  • In this study, the treatability of two target contaminants during the Fenton reaction, n-hexadecane and 1-methylnaphthalene, was evaluated as a function of the amounts of $FeCl_2$ and $H_2O_2$ injected into open and closed reaction systems. In the Fenton reaction of n-hexadecane and 1-methylnaphthalene, the mass recovery of the target contaminants was above 95% in the closed system. However, when the Fenton reaction was performed with high amounts of $H_2O_2$ and $FeCl_2$ injected in the open system, a reduction of approximately 40% of the initial mass of 1-methylnaphthalene was observed. This trend may be explained by the unique physical properties of 1-methylnaphthalene, which has higher volatility than n-hexadecane. Further, this trend was well correlated with the rise in high temperature at the initial reaction stage. Considering the mass recovery of the two target contaminants, the reaction temperature, and the residual concentration of $H_2O_2$ at different amounts of $FeCl_2$ and $H_2O_2$ injected, it can be suggested that the Fenton reaction should be performed with controlled conditions that can provide a suitable reaction environment between oxidant and contaminants.

  • Catalytic performances of zeolite catalysts such as H-mordenite(HM), H-Beta$(H{\beta})$, H-USY(HUSY) for the transmethylation between 1-methylnaphthalene(1-MN) and 2-methylnaphthalene(2-MN) were investigated in a fixed-bed flow reactor. $H{\beta}$ showed higher and more stable conversion than others to exhibit a high and stable 2-MN/1-MN ratio of 2.3 and 2,6-DMN/2,7-DMN ratio of 1.3 at the $1^{st}$ hour of time on stream under the reaction conditions as follows: reaction temperature of $350^{\circ}C$, reaction pressure of 1.5 MPa, WHSV of $2.7g_{feed}/g_{cat}{\cdot}h$ and the molar ratio of 1-MN and 2-MN of 1:1. The catalytic behavior has been discussed in relation with the catalyst pore structure and acidity.

  • In this study, the tar compounds derived from the plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis were first identified and then quantified via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography (GC). 2-Picoline, 2,5-xylenol, acenaphthene, 1-methylnaphthalene and o-xylene were found to be the major tar compounds by biomass. These compounds were identified and confirmed by comparing their retention times with those of authentic compounds. Each compound also spiked with the pure standard. The contents of 2-picoline, 2,5-xylenol, acenaphthene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and o-xylene in biomass were 0.2512, 0.1586, 0.1240, 0.0942 and 0.0525 wt%, respectively. Liquid-liquid extraction and adsorbent treatment were able to remove 42% and 94% of the tars from biomass, respectivly. After hexane precipitation, all of the tars were perfectly removed.

  • The reduction of nitrogen-containing compounds (NC) containing the model crude methylnaphthalene oil (CMNO) of 5 compounds system was experimentally studied by solvent extraction. The model CMNO consisting of 3 kinds of NC including quinolone (QU), iso-quinoline (IQU), indole(IN) and 2 kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds such as 1-methylnaphthalene (1MNA), 2-methylnaphthalene (2MNA) as raw materials, as well as the aqueous solution of formamide as a solvent, were used. The increase in the volume fraction of water to the solvent at the initial state (yw,0) sharply decreased, but the distribution coefficient and the yield of NC conversely increased the selectivity of NC based on 2MNA, and an increase in the volume fraction of solvent to feed (S/F) simultaneously increased the distribution coefficient, yield and selectivity of NC. The yields of QU, IQU and IN under constant conditions (yw,0 = 0.1, S/F = 1, equilibrium temperature 303 K) were 30%, 31% and 10%, respectively, and selectivity was 15, 15 and 20, respectively. From the excellent yield and selectivity of NC, the formamide extraction method of this study was expected as a method for reducing the NC contained in the model CMNO.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify off-flavor compounds in sea mustard and rice syrup sold in the markets. Naphthalenes such as naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,5-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,8-dimethylnaphthalene, 2,7-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,4,6-trimethylnaphthalene, 2,3,6-trimethylnaphthalene etc., were present in sea mustard, while free fatty acids such as butanoic acid, hexanoic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, dodecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid and 2-furanmethanol, 2-furancarboxaldehyde etc. in rice syrup. The former (naphthalenes) have been supposed to be contaminents from paint of ship and the latter (free fatty acids) derived from deteriorated rice for saccharification. From the results of the samples studied, formation of their off-flavor compounds seems to be related with the condition of storage, the process of production and circulation in the markets.

  • In order to purify 2-methylnaphthalene as main impurity included in naphthalene, SLE (solid-liquid equilibria) on two components system including naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene were measured and a layered melt crystallization has been studied. SLE in the present system is shown a simple eutectic mixture and the experimental results using DSC method is similar to the static method. Purity and yield of naphthalene in crystal depended mainly on the cooling rate: Increasing cooling rate, the purity of naphthalene in crystal increase, whereas the yield of that decrease. The effective distribution coefficient (Keff) as the degree of impurity removal was observed to decrease with decreasing of cooling rate. Therefore, the purity of naphthalene by melt crystallization can be enhanced to 5~7 %.

  • The separation of indole from a model mixture comprising four kinds of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds [indole (In), quinoline (Q), iso-quinoline (iQ), quinaldine (Qu)], three kinds of bicyclic aromatic compounds [1-methylnaphthalene (1MN), 2-methylnaphthalene (2MN), dimethylnaphthalene (DMN)], biphenyl (Bp) and phenyl ether (Pe) was examined by batch cocurrent 4 stages equilibrium extraction. The model mixture used as a raw material in this work was prepared according to the components and compositions contained in coal tar fraction (the temperature ranges of fraction: $240{\sim}265^{\circ}C$). An aqueous solution of formamide was used as a solvent. Indole was recovered more than 99% through 4 stages of the equilibrium extraction. The range of selectivity of indole in reference to DMN obtained through the 5 stages equilibrium extraction was found to be 63~118. The process for separation and recovery of indole contained in coal tar was studied by using the experimental results obtained from this work and the previous work.

  • Separation of naphthalene from naphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene mixture has been studied by layered melt and solution crystallization using ethylalcohol. Purity and yield of naphthalene depended mainly on the cooling rate: The effective distribution coefficient ($K_{eff}$) as the degree of impurity removal was observed to decrease with the decreasing in cooling rate. Purity of naphthalene can be enhanced to $5{\sim}7%$ by melt crystallization using 90% naphthalene and the purity of naphthalene can be obtained to be 99% up by solution crystallization.
