The wind flow over two-dimensional sinusoidal hilly obstacles with slope (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.5 has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments for single and double sinusoidal hill models were carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel. The mean velocity profiles, turbulence statistics, and surface pressure distributions were measured at the Reynolds number based on the obstacle height(h=40 mm) of $2.6{\times}10^4$. The reattachment points behind the obstacles were determined using the oil-ink dot and tuft methods. The smoke-wire method was employed to visualize the flow structure qualitatively. The finite-volume-method and the SIMPLE-C algorithm with an orthogonal body-fitted grid were used for numerical simulation. Comparison of mean velocity profiles between the experiments and the numerical simulation shows a good agreement except for the separation region, however, the surface pressure data show almost similar distributions.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics and the flow structure in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. The maximum value of Nusselt number at stagnation point is observed at H/B=10. It is found that this trend has been caused by the effect of stretching of large scale vortex in the stagnation region. For potential core region the Nusselt number distribution in the downstream of the stagnation point decreases gradually and begins to increase at about X/B=3. From the flow visualization it could be seen that small eddy produced from the nozzle edge grows in large scale and that large scale eddy disturbed the thermal boundary layer on the heating plate. The local average Nusselt number becomes maximum at X/B=0.5 regardless of H/B variation.
Common stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display has a convergence and accommodation conflict that violates the natural human cognitive process of viewing. This weakness exposes the challenge in supporting fun factors while eliminating safety problems in the 3D viewing experience. Thus, human factors have become a major research topic. In this letter, we propose a 3D stereoscopic visualization platform that can expand the sense of a 3D space by fusing organically mixed stereoscopic displays to provide a continuous feeling of 3D depth. In addition, we present pilot test results to show the possibility of the technical implementation of the proposed platform and note ongoing research issues to be addressed.
The shock wave discharged from an annular duct leads to very complicated flow features, such as Mach stem, spherical waves, and vortex rings. In the current study, the merging phenomenon and propagation characteristics of the shock wave are numerically investigated using a CFD method. The Harten-Yee's total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to the unsteady, axisymmetric, two-dimensional, compressible Euler equations. The Mach number of incident shock wave $M_s$ is varied in the range below 2.0. The computational results are visualized to observe the major features of the annular shock waves discharged from the tube. On the symmetric axis, the peak pressure produced by the shock wave and its location depend upon strongly the radius of the annular tubes. A Mach stem is generated along the symmetric axis of the annular tubes.
Visualization of the electromagnetic vector fields are presented and examined with Mathematica. Vector fields may be used to represent a great of many physical quantities in various area of physics, including electromagnetism with vector differential operators. Because they deal with abstract, three-dimensional fields that are some times very difficult to visualize, electromagnetism can be conceptually rather difficult. Visual representation of such an abstract vector fields is invaluable to student or researchers working in this field and also helps teaching electromagnetism to physics or engineering students. Mathematica provides a wider range of graphical tools including plot of vector fields and vector analysis, which can be applied to visualization of electromagnetic system. We have visualized the most fundamental concepts of the electromagnetic vector $\vec{E}=-\vec{\nabla}_{\varphi}$, $\vec{D}={\epsilon}\vec{E}$, $\vec{\nabla}{\times}\vec{A}$, $\vec{B}={\mu}\vec{H}$, $\vec{B}={\mu}_0(\vec{H}+\vec{M})$, which are confirmed with vector calculations and valid graphically with some presentations.
In this paper, we constructed horizontal and vertical virtual spaces using the projection table and the projection wall. We then implemented a system that stereoscopically visualizes three-dimensional (3D) buildings in the virtual environments in accordance with the user's viewing point. The projection table, a kind of horizontal display equipment, is effectively used in reproducing operations on a table or desk as well as in areas that require bird-eye views because its viewing frustum allows to view things from above. On the other hand, the large projection wall, a kind of vertical display equipment, is effectively used in navigating virtual spaces because its viewing frustum allows to take a front view. In this paper, we provided quick interaction between the user and virtual objects by representing major objects as detail 3D models and a background as images. We also augmented the reality by properly integrating models and images with user's locations and viewpoint in different virtual environments.
In medical imaging, three-dimensional (3D) display using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) as a portable file format can give intuitive information more efficiently on the World Wide Web (WWW). The web-based 3D visualization of functional images combined with anatomical images has not studied much in systematic ways. The goal of this study was to achieve a simultaneous observation of 3D anatomic and functional models with planar images on the WWW, providing their locational information in 3D space with a measuring implement using VRML. MRI and ictal-interictal SPECT images were obtained from one epileptic patient. Subtraction ictal SPECT co-registered to MRI (SISCOM) was performed to improve identification of a seizure focus. SISCOM image volumes were held by thresholds above one standard deviation (1-SD) and two standard deviations (2-SD). SISCOM foci and boundaries of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the MRI volume were segmented and rendered to VRML polygonal surfaces by marching cube algorithm. Line profiles of x and y-axis that represent real lengths on an image were acquired and their maximum lengths were the same as 211.67 mm. The real size vs. the rendered VRML surface size was approximately the ratio of 1 to 605.9. A VRML measuring tool was made and merged with previous VRML surfaces. User interface tools were embedded with Java Script routines to display MRI planar images as cross sections of 3D surface models and to set transparencies of 3D surface models. When transparencies of 3D surface models were properly controlled, a fused display of the brain geometry with 3D distributions of focal activated regions provided intuitively spatial correlations among three 3D surface models. The epileptic seizure focus was in the right temporal lobe of the brain. The real position of the seizure focus could be verified by the VRML measuring tool and the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus could be confirmed by MRI planar images crossing 3D surface models. The VRML application developed in this study may have several advantages. Firstly, 3D fused display and control of anatomic and functional image were achieved on the m. Secondly, the vector analysis of a 3D surface model was defined by the VRML measuring tool based on the real size. Finally, the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus was intuitively detected by correlations with MRI images. Our web based visualization of 3-D fusion image and its localization will be a help to online research and education in diagnostic radiology, therapeutic radiology, and surgery applications.

Geo-features play a key role in object-oriented or feature-based geo-processing system. So the strategy for how-to-model and how-to-manage the geo-features builds the main architecture of the entire system and also supports the efficiency and functionality of the system. Unlike the conventional 2D geo-processing system, geo-features in 3D GIS have lots to be considered to model regarding the efficient manipulation and analysis and visualization. When the system is running on the Web, it should also be considered that how to leverage the level of detail and the level of automation of modeling in addition to the support for client side data interoperability. We built a set of 3D geo-features, and each geo-feature contains a set of aspatial data and 3D geo-primitives. The 3D geo-primitives contain the fundamental modeling data such as the height of building and the burial depth of gas pipeline. We separated the additional modeling data on the geometry and appearance of the model from the fundamental modeling data to make the table in database more concise and to allow the users more freedom to represent the geo-object. To get the users to build and exchange their own data, we devised a fie format called VGFF 2.0 which stands for Virtual GIS File Format. It is to describe the three dimensional geo-information in XML(extensible Markup Language). The DTD(Document Type Definition) of VGFF 2.0 is parsed using the DOM(Document Object Model). We also developed the authoring tools for users can make their own 3D geo-features and model and save the data to VGFF 2.0 format. We are now expecting the VGFF 2.0 evolve to the 3D version of SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) especially for 3D GIS on the Web.
To find the effective combinations of blowing ratio and injection angle for a straight slot film cooling, film cooling characteristics was investigated using both flow visualization experiment and numerical simulation. Injection angles from $15^{\circ}\;to\;50^{\circ}$ and blowing ratios from 0.2 to 3.0 were selected for the simulation. Comparison between experimental and numerical results shows a good agreement, for the case of the injection angle of $30^{\circ}$ and blowing ratio ranging from 0.55 to 2.0. Film cooling effectiveness was found to be an increasing function of blowing ratio. The effects of injection angle became prominent as the blowing ratio increases. An interesting phenomenon was found for the injection angle of $15^{\circ}$ : the lowest film cooling effectiveness for the blowing ratio smaller than 1.0, but the highest film cooling effectiveness for the blowing ratio greater than 2.0 within wide range of downstream region. There exist optimum injection angles corresponding to maximum film cooling effectiveness : injection angle of $25^{\circ}$ for the blowing ratio from 0.2 to 2.0, and injection angle of $15^{\circ}$ for the blowing ratio of 3.0. Present study provides a design combination among film cooling effectiveness, blowing ratio, and injection angle.
A typical approach to visualizing k (${\geq}2$)-group multidimensional data is to use Fisher's canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). CDA finds the best low-dimensional subspace that accommodates k group centroids in the Mahalanobis space. This paper proposes an alternative visualization procedure functioning in the Euclidean space, which finds the primary dimension with maximum discrimination of k group centroids and the secondary dimension with maximum dispersion of all observational units. This hybrid procedure is especially useful when the number of groups k is two.
