphism is associated with increased risk to breast cancer in Punjab, North-West India.

영상통신에서 잡음 제거를 위한 새로운 세미 랜덤 인터리버 알고리즘 (A New Semi-Random Imterleaver Algorithm for the Noise Removal in Image Communication)

  • 본 논문에서는 영상 통신 채널 상에서 발생하는 잡음을 효과적으로 제거하기 위해 터보코드를 사용하였다. 터보코드는 복호 성능이 우수하지만 시스템의 복잡도와 복호 과정의 시간지연 때문에 실시간 통신에는 부적합하다는 단점이 있다. 이 문제를 극복하기 위해, 본 논문에서는 터보코드의 부·복호기에 사용되는 인터리버의 크기를 감소시켜 영상 데이터를 전송 할 때 소요되는 시간지연을 줄이는 새로운 세미 랜덤(Semi-Random)인터리버 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 세미 랜덤 인터리버 알고리즘은 입력 프레임의 길이를 1/2 크기만큼 인터리버를 구성하고, 인터리버 내에 데이터를 입력할 때는 블록 인터리버 처럼 행으로 입력하며, 데이터를 읽을 때는 랜덤하게 읽음과 동시에 다음 데이터가 그 주소 번지에 위치하게 된다. 그러므로, 기존의 블록, 대각, 랜덤 인터리버와 알고리즘의 복잡도를 비교할 시 그 복잡도가 1/2로 감소되어 세미 랜덤 인터리버를 터보코드에 적용할 때 영상 데이터를 실시간 처리할 수 있다.

Versatility of Modified Nasolabial Flap in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

  • Background: To evaluate the versatility and reach of modified nasolabial flap used in reconstruction of defects created in and around the oral cavity. Methods: A total number of 20 cases were selected. Out of which 13 were males and 7 females. The age of these patients ranged from 24-63 years. 29 modified nasolabial flaps were raised in twenty patients. Based on clinical and histopathological examination, out of 20 patients, 14 patients were diagnosed with oral submucous fibrosis, 3 with verrucous carcinoma, 1 with squamous papilloma, 1 with oro-antral fistula and 1 with traumatic loss of lower lip. Results: Minimum preoperative interincisal distance (IID) was 0 mm and maximum was 15 mm with mean of $6.00{\pm}4.76mm$ in patients with oral submucous fibrosis and 12 months postoperatively minimum IID was 16 mm and maximum was 41 mm with mean of $28.00{\pm}8.96mm$. In one case, dehiscence (3.4%) was noted on the anterior tip for which tip revision was done. Bulky appearance of the flap intraorally was observed in 2 cases (6.9%). Five (17.2%) among the 29 flaps had visible scar at the donor site postoperatively up to 3 months. Conclusion: Numerous reconstructive techniques have been employed in the reconstruction of small to intermediate sized defects of oral cavity. Modified nasolabial flap is a versatile flap which has robust vascularity and can be successfully used with minimal complications. It can be rotated intraorally to extend from the soft palate to the lip. Thus, it can be used efficiently to treat the small defects of the oral cavity as well as recreating lost lip structure.

Behavioural Determinants for Obesity: A Cross-sectional Study Among Urban Adolescents in India

  • Objectives: To measure the prevalence of behavioural risk factors for obesity among urban adolescent school children in Chennai, India. Methods: This study was performed as a cross-sectional study using a World Health Organization-designed Global School-based Student Health Survey questionnaire (modified for India) among adolescent school children studying in 30 randomly selected secondary and higher secondary schools in Chennai city. 1842 adolescents studying in the VIII to XII standards were randomly selected for the study. Results: In the present study, 40.7% of the students ate fruit one or more times per day and 74.5% of the students ate vegetables one or more times per day. Nearly 20% of the students ate fast food items on 4 to 7 days during the previous week. Among the students, 30.4% watched television for more than two hours per day. Nearly 68% of the girls and 22% of the boys did not participate in outdoor sports activities. When the pattern of physical activity of the students was assessed, it was observed that 15.6% were inactive, 43.4% were minimally active, and the remaining 41.0% belonged to the category of health enhancing physical activity. Among the students, 6.2% were overweight and 5.2% were obese. Conclusions: The prevalence of risk factors for obesity was quite high among the adolescents. This study also showed that a great proportion of overweight/obese adolescents had a correct perception of their body weight and they were making efforts to modify risk factors such as television viewing, computer use, a sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy dietary habits.

주야2교대제에서 주간연속2교대제로의 전환 후 스트레스반응의 감소와 관련인자: 일개 완성차 제조사의 사례 (Decrease in Stress Response and Related Factors After Transition to Consecutive Day Shift from Day and Night Shift: A Motor Assembly Factory Case)

  • Objectives: The major objective of this study was to analyze stress response after a change to consecutive day shifts from day and night shifts in a motor assembly factory. Methods: Using a survey conducted by a labor union, we collected data on stress response index(SRI), lifestyle factors, work-family conflict and job stress before and after a shift system change. We analyzed the transition on the SRI among 222 workers. The cut-off point for the SRI was a T-score over 60. Results: The high risk stress response group was 20.3% of the population before the shift system change. After the shift system change it decreased to 11.3%. After the shift system change, social support improved, leisure time became more sufficient, work-family conflict declined, and sleep quality in the night shift week improved. In multivariable linear regression, among workers under 40 years old sleep quality on night shift, leisure time sufficiency, social support and work-family conflict contributed to the improvement of stress response. Among workers over 40, work-family conflict contributed to the improvement of stress response. Conclusions: The change to consecutive day shifts improved stress response and mediated with improved nighttime sleep, decreased work-family conflict, increased leisure time and improved work-family conflict.

Anti-oxidant and Hepatoprotective Activities of Alcoholic Extract of Terminalia arjuna

  • Alcoholic extract of Terminalia arjuna [TA] was evaluated far its hepatoprotective activity against carbon tetrachloride (CCl$_4$)-induced hepatic damage in rats. The hepatoprotective activity of TA was evaluated by measuring levels of serum marker enzymes like serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP). The serum levels of total proteins(TP), total albumins (TAL) and bilirubin (BILN) were also estimated. The histological studies were also carried out to support the above parameters. Silymarin (SM) was used as standard drug. Administration of TA (250 and 500 mg/kg/po) markedly prevented CCl$_4$-induced elevation of levels of SGOT, SGPT, SALP, TP, TAL and BILN. These biochemical observations were supplemented by histopathological examination of liver sections. Alcoholic extract of TA also shown significant in-vitro free radical scavenging activity against 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) radicals. Thus, the present study provides a scientific rationale for the traditional use of this plant in the management of liver diseases.

  • A Total Mean Cordial labeling of a graph G = (V, E) is a function $f:V(G){\rightarrow}\{0,1,2\}$ such that $f(xy)={\Large\lceil}\frac{f(x)+f(y)}{2}{\Large\rceil}$ where $x,y{\in}V(G)$, $xy{\in}E(G)$, and the total number of 0, 1 and 2 are balanced. That is ${\mid}ev_f(i)-ev_f(j){\mid}{\leq}1$, $i,j{\in}\{0,1,2\}$ where $ev_f(x)$ denotes the total number of vertices and edges labeled with x (x = 0, 1, 2). If there is a total mean cordial labeling on a graph G, then we will call G is Total Mean Cordial. Here, We investigate the Total Mean Cordial labeling behaviour of prism, gear, helms.

AN OPTIMAL INEQUALITY FOR WARPED PRODUCT LIGHTLIKE SUBMANIFOLDS

  • In this paper, we establish several geometric characterizations focusing on the relationship between the squared norm of the second fundamental form and the warping function of SCR-lightlike warped product submanifolds in an indefinite Kaehler manifold. In particular, we find an estimate for the squared norm of the second fundamental form h in terms of the Hessian of the warping function λ for SCR-lightlike warped product submanifolds of an indefinite complex space form. Consequently, we derive an optimal inequality, namely $${\parallel}h{\parallel}^2{\geq}2q\{{\Delta}(ln{\lambda})+{\parallel}{\nabla}(ln{\lambda}){\parallel}^2+\frac{c}{2}p\}$$, for SCR-lightlike warped product submanifolds in an indefinite complex space form. We also provide one non-trivial example for this class of warped products in an indefinite Kaehler manifold.
