The effectiveness of add-on tertiary treatment processes for the polishing of the effluent of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) system from a modified $A^2/O$ process has been examined under the field condition with pilot-scale plants. The add-on treatment processes of 1) combined biofilm anoxic reactor and sand filtration, and 2) two-stage denitrification filter had been operated with various operating conditions. The experimental results indicated that two-stage denitrification filter could produced a better polished tertiary effluent. Filtration rate of $150m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$ for the 2-stage denitrifying filter could decrease the nitrate removal probably due to shorter detention time that caused insufficient reaction for denitrification. Two stage denitrification filter operated with M/N ratio of 3.0 and filtration rate of $100m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$ produced the tertiary effluent with nitrate and SS concentraitons of 2.8 mg/L and 2.3 mg/L, respectively. When the operating temperature reduced $30^{\circ}C$ to $18^{\circ}C$, $NO_3{^-}-N$ removal efficiency decreased from 73% to 68%.
An evaluation of the application of SBR and biofilm en small sewerage system was conducted. A newly developed small sewerage system, using SBR, was successfully applied to the nutrient treatment using municipal wastewater. The system was consisted of 6 compartments. Two systems, with SBR (A type) or without SBR (B type), were compared by several parameters (COD, SS, T-N, NH$_4$$\^$+/-N, NO$_3$$\^$-/-N, NO$_2$$\^$ -/-N, alkalinity, pH, DO) in all experimental periods. Also, the time variation of several parameters (DO, pH, NH$_4$$\^$+/-N, NO$_3$$\^$-/-N NO$_2$$\^$-/-N) was examined in a SBR applied sewerage system. T-N removal efficiency of B type Was higher than that Of A type by the effect of nitrification and denitrification even though the COD removal efficiencies were similar. In aeration stage, the pH was decreased from 6.4 to 6.3 within 1 h and increased to 6.65 at the end of aerobic stage, and pH was decreased to 6.2 in non-aeration stage, and these phenomena were explained. The effects of nitrification and denitrification were compared in A type and B type sewerage system, and the typical nitrification and denitrification were observed in B type sewerage system.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate adaptability of external carbon source using GPS-X program in pilot plant composed with 2-stage denitrification process. The result from analysis of pilot plant operation and GPS-X simulation showed that effluent concentration could be simulated similarly by modifying operation conditions, such as DO concentration, C/N ratio and other calibrated parameter. In order to satisfy the standard of the effluent water quality on T-N of 20mg/L, it required approximately 3.1 of C/N ratio and 50% of nitrogen removal efficiency when influent T-N is 36.9mg/L. To maintain the stable water quality of the receiving water, the effluent T-N concentration should be less than 10-15mg/L and the appropriate C/N ratio to remove nitrogen was 4.27-6.82. The analysis of sensitivity to kinetic coefficient and reaction constant showed that $Y_H$ and ${\mu}_{mAUT}$ were most sensitive to nitrate and ammonia nitrogen, relatively and sensitivity coefficient of their were 1.32, 1.98. It was concluded that as $Y_H$ decreased and ${\mu}_{mAUT}$ increased, the reaction rates of denitrification and nitrification increased and the removal efficiencies of $NO_3{^-}-N$ and $NH_4{^+}-N$ improved.
In this research, a 2-stage intermittently aerated activated sludge system(IA) and intermittently aerated dynamic flow activated sludge system(DF) were investigated for the removal of nutrients in domestic wastewater. Wastewater was characterized by low C/N( organics/nitrogen) ratio. $COD_{cr}$, $BOD_s$, TKN and TP concentrations of domestic wastewater were 235, 47, 32 and 5.4 mg/L, respectively. Three sets of IA and one set of DF were operated. Three of four systems were added with fermented settled sludge taken from primary settling tank as an external electron donor and the other(IA) for control reactor was operated without addition of electron donor. All systems were operated at same sludge retention time of 20 days and hydraulic retention time of 12hrs. The supplemental electron donor was supplied into the anoxic mode. A higher denitrification rate was observed from the reactors with fermented settled sludge as an electron donor for denitrification compared to that of without addition of organic source. The result of this study indicates that the settled primary sludge, if the fermented at the acid stage, was an excellent electron donor for denitrification. 81 % of TN and 80% of TP were removed from the systems with the supplemental organic source added. However, the control reactor without addition of electron donor showed only 39% of TN and 43% of TP.
Nitrate contamination in surface water and ground water have increased in Korea. This trend has raised concern because nitrates caused methemoglobinemia in infants. To remove nitrates from waters, various purification processes including ion-exchange, biological denitrification, and chemical denitrification are currently in use for the treatment of water. However, little economically advantageous process exists for the industrial scale treatment of effluents highly polluted with nitrates. A new process has been developed for nitrate and other salts removal from polluted waters. Alumina cement and lime served as precipitating agents to remove nitrate with stirring at basic pH. Decreasing alumina content in alumina cement result in a increasing in nitrate removal yield. Stable removal of nitrate(1000mg/L) was readily achieved by two-stage removal process.
The purpose of this study is to develop effective operating process in order to achieve more suitable conditions of Anoxic-Oxic-Anoxic-Stripper(AOAS) SBR through real-time control. To improve the removal efficiency, glucose, methanol and synthetic food waste acid fermentant were added as an external carbon source, In the case of glucose and synthetic food waste acid fermentant, TN, TP were removed to average 86.9%, 73.0% respectively. Methanol was removed to average 64.6%, 55.4% respectively. The synthetic food waste acid fermentant proved to be the most efficient and allowed for the substitution of an external carbon source. The removal rate of $COD_{Cr}$, was approximately 90% at all cases. The results of the study that a correlation between ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential), pH and DO and nitrification or denitrification when an external carbon source is added and when it isn't was showed that ${\Delta}ORP$ is suitable parameter. ORP reacted properly to denitrification (${\Delta}ORP<-10$) and nitrification (${\Delta}ORP<0$). The use of real-time control saved anywhere between 61 and 67 minutes at the anoxic(1) stage and 26 to 52 minutes at the oxic(1) stage. When the time saved from the anoxic(1) and oxic(1) was added to the anoxic(2) stage for the removal efficiency of TN and TP increased from 0.7 to 13.9% and 12 to 35 % respectively.
In order to determine reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) when the submerged membrane bioreactor with granular sulfur (MBR-GS) is used in wastewater treatment plant (WTP), the amount of GHGs was compared and analyzed in the advanced treatment process of P wastewater treatment plant (WTP). The amount of GHGs was estimated by classifying as construction and operation phase in WTP. The amount of GHGs in construction phase was evaluated from multiplying raw materials by using carbon emission factors. Also the amount of GHGs in operating phase was calculated by using total electricity consumption and carbon emission factor. The construction of anoxic tank and secondary settling tank is unnecessary, because the MBR-GS conducts simultaneously the nitrification and denitrification in aeration tank and filtration by hollow fiber membrane. The amount of $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2O$ emitted by constructing the MBR-GS was 6.44E+06 kg, 8.16E+03 kg and 1.38E+01 kg, respectively. The result shows that the GHGs was reduced about 47 % as compared with the construction in the MLE process. In operating the MBR-GS, the electricity is not required in the biological reactor and secondary setting tank. Thus, the amount of $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2O$ emitted by operating in the MBR-GS was 7.39E+05 kg/yr, 5.80E+02 kg/yr and 2.44E+00 kg/yr, respectively. The result shows that the GHGs were reduced about 37 % as compared with the operation in the MLE process. Also, $LCCO_2$(Life Cycle $CO_2$) was compared and analyzed between MLE process and MBR-GS. The amount of $LCCO_2 $emitted from the MLE process and MBR-GS was 3.56E+04 ton $CO_2$ and 2.12E+04 ton $CO_2$, respectively. The result shows that the GHGs in MBR-GS were reduced to about 40 % as compared in the MLE process during life cycle. As a result, sulfur-utilizing autotrophic denitrification process (SADP) is expected to be utilized as the cost-effective advanced treatment process, owing to not only high nitrogen removal efficiency but also the GHGs reduction in construction and operation stage.

EQPS (Effluent Quality Prediction System, Dynamita, France) was applied to analyze the appropriateness of the design of a bioreactor in A sewage treatment plant. A sewage treatment plant was designed by setting the design concentration of the secondary clarifier effluent to total nitrogen and total phosphorus, 10 mg/L and 1.8 mg/L, respectively, in order to comply with the target water quality at the level of the hydrophilic water. The retention time of the 4-stage BNR reactor was 9.6 hours, which was 0.5 for the pre-anoxic tank, 1.0 for the anaerobic tank, 2.9 for the anoxic tank, and 5.2 hours for the aerobic tank. As a result of the modeling of the winter season, the retention time of the anaerobic tank was increased by 0.2 hours in order to satisfy the target water quality of the hydrophilic water level. The default coefficients of the one step nitrification denitrification model proposed by the software manufacturer were used to exclude distortion of the modeling results. Since the process modeling generally presents optimal conditions, the retention time of the 4-stage BNR should be increased to 9.8 hours considering the bioreactor margin. The accurate use of process modeling in the design stage of the sewage treatment plant is a way to ensure the stability of the treatment performance and efficiency after construction of the sewage treatment plant.
In this research, Effect of C/N ratio on nutrient removal in intermittently aerated activated sludge system(IAASS) was investigated with dormitary, building and swine wastewater. Three types (2-stage, 4-stage, modified) of IAASS were operated. Time interval of aeration/nonaeration in IAASS was 1hr/1hr. In treatment of Dormitary wastewater(BOD/T-N ratio : 4.4), Building wastewater (BOD/T-N ratio : 3.14) and swine wastewater(BOD/T-N ratio : 3.84), Nitrogen removal efficiency of 80, 70 and 90.4% was achieved, respectively. Nitrogen removal in IAASS was a great influenced on influent C/N ratio, efficient nitrogen removal was achieved at BOD/T-N ratio over 4. In IAASS operation, $\Delta $BOD mg/L/$\Delta $ nitrogen mg/L ratio was about 4-6. Simultaneous removal of organic, nitrogen and phosphorus in IAASS can achieved. And influent organic was efficiently utilized in denitrification. IAASS could be one of the best alternative process for the retrofit of conventional activated sludge system for the removal of nutrients.
This bench-scale research investigated the aeration cycle(on/off) as the controlling factors for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a 2-stage, intermittent aeration process. At this experiment, the aeration cycle time(air-on/air-off) was 30min/30min, 60min/60min, 90min/90min. Organic matter removal was observed more than 90% regardless of the aeration cycle and phosphorus removal was relatively high when the aeration cycle time was 60min/60min On the other hand. For all of the aeration cycle, TN removal was appeared less than 55%. This result was probably due to the limitation of the external substrate for heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.
