  • This study analyzed the propagation of dam-break waves in an area directly downstream of a dam by using 3D numerical modeling with RANS as the governing equation. In this area, the flow of the waves has three dimensional characteristics due to the instantaneous dam break. In particular, the dam-break flows are characterized by a highly unsteady and discontinuous flow, a mixture of the sharp flood waves and their reflected waves, a mixture of subcritical and supercritical flow, and propagation in a dry and movable bed. 2D numerical modeling, in which the governing equation is the shallow water equation, was regarded as restricted in terms of dealing with the sharp fluctuation of the water level at the dam-breaking point and water level vibration at the reservoir. However, in this 30 analysis of flood wave propagation due to partial dam breaking and dam-break in channels with $90^{\circ}$ bend, those phenomena were properly simulated. In addition, the flood wave and bed profiles in a movable bed with a flat/upward/downward bed step, which represents channel aggradation or degradation, was also successfully simulated.

  • Sediment release openings or pipes are installed in the flood control dam constructed to reduce flood damages, which are to allow water and sediments pass through the dam and to prevent flow blockage and sedimentation in the upstream area of the dam. The Hantan River Flood Control Dam (HRFCD) has been projected for flood damage reduction and sediment release openings and ecological passages are considered for the dam design. In this study, sediment deposition due to the construction of HRFCD was analyzed using the HEC-6 model and compared with the state before the dam construction with respect to the conditions of the annual mean daily discharge and annual discharge hydrograph. According to the numerical results, although downstream water levels were changed by the dam structure, the effects of bed changes were not propagated from the dam over 2 km upstream. Also, 2D numerical models of RMA2 and SED2D were used to predict bed changes in the upstream area with and without sediment release openings. Consequently, it is presented that sediment release openings decreased maximum deposition height in the upstream channel of the dam.

  • Flow field-flow fractionation (Fl-FFF) device has been widely used to verify the size and molecular weight of various colloids and organics. The Fl-FFF, however, generally uses carrier solutions with only low to moderate ionic strengths to exclude the high affinity of materials to the membrane under high ionic strength conditions. Thus, materials existing in seawaters have not been accurately analysed based on the hydrodynamic size and molecular weight using current Fl-FFF techniques. The highest ionic strength tested was up to 0.1 M, while seawater ionic strength is about 0.6 M. The aim of this study is to accurately measure the hydrodynamic size of particles under carrier solutions close to seawater conditions with the Fl-FFF. By employing various operating conditions during the Fl-FFF analyses, it was demonstrated that the flow conditions, the concentration of surfactants, and stabilization times were key factors in acquiring compatible data. Results have shown that the cross flow was more influential factor than the channel flow. The concentration of the surfactant was to be at least 0.05% and the minimum 15 hr of stabilization was needed for accurate and reproducible data acquisition under seawater condition.

  • Turbulent jet flow has been studied in many ways; a plane jet, a rectangular jet, an annular jet, a round jet, a wall jet, a parallel jet, a valve jet, a cross jet, a slit jet and etc. In this report, a 45.deg. cross jet flow was tried by using two same dimensioned nozzels(dia..phi.20)which were set up at the exit of the subsonic wind tunnel. Each jet flows to the direction of 22.5.deg. to the axis of downstream of the mixed flow. The centerline of each jet meets at the distance of 217.3mm and their mixing flow could be imagined to develop beyond that distance, so the measurement was effectuated at X/X$_{0}$=1.2-1.5. The section of the mixed flow a elliptic circle which is formed by the 22.5.deg. inclined flows to the X direction. This experimental study aimed at the investigation of the turbulent mixing process of two jets; the mean velocities, the turbulent shear stresses, the correlation coefficients, and the momentum were respectively measured. The mean velocity distribution profiles of the down-stream component measured in the Y direction coincide well with the empirical equation of Gortler and those measured in the Z direction agree with the equation of H. Schlichting. Other mean velocities V over bar and W over bar components were randomly distributed. The higher values with same order of the intensity of turbulence were largely distributed at the central part of the flow. The momentum was decreased up to 70% by the shock losses and the development of intense turbulences, but it kept its value constantly beyond X/d=14. Two-channel hot-wire anemometer systems (model 1050 series), X-type hot-wire made of tungsten (dia. .phi.e.mu.m, long 3mm, model 0252 T5), a computer(model HP 9845B0, and a plotter (model HP 9872C) were used for the experiments and the analyses.s.

  • The next generation wireless communication systems are required high BER performance better than present performance. Double binary Turbo code have error floor at high SNR, so it cannot be used in next generation wireless communication system. Therefore, many methods are proposed for overcome error floor at DVB-RCS NG(next generation). In this paper, we analysis structure of third-dimension Turbo code(3D-turbo code). 3D-Turbo code overcomes error flow by additive post-encoder in conventional DVB-RCS Turbo code. Performance of 3D-Turbo code is changed by post-encoder form, interleaving method, value of ${\lambda}$. So we are simulated by those parameter and proposed optimal form. By a result, performance of 3D-Turbo is better than conventional DVB-RCS Turbo code and it overcome error floor of conventional DVB-RCS Turbo code.

  • Bars in a river bed show the flow of the river, the shape of a river bar can be easily measured in any river. The purpose of this study is to research the morphological characteristics of river bars. The case study area is the lower Golgi River, six bars were examined. All six bars are gravel bars with a grain size in excess of 2 millimeters. Four of the bars are longitudinal bars, in which the direction of the bar follows the river current. After analyzing the gravel in the bars, it was determined that as the gravel flows down the river, gravel grain size decreases while grain roundness increases. The shape of bar varies locally according to flow regime, channel slope, and w/d ratio.

  • This work was devoted to compare two different cavitation models to study the dependency of model constants. The cavitation model of Merkle et al.(2006) and Kunz et al.(2000) were used for the present computational study. The cavitation models were coupled with the incompressible unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver to indicate the vaporization and condensation processes. For this purpose, a preconditioning method was added as the pseudo-time term to solve the unsteady stiffness problems. For the validation of the numerical simulation, the computation was performed for the cavitating flow in a converging-diverging channel. The present results show that Merkle's cavitation model is independent to the model constants, and the higher numerical accuracy over Kunz's cavitation model.

  • The mixing effect is studied by comparing rotating and oscillating stirrers in the micro channel. The cases of Re=10 to 80 with various stirring speeds are considered to analysis the effect of Re and stirrer speed for the mixing. Under Re=20, the oscillating stirrer represents better mixing rate than the rotating stirrer up to the critical stirrer speed which has a maximum efficiency. Over Re=30, the results of oscillating and rotating stirrer show that the faster the stirrer speed, the higher the mixing effect within the concerned stirrer speed range and the oscillating stirrer keeps the higher mixing rate. It was found that the mixing effect is a function which has an optimum of the Reynolds number and the stirrer speed. The D2Q9 Lattice Boltzmann Method is used due to the merits of calculation for the unsteady flow with moving boundary.
