  • A new approach of estimating the coefficient of permeability (COP) from resistivity has been developed, which can provide another good application tool of geophysical methods to geo-technical field. Borehole electrical logging and Lugeon test results in Yangsan area showed that resistivity is inversely proportional to the COP. For granite and andesite in Yansan area, the relation between the resistivity ($\rho$) and the COP (k) revealed that, $log(k){\approx}-0.85621\;log({\rho})+0.0031$. Derived relation is applied to AMT data acquired from a survey line along the tunnel. Two-dimensional resistivity distribution from AMT data was converted to two-dimensional COP section. The final COP section can be used as good input data for groundwater modeling.

  • This study has investigated the feasibility of caissons for accelerating consolidation (C.A.C.) constructed in clays with anisotropic permeability by improving the former study on C.A.C. in isotropic clays. Analytical solutions for excessive pore water pressures of two-dimensional consolidation equation and average degrees of consolidation with varying time factors have been provided by considering anisotropic permeability. With varying anisotropic permeability ratios of 5, 10, and 50, consolidation times required for reaching the average degree of consolidation of 90% for C.A.C. at the section of $\xi$=0.1 are shorter than those for conventional caissons by 8, 13, and 47 times, respectively. C.A.C. is more effective in reducing consolidation time as anisotropic permeability ratio increases. This study provides also plots for average degrees of consolidation versus the width to depth ratios of analyzed sections and permeability ratios, which will enable engineers to determine easily average consolidation settlements.

  • This research is focused on the seepage behavior of embankment which had the weak zone with big permeability. The distributed TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) and point sensors such as settlement gauge, pore water pressuremeter, vertical total stressmeter, and FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometer) sensor were used to measure the seepage characteristics and embankment behavior. Also, the measured data were compared to the data of 2-D and 3-D numerical analysis. The dimension of model embankment was 7 m length, 5 m width and 1.5 m height, which is composed of fine-grained sands and the water level of embankment was 1.3 m height. The seepage behavior of measuring and numerical analysis were very similar, it means that the proper sensing system can monitor the real-time safety of embankment. The result by 2-D and 3-D numerical analysis showed similar saturation processing, however in case of weak zone, the phreatic lines of 2-D showed faster movement than that of 3-D analysis, and finally they converged.

  • Seepage rate through the core zone of rockfill dam, estimated from graphical technique and the equation by Sakamoto (1998), is different from the real condition because of neglecting unsaturated flow. With existing method to estimate total seepage rate, it is difficult to understand the tendency of total seepage rate changes by reservoir water level change. Steady state seepage rate and the factors affecting the time needed to attain to changes of reservoir water level and saturated hydraulic conductivity and unsaturated hydraulic properties of core material are analysed thorough the 2-D steady and unsteady state seepage analyses of Soyanggang dam. Numerical results revealed that the seepage rate can be expressed by the linear equation form and the value of unsaturated soil parameter n is the most important factor affecting the seepage rate and the time needed to attain steady state. The estimation method presented in this study can be used by the designer and the personnel of dam safety for convenient estimation of seepage rate and quantitative analysis of measured seepage rate without 2-D and 3-D numerical analyses.
