  • This study analyzed how average GPA (grade point average) changes as the number of completed semesters increases based on the estimates of intercept, slope, and quadratic term. The students included in this study are those who was admitted in 2011 and took 6 consecutive semesters. More precisely, it was analyzed if intercept, slope and quadratic term of average GPA were different between gender and selection method. The results showed that the intercept was different between selection method, the slope was different between gender, but the quadratic term was different between neither selection method nor gender.

  • The time simulation of slow drift motions of moored FPSO in waves is presented. The equation of motion based on Cummin's theory of impulse responses are employed, and are consisted of horizontal plane motions such as surge, sway and yaw. The added mass, wave damping coefficients, first order wave exciting forces and the second order wave drift forces involved in the equations are obtained from three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The mooring lines are modeled as quasi-static catenary cable. As a numerical example, time domain analyses are carried out for a box-type FPSO in long crest irregular wave condition.

  • Logistic regression model is one of the most popular linear models for a binary response variable and used for the estimation of probability function. In many practical situations, the probability function can be expressed by a bell shaped curve and such a function can be estimated by a second order logistic regression model. However, when the probability curve is asymmetric, the estimation results using a second order logistic regression model may not be precise because a second order logistic regression model is a symmetric function. In addition, even if a second order logistic regression model is used, the interpretation for the effect of second order term may not be easy. In this paper, in order to alleviate such problems, an estimation method for asymmetric probabiity curve based on a first order logistic regression model and iterative bi-section method is proposed and its performance is compared with that of a second order logistic regression model by a simulation study.

  • This paper presents the extraction scheme of the scattered waves by a target above the ground using the buried antenna in a lossy and dispersive medium. The half wave dipole antennas are used to transmit and to receive a signal. The transmission line model as a feeding model is considered to take into account the effect of transmission line in a real system. The ground is modeled by the 2nd order Debye approximation with the dispersion and loss. PLRC algorithm and DPML as absorbing boundary condition are utilized to apply the 2nd order Debye approximation to FDTD. To extract the scattered wave, in addition, we employed the delay time extraction algorithm. The simulations are conducted to observe the variation of magnitude in scattered wave and detection of target position according to the change of moisture content of the lossy medium.

  • The very large floating structure which can be used for as airport may be as large as several kilometer long and wide. The first order wave forces as well as wave drift forces are very important forces on such a very large floating structures. In the present study, the time simulation of motion responses for dolphin-moored VLFS in waves is presented. The hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces involved in the equations are obtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The horizontal drift forces and mooring forces for dolphin systems are taken into account. As for numerical example, time domain analyses are carried out for a VLFS(Phase I) in irregular wave condition.

  • Wave drift forces which are small in magnitudes compared to the first order wave exciting forces can cause very large motion of a vessel in waves. In this paper a theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the mean and slowly varying wave dirft forces on the semi-submersible platform. Theoretical calculations are performed by using near field method with three dimensional diffraction theory and model tests are carried out in regular and irregular waves with a 1/60 semi model. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations and the mooring spring effects in the test are discussed.

  • This paper presents geometrically nonlinear formulation of shell problems using the three-dimensional curved shell element, which includs large displacements and large rotations. Formulations of the geometrically nonlinear problems can be derived in a variety of ways, but most of them have been obtained by assuming that nodal rotations are small. Hence, the tangent stiffness matrix is derived under the assumptions that rotational increments are infinitesimal and the effect of finite rotational increments have to be considered during the equilibrium iterations. To study the large displacement and large rotation problems, the restrictions are removed and the formulations of the curved shell element including the effect of large rotational increments are developed in this paper. The displacement based finite element method using this improved formulation are applied to the analyses of the geometrically nonlinear behaviors of the single and double curved shells, which are compared with the results by others.

  • The welding-induced initial imperfections such as residual stresses and initial strains in plated structures of ships and offshore structures can be effectively evaluated by the thermal elasto-plastic analysis method proposed in this paper. In the analysis of heat conduction of plate structures, both the analytical method and the numerical method are used. For the thermal elasto-plastic analysis of plates, the finite element analysis is performed, based on the initial strain method. In the plastic domain during incremental process, the 2nd order terms of stress increments and yield stress increments were considered, so that time increment could be controlled for more stable solution. To measure temperature distribution and angular distortion of plates during welding, bead-on-plate experiment are perform with various heat input and plate thickness. Measured data show good agreement with the calculated results.

  • When a ship advancing in waves is subjected to impact forces or irregular forces, the motion analyses for ship are convenient for being calculated in the time domain. The added mass, wave damping coefficients, wave exciting forces and mean drift forces are calculated by 3-Dimensional panel method used the translating pulsating Green function in the frequency domain and the motion equations which are considered by the memory effect due to waves are numerically solved by using the Newmark-$\beta$ method in the time domain. The motion analyses are carried out for a Series 60($C_B=0.7$) moving in irregular waves. The items of calculation are 6-degree motions, accelerations at the fore and after position, numbers of deck wetness and numbers of exposure at ship-bottom, etc. Moreover, the thrust addition in waves is examined by considering the time mean drift forces in the motion equations of time domain.
