Carbon nanotube field emission display

  • Fully sealed field emission display in size of 4.5 inch has been fabricated using single-wall carbon nanotubes-organic vehicle com-posite. The fabricated display were fully scalable at low temperature below 415$^{\circ}C$ and CNTs were vertically aligned using paste squeeze and surface rubbing techniques. The turn-on fields of 1V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and field emis-sion current of 1.5mA at 3V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (J=90${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$)were observed. Brightness of 1800cd/$m^2$ at 3.7V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was observed on the entire area of 4.5-inch panel from the green phosphor-ITO glass. The fluctuation of the current was found to be about 7% over a 4.5-inch cath-ode area. This reliable result enables us to produce large area full-color flat panel dis-play in the near future. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention because of their unique elec-trical properties and their potential applica-tions [1, 2]. Large aspect ratio of CNTs together with high chemical stability. ther-mal conductivity, and high mechanical strength are advantageous for applications to the field emitter [3]. Several results have been reported on the field emissions from multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) and single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) grown from arc discharge [4, 5]. De Heer et al. have reported the field emission from nan-otubes aligned by the suspension-filtering method. This approach is too difficult to be fully adopted in integration process. Recently, there have been efforts to make applications to field emission devices using nanotubes. Saito et al. demonstrated a car-bon nanotube-based lamp, which was oper-ated at high voltage (10KV) [8]. Aproto-type diode structure was tested by the size of 100mm $\times$ 10mm in vacuum chamber [9]. the difficulties arise from the arrangement of vertically aligned nanotubes after the growth. Recently vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been synthesized using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(CVD) [6, 7]. Yet, control of a large area synthesis is still not easily accessible with such approaches. Here we report integra-tion processes of fully sealed 4.5-inch CNT-field emission displays (FEDs). Low turn-on voltage with high brightness, and stabili-ty clearly demonstrate the potential applica-bility of carbon nanotubes to full color dis-plays in near future. For flat panel display in a large area, car-bon nanotubes-based field emitters were fabricated by using nanotubes-organic vehi-cles. The purified SWNTs, which were syn-thesized by dc arc discharge, were dispersed in iso propyl alcohol, and then mixed with on organic binder. The paste of well-dis-persed carbon nanotubes was squeezed onto the metal-patterned sodalime glass throuhg the metal mesh of 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size and subse-quently heat-treated in order to remove the organic binder. The insulating spacers in thickness of 200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are inserted between the lower and upper glasses. The Y\ulcornerO\ulcornerS:Eu, ZnS:Cu, Al, and ZnS:Ag, Cl, phosphors are electrically deposited on the upper glass for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The typical sizes of each phosphor are 2~3 micron. The assembled structure was sealed in an atmosphere of highly purified Ar gas by means of a glass frit. The display plate was evacuated down to the pressure level of 1$\times$10\ulcorner Torr. Three non-evaporable getters of Ti-Zr-V-Fe were activated during the final heat-exhausting procedure. Finally, the active area of 4.5-inch panel with fully sealed carbon nanotubes was pro-duced. Emission currents were character-ized by the DC-mode and pulse-modulating mode at the voltage up to 800 volts. The brightness of field emission was measured by the Luminance calorimeter (BM-7, Topcon).

SO2 및 NO2 포함 고압 CO2 스트림이 인산염 코팅 CO2 수송관 부식에 미치는 영향 (Study of the corrosion effect of CO2 stream with SO2 and NO2 on a phosphate coated steel tube)

  • 지구온난화 및 기후변화 대응기술로써 세계 각국은 CCS(이산화탄소 포집 및 저장)에 주목하고 있으며 관련 기술개발을 위해 노력하고 있다. CCS는 크게 포집, 수송, 저장 공정으로 이루어져 있으며, 이중 포집공정에서는 이산화탄소 외에 다양한 불순물이 불가피하게 유입될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 $SO_2$$NO_2$ 가스와 수분이 포함된 $CO_2$ 스트림이 $CO_2$ 수송관 부식에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 실험을 수행하였다. 시편은 인산염 코팅된 철관이며 내부에 $SO_2$, $NO_2$, $H_2O$ 불순물이 혼합된 $CO_2$ 스트림을 채우고 이를 100바, $29^{\circ}C$의 환경 하에서 부식특성 변화를 관찰하였다. 시편의 부식특성 변화를 관찰하기 위해 SEM촬영 및 EDS 측정 등을 진행하였다. 실험결과 $SO_2$$NO_2$가 주입된 모든 시편에서 한계용해도를 초과하지 않는 수분농도 조건 하에서도 부식이 발생하였으므로 불순물 농도를 엄격히 관리할 필요가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 $SO_2$$NO_2$와 같은 불순물이 존재하지 않는 상황에서는 한계용해도를 고려한 수분제어만으로 부식관리가 가능할 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구결과에 근거하여 고압 $CO_2$ 스트림 내 $SO_2$$NO_2$의 농도는 각각 175ppm 및 65ppm 미만으로 유지할 것을 제안하는 바이다.

북한 산림전용 방지수단으로서의 REDD 사업의 경제적 타당성 분석 (Economic Feasibility of REDD Project for Preventing Deforestation in North Korea)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 북한지역의 REDD 탄소배출권 잠재량과 그 사업비용을 추정하여 REDD 사업의 경제적 타당성을 가늠해 보는 데에 있다. 북한지역의 REDD 잠재량은 국제통계의 1990년부터 2010년까지의 산림면적과 인구수를 활용하여 산정하였으며, REDD 사업비용은 북한에서 단위면적 당 생산할 수 있는 식량을 남한이 지원해준다고 가정하고, 농업 부문의 토지기회비용을 활용하여 간접 추정하였다. 북한지역의 산림전용을 참조수준 대비 25% 감소시키는 시나리오를 적용했을 때의 REDD 탄소배출권 잠재량은 20년간 4,232만~5,290만$tCO_2eq.$으로 추정되었다. 이는 우리나라 중기 온실가스 감축 목표의 28~35%에 해당하는 양이다. 한편, 북한지역에서 산림 농지로 전용한 곳에서 농사를 지을 때 얻을 수 있는 수익과 같은 수준의 REDD 사업의 수익이 보장되는 REDD 크레딧 가격, 즉 REDD 사업의 손익분기가격은 산림의 비영속성에 대한 위험율을 20%로 가정할 경우 19.19$/$tCO_2eq.$으로 추정되었다. 이 가격은 2010년 자발적 시장에서 거래된 REDD 탄소배출권 가격인 5$/$tCO_2eq.$보다 높아 경제적 타당성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 REDD 사업이 탄소 흡수 이외에 공편익을 제공한다는 점에서는 선행연구에서 제시한 산림소실에 의한 온실가스 배출의 사회적 한계비용인 20$/$tCO_2eq.$보다 낮다는 점에서 그 타당성을 인정할 수 있다. 북한에서의 REDD 사업의 타당성은 위험율에 의해 결정된다고 할 것이다. 따라서 북한지역 REDD 사업의 경제적 타당성을 담보하기 위해서는 북한 정부와 주민들의 사업에 대한 확고한 보장과 참여가 필요하다.

한국의 그린 비즈니스/IT 실태분석을 통한 추진전략 우선순위 도출에 관한 연구 (Development of Korean Green Business/IT Strategies Based on Priority Analysis)

  • Recently, the CO2 emission and energy consumption have become critical global issues to decide the future of nations. Especially, the spread of IT products and the increased use of internet and web applications result in the energy consumption and CO2 emission of IT industry though information technologies drive global economic growth. EU, the United States, Japan and other developed countries are using IT related environmental regulations such as WEEE(Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), RoHS(Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substance), REACH(Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of CHemicals) and EuP(Energy using Product), and have established systematic green business/IT strategies to enhance the competitiveness of IT industry. For example, the Japan government proposed the "Green IT initiative" for being compatible with economic growth and environmental protection. Not only energy saving technologies but energy saving systems have been developed for accomplishing sustainable development. Korea's CO2 emission and energy consumption continuously have grown at comparatively high rates. They are related to its industrial structure depending on high energy-consuming industries such as iron and steel Industry, automotive industry, shipbuilding industry, semiconductor industry, and so on. In particular, export proportion of IT manufacturing is quite high in Korea. For example, the global market share of the semiconductor such as DRAM was about 80% in 2008. Accordingly, Korea needs to establish a systematic strategy to respond to the global environmental regulations and to maintain competitiveness in the IT industry. However, green competitiveness of Korea ranked 11th among 15 major countries and R&D budget for green technology is not large enough to develop energy-saving technologies for infrastructure and value chain of low-carbon society though that grows at high rates. Moreover, there are no concrete action plans in Korea. This research aims to deduce the priorities of the Korean green business/IT strategies to use multi attribute weighted average method. We selected a panel of 19 experts who work at the green business related firms such as HP, IBM, Fujitsu and so on, and selected six assessment indices such as the urgency of the technology development, the technology gap between Korea and the developed countries, the effect of import substitution, the spillover effect of technology, the market growth, and the export potential of the package or stand-alone products by existing literature review. We submitted questionnaires at approximately weekly intervals to them for priorities of the green business/IT strategies. The strategies broadly classify as follows. The first strategy which consists of the green business/IT policy and standardization, process and performance management and IT industry and legislative alignment relates to government's role in the green economy. The second strategy relates to IT to support environment sustainability such as the travel and ways of working management, printer output and recycling, intelligent building, printer rationalization and collaboration and connectivity. The last strategy relates to green IT systems, services and usage such as the data center consolidation and energy management, hardware recycle decommission, server and storage virtualization, device power management, and service supplier management. All the questionnaires were assessed via a five-point Likert scale ranging from "very little" to "very large." Our findings show that the IT to support environment sustainability is prior to the other strategies. In detail, the green business /IT policy and standardization is the most important in the government's role. The strategies of intelligent building and the travel and ways of working management are prior to the others for supporting environment sustainability. Finally, the strategies for the data center consolidation and energy management and server and storage virtualization have the huge influence for green IT systems, services and usage This research results the following implications. The amount of energy consumption and CO2 emissions of IT equipment including electrical business equipment will need to be clearly indicated in order to manage the effect of green business/IT strategy. And it is necessary to develop tools that measure the performance of green business/IT by each step. Additionally, intelligent building could grow up in energy-saving, growth of low carbon and related industries together. It is necessary to expand the affect of virtualization though adjusting and controlling the relationship between the management teams.

미세조류 바이오연료 상용화를 위한 주요 인자 연구 (A Review on Major Factors for Microalgae Biofuel Commercialization)

  • Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that are highly productive in the presence of basic renewable natural sources (light, $CO_2$, water and nutrients). They can synthesize lipids, carbohydrates and proteins in a small number of days. Subsequently, these carbon-captured products can be processed into both biofuels and valuable co-products. Additionally, microalgae would be an ideal feedstock for replacing land-based food crops with cellular products as high energy density transportation fuels. These microscopic organisms could contribute a significant amount of renewable energy on a global scale. In Korea, microalgae biofuel research was common in the early 1990s. The research activities were unfortunately stopped due to limited governmental funds and low petroleum prices. Interest in algal biofuels in Korea has been growing recently due to an increased concern over oil prices, energy security, greenhouse gas emissions, and the potential for other biofuel feedstock to compete for limited agricultural resources. The high productivity of microalgae suggests that much of the Korean transportation fuel requirements can be met by biofuels at a production cost competitive with the increasing cost of petroleum seen in early 2008. At this time, the development of microlalgal biomass production technology remains in its infancy. This study reviewed microalgae culture systems and biomass production, harvesting, oil extraction, conversion, and technoeconomical bottlenecks. Many technical and economic barriers to using microalgal biofuels need to be overcome before mass production of microalgal-derived fuel substitutes is possible. However, serious efforts to overcome these barriers could become a large-scale commercial reality. Overall, this study provides a brief overview of the past few decades of global microalgal research.

위성영상과 GIS를 활용한 CO2 지중저장 후보지 선정 (Optimal Site Selection of Carbon Storage Facility using Satellite Images and GIS)

  • 지구온난화의 주범인 이산화탄소가 국제적으로 문제가 되고 있는 가운데, 이산화탄소의 농도 증가를 억제시키기 위해 이산화탄소를 포집하여 장기간 안정적으로 저장시킬 수 있는 탄소 포집 및 저장(Carbon Capture and Storage: CCS) 기술의 개발이 요구되고 있다. CCS 기술은 이산화탄소 저감 방안 중 가장 직접적이고 현실적인 방안으로 각광을 받고 있으나, 이산화탄소 최적 저장지의 선정 및 이산화탄소 지중저장이 야기할 수 있는 부수적인 영향에 대한 분석이 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 경상분지를 대상으로 GIS 기법을 이용하여 CCS 설비를 위한 적지 분석을 수행하고, 현황분석 및 법적분석을 수행하였다. 적지분석에는 지질도, 수치표고모형, 경사도, 토지피복도를 이용한 경중률 분석이 사용되었으며, 현황분석에는 고해상도 위성영상을 활용하였다. 그 결과 연구대상지내 이산화탄소 저장시설 설치를 위한 최적후보지가 선정되었으며, 마지막으로 법적분석에서는 탄소 저장과 관련된 현행 규정 및 탄소 저장시설의 설비 시 문제가 될 수 있는 각종 법적 사항을 조사하였다.

공기업 유휴공간을 활용한 신재생에너지 투자사업에 대한 실물옵션기반 의사결정방안 (Evaluation of Investment Value of Renewable Energy and Decision Making for Market Entry Using the Idle Space of Public Enterprises)

  • 최근 정부는 온실가스감축 문제를 해결할 방안으로 신재생에너지 개발 및 보급 확대를 위한 다양한 정책을 펼치는 등의 노력을 지속하고 있다. 그러나 신재생에너지 사업은 초기 대규모 자금투자, 장기간에 따른 높은 불확실성, 입지의 적정성 등의 다양한 장애요인으로 합리적 투자의사결정에 어려움이 있어 개발 및 보급의 확대에 어려움이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 신재생에너지투자 및 점진적 보급 확대를 도모하는 방안으로써 공기업 관리시설물의 유휴공간을 활용한 신재생에너지사업의 투자가치를 분석하고 효율적 국토개발과 정부 시책을 지원하는 전략적 의사결정 프레임워크를 제시하였다. 사례분석 결과 1000kw용량의 초기투자의 경우 순 현재가치(NPV: Net Present Value, 이하 NPV)가 약 2억8천6백만원으로 산출되었으나, 최대 3000kw용량까지의 확장투자를 고려하였을 경우 -1억3천만원의 가치가 산출되어 사업추진 의사결정의 종합적 판단에 어려움이 있다. 하지만, 계통한계가격(SMP: System Marginal Price, 이하 SMP)불확실성과 확장, 포기옵션을 고려한 실물옵션 가치는 약 4억4천4백만원으로 산출되어 기존 NPV 분석과는 다른 의사결정을 제공할 수 있다. 본 연구결과는 정부시책 지원을 위한 신재생에너지 개발 및 점진적 보급 확대를 위한 의사결정방안을 제공하고, 한국의 신재생에너지 사업 특성을 고려한 적정 부지를 제시한다는 의의가 있다.

도시 주차장내 수목그늘의 경제적 이익 연구 -미국 캘리포니아 데이비스 대학 주차장을 사례로- (A Study on the Economic Benefit of Urban Parking Lot Tree Shading -In the Case of University of California Davis Parking Lot-)

  • The climate of urban area is an unstable type with considerable seasonal variation in precipitation wind speed, and temperature and it grows worse. Besides, ozone is a serious air pollutant in most of large cities. So worldwide, some of large cities are investing in forestry options to offset their climate problems, but lack of information has hindered comparisons of urban un cost effectiveness to other options. This research intends to study the economic benefits of tree shading of 19 parking lots in UCD campus. The economic benefits of tree shading are air conditioning savings, air quality, stormwater run-off, and other benefits. Especially, this study focuses how much the economic benefit of parking lot shading has been increased from 1995 to 2003 year by aerophoto. Some data on dimensions of parking lots and the number, size, tree species, and location of trees around each parking lot was inventoried. Two aerophotos(1995,2003) were used in order to analyze the increasement of tree canopy in 19 parking lots for 8 years. However, increasing coverage of trees and managing them for healthy growth would not be sufficient for avoiding adverse impacts by future climate change. Additional measures should be followed such as an increase of energy use efficiency and development of substitute energy. For example, coverage of trees help to save cooling energy by blocking solar radiation reaching parking cars and building structures through shading, and creating cool micro-climates through evapotranspiration. They also reduce heating demand by decreasing air infiltration and heat conduction out of the interior of buildings. Proper arrangement of vegetation over the parking lots can reduce cooling and heating costs. So proper planting design around hard space paving including species selection and location can significantly save cooling and heating energy. And a reduction in car and building's heating and cooling costs results in the reduction in energy demand which causes to emissions of air pollutants. Total increased tree canopy from 1995 to 2003 is $8,470.45m^2$ and the economic benefits is US$ 5,282.10. The economic benefit of one tree has been US$ 7.21 for 8 years. And an annually increased benefit is US$ 0.9 per a tree. If this kind of study is applied to studying the economic benefits of tree canopy in parking lots of Korea, it could result in guidelines of tree planting of parking lots. Because the trees selected for planting in parking lots were not suitable for an environment, the guidelines should contain a recommended list of trees. The guidelines should propose the shading percentage of parking lot when we plan a parking lot and contain the maintenance of trees in order to maximize the economic benefits of tree canopy.

경기도 내 대기 중 다이옥신 분포 특성에 관한 연구 (Atmospheric Distribution of PCDD/F Concentrations in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea)

  • Atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated dibezo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) were investigated at urban-residential (Group I: Suwon, Guri and Goyang), industrial (Group II: Ansan, Siheung and Bucheon), urban-rural mixed (Group III: Yangju, Pocheon and Dongducheon) and rural regions (Group IV: Yangpyeong) in Gyeonggi-do from February 2012 to November 2012 quarterly. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs ranged from 0.018 to $0.109pgTEQm^{-3}$ in Group I (mean value: $0.061pgTEQm^{-3}$), 0.059 to $0.367pgTEQm^{-3}$ in Group II (mean value: $0.179pgTEQm^{-3}$), 0.072 to $0.836pgTEQm^{-3}$ in Group III (mean value: $0.334pgTEQm^{-3}$) and 0.014 to $0.066pgTEQm^{-3}$ in Group IV (mean value: $0.034pgTEQm^{-3}$), respectively. In spite of the less PCDD/F emission sources than Group II (industrial regions), the level of PCDD/Fs in urban-rural mixed area showed the highest values with high fluctuation. It's likely that the Group III was affected by fugitive emissions such like biomass burning and unregulated open burning. The mean contribution of particle phase to total PCDD/F concentration was above 83% because most of PCDD/F congeners were partitioned into particle phase. We evaluated their gas-to-particles equilibriums with the regression between the particle-gas partition coefficient, $K_P(m^3{\mu}g^{-1})$ and corresponding subcooled liquid vapor pressure ($P_L$). The logarithm-$K_P$ of PCDD/Fs was poorly correlated with $P_L$ at low ambient temperature (below $10^{\circ}C$) and the slope (m) values for log-log plots of the $K_P$ vs. $P_L$ was steeper in the Group 2 and Group 3 than residential area. It implies that the slope values were likely influenced by both the direct emission source of PCDD/Fs and ambient temperature.

  • 소수력은 신재생에너지 중에서도 온실가스 배출량이 가장 적은 청정에너지중의 하나이며, 국내 부존량이 매우 풍부하기 때문에 최근 개발에 대한 필요성이 부각되고 있다. 그러나 국내에서 소수력 개발을 위한 자원조사나 연구는 1990년대 이후 매우 미흡한 상황이어서 체계적인 연구가 뒷받침 되어야 할 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 소수력 개발의 계획단계에서 입지분석을 위한 방법론을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해서 제약기준과 입지기준을 설정하고 가중치를 부여하였으며, 각 요인들의 정량화 방법을 제시하였다. 특히, 최근 시설물 입지분석에 광범위하게 사용되고 있는 지형공간정보체계를 활용하는 분석절차를 수립하고 자동탐색이 가능한 시스템모형을 개발하여 분석의 객관성과 정밀성을 제고하는데 중점을 두었다. 개발된 방법론은 금강수계의 보청천에 적용하였으며 분석결과, 댐식 4개소, 수로식 2개소를 입지로 선정하였다. 본 연구는 향후 소수력 개발 활성화에 대비한 기초연구로서 의의가 있다.
