In this paper, we propose a control algorithm for two-wheel mobile robot that can move the rider to his or her command and autonomously keep its balance. The control algorithm is based on a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control scheme. In this control problem the main issue is to move the rider while keeping its balance in the presence of disturbances and parameter uncertainties. The disturbance force caused by uneven road surfaces and the uncertainty due to different rider's heights are considered. To this end we first consider a state feedback controller as a basic framework. Secondly, we obtain the state feedback gain $K_2$ minimizing the $H_2$ norm and the state feedback gain $K_{\infty}$ minimizing the $H_{\infty}$ norm over the whole range of parameter uncertainty. Finally, we select mixed $H_2$/$H_{\infty}$ state feedback controller K as the geometric mean of $K_2$ and $K_{\infty}$. Simulation results show that the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ state feedback controller combines the effects of the optimal $H_2$ state feedback controller and robust $H_{\infty}$ controller state feedback controller efficiently in the presence of disturbance and parameter uncertainty.

In this study, a position control algorithm for an omni-directional mobile robot based on Mecanum wheels was introduced and experimentally evaluated. Multiple ultrasonic sensors were installed around the mobile robot to obtain position feedback. Using the distance of the robot from the wall, the position and orientation of the mobile robot were calculated. In accordance with the omni-directional velocity generation mechanism, the velocity kinematics between the Mecanum wheel and the mobile platform were determined. Based on this formulation, a simple and intuitive position control algorithm was suggested. To evaluate the control algorithm, a test bed composed of artificial walls was designed and implemented. While conventional control algorithms based on normal wheels require additional path planning for two-dimensional planar motion, the omni-directional mobile robot using distance sensors was able to directly follow target positions with the simple proposed position feedback algorithm.

A two-wheel balancing vehicle, which helps people moving freely and fast, and is applied from inverted pendulum system, has been widely researched and developed, and some products are came into a market in actuality. Until now, the two-wheel balancing vehicles developed have chosen the general PID control method. In this paper, we propose a new control method to improve a control capacity for a two-wheeled balancing vehicle for human transportation. The proposed method is the fuzzy PD+I control that is one of the improved PID control, and it contains a 2input-1output fuzzy system. This fuzzy system processes signals from proportional and derivative controller, and the fuzzy output signal generates the final output by summing up integral signal. The non-linearity of the fuzzy system makes an optimal output control signal by changing weight of the proportional signal and the derivative signal in process of time. We have simulated the fuzzy PD+I control system and experimented by implementing the two-wheel balancing mobile robot to verify the advantages of the proposed fuzzy PD+I control method in comparison with general PID control. As the results of simulation and experimentation, the proposed fuzzy PD+I control method has better control performance than general PID in this system and improves it.

Small mobile robots which use round wheels are suitable for driving on a flat surface, but it cannot climb the obstacle whose height is greater than the radius of wheels. As an alternative, legged-wheels have been proposed by many researchers due to its better climbing performance. However, driving and climbing performances have a trade-off relationship so that their driving performance should be sacrificed. In this study, in order to achieve both driving and climbing performances, a new transformable wheel was developed. The developed transformable wheel can have a round shape on a flat surface and change its shape into legged-wheel when it makes a contact with an obstacle. For design of the transformable wheel, the performance of legged-wheel was analyzed with respect to the number and curvature of the leg, and then the new transformable wheel was designed based on the analysis. Contrary to the existing transformable wheels that contain additional actuators for the transformation, the developed transformable wheel can be unfolded without any additional actuator. In this study, in order to validate the transformable wheel, a simple robot platform was fabricated. Consequently, it climbed the obstacle whose height is 2.6 times greater than the wheel radius.

Traditional automobile or 2-wheeled robot have limitations on mobility because of their mechanical structure. As traditional automobile is being replaced by electric cars, robot technology is applied to the car industry. In robotics, many researchers worked on omnidirectional mobile robot and produced lots of noticeable results. However in many of the results, specialized wheels such as Mecanum wheels are required. That imposes restrictions on robot speed and outdoor driving. We proposed a 2-wheeled modular robot that has omnidirectional mobility without using specialized wheels. In this paper, we propose a 4-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot that consists of those two modular robots. The proposed robot adopts electric brakes to combine wheel housings and the robot body or to separate wheel housings from the robot body. Two absolute-type encoders and four incremental encoders are used to control the position of the wheel housing and velocities of the wheels. The proposed robot has omnidirectional mobility and can move fast and outdoor with normal tire wheels. We implemented the proposed robot and the feasibility and stability of the robot is verified by two separate experiments.
With growth in intelligence of mobile robots, interaction with humans is emerging as a very important issue for mobile robots and the pedestrian tracking technique following the designated person is adopted in many cases in a way that interacts with humans. Among the existing multi-object tracking techniques for pedestrian tracking, Simple Online and Realtime Tracking (SORT) is suitable for small mobile robots that require real-time processing while having limited computational performance. However, SORT fails to reflect changes in object detection values caused by the movement of the mobile robot, resulting in poor tracking performance. In order to solve this performance degradation, this paper proposes a more stable pedestrian tracking algorithm by correcting object tracking errors caused by robot movement in real time using wheel odometry information of a mobile robot and dynamically managing the survival period of the tracker that tracks the object. In addition, the experimental results show that the proposed methodology using data collected from actual mobile robots maintains real-time and has improved tracking accuracy with resistance to the movement of the mobile robot.

In wartime conditionsmilitary combat vehicles are required to be driven on rough roads that have significant obstacles. A wheel type dog-horse robot with a rotary suspension system was applied to overcome the obstacles. To achieve real-time analysis, a simplified model was proposed by using velocity transformations. Through comparison with the multi-body dynamics model, the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed modeling was proven.

The common requirements of rough terrain mobile robots are long-term operation and high mobility in rough terrain to perform difficult tasks. In rough terrain, excessive wheel slip could cause an increase in the amount of dissipated energy at the contact point between the wheel and ground or, even more seriously, the robot could lose all mobility and become trapped. This paper proposes a traction control algorithm that can be independently implemented to each wheel without requiring extra sensors and devices compared with standard velocity control methods. The proposed traction algorithm is analogous to the stick-slip friction mechanism. The algorithm estimates the slippage of wheels by angular acceleration change, and controls the increase or decrease state of torque applied to wheels Simulations are performed to validate the algorithm. The proposed traction control algorithm yielded a 65.4% reduction of total slip distance and 70.6% reduction of power consumption compared with the standard velocity control method.
In the midst of accelerating wars around the world, unmanned robot technology that can guarantee the safety of human life is emerging. ERP-42 is a modular platform that can be used according to the application. In the field of defense, it can be used for transporting supplies, reconnaissance and surveillance, and medical evacuation in conflict areas. Due to the nature of the military environment, atypical environments are predominant, and in such environments, the platform's path followability is an important part of mission performance. This paper focuses on reducing the minimum turning radius in terms of improving path followability. The minimum turning radius of the existing 2WS/2WD in-wheel platform was reduced by increasing the torque of the independent driving in-wheel motor on the rear wheel to generate oversteer. To determine the degree of oversteer, two GPS were attached to the center of the front and rear wheelbases and measured. A closed-loop speed control method was used to maintain a constant rotational speed of each wheel despite changes in load or torque.

In general, a yawing motion concept is used for the lateral control of one wheel robot where the gimbal system is located horizontally. In this paper, another concept of the vertically located gimbal system is presented for the same purpose. Although the vertical concept undergoes an instability more easily than the horizontal one, the pitching motion of the gyroscopic effect is considered. Firstly, the trade-off relation between two balancing concepts are investigated by comparing the gyroscopic mechanism. Secondly, the dynamic model for the problem of the proposed concept is derived using the oscillatory inverted stick model. Thirdly, the stability of the model is analyzed using the phase trajectory method. Finally, the control performance of the system by a vibration controller is simulated.
