  • Two-lane roads that occupy more than a half of rural highways in Korea have operational problems such as traffic congestion problems due to relatively high traffic volume and safety problems due to overtaking risks in two-lane highways. To solve these problems, a 2+1 road pattern that enables to improve traffic safety and operational efficiency of two-lane highways has been applied in Europe. In this study, in-depth applicability of 2+1 roads to Korean rural highways was investigated based on review results of the successful experience of European 2+1 roads. Then, given the Korean two-lane highway conditions, the service traffic volumes for Korean 2+1 roads was estimated. The analysis results showed that 17,000 veh./day might be the maximum traffic volumes for Korean 2+1 roads.

  • The key characteristics of two-lane-and-two-way traffic flow are platoon and overtaking caused by low-speed vehicle such as truck. In order to develop two-way traffic flow model comprised of CF(car-following) and overtaking model, it is essential to develop a car-following model which is suitable to two-way traffic flow. Short distance between vehicles is caused when a high-speed vehicle tailgates and overtakes foregoing low-speed vehicle on two-way road system. And a vehicle following low-speed vehicle decides to overtake the front low-speed vehicle using suitable space within the headway distribution of opposite traffic flow. For this reason, a two-way CF model should describes not only running within short gap but also headway distribution. Additionally considering domestic two-way-road size, there is a on-going need for large-network simulation, but there are few studies for two-way CF model. In this paper, a two-way CA model is developed, which explains two-way CF behavior more realistic and can be applied for large road network. The experimental results show that the developed model mimics stop-and-go phenomenon, one of features of congested traffic flow, and efficiently generates the distribution of headway. When the CF model is integrated with overtaking model, it is, therefore, expected that two-way traffic flow can be explained more realistically than before.

  • Rapid urbanization causes a variety of transportation problems, including traffic delay. Then transportation engineers would get involved in trying to solve traffic delay through road constructed and uncongested policy. But lately, traffic policy changed from vehicle-dominated to humandominated and green transportation. Road diet is one of green transportation. Road diets reduce the number of lanes, lane width because supplement space for green transportation including a bicycle road, side-walk, etc. A study on road diets not enough then this study performed a basic study for road diets. This study on lane width reduce for road diets through analyzes sway of moving vehicle. This study results shows lane width of a compacts-size car needs 2.34~2.70m and lane width of a full-size car needs 2.62~2.89m. According to this study lane width can reduce therefore lane width design criterion have to be relieved. This study will be used in a road width reduce including a road diets, road in process of construction and so on.

  • The research was conducted to investigate the characteristics of lateral wheel path distributions (wandering) in different traffic lanes. The lateral wheel path distributions may affect pavement life and various distress types. The results presented that the normal distribution curve with symmetry was observed in the 2-lane and 3-lane roads. In the case of the 2-lane road (on one direction), the wanderings were 70-95cm, and 70-85cm for the 1st and 2nd lanes, respectively, while in the case of the 3-lane road (on one direction), 50-60cm, 65-85cm, and 80-95cm for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lanes, respectively. In addition, the 1st lane vehicles tended to pass on the right side to avoid the opposite side vehicles, while the outside lane vehicles tended to pass on the left side to avoid the walkway.

  • Two measures of similarity between contours, the 1 st-order similarity measure and the 2nd-order similarity measure are proposed. They are based on the residual errors of the least squares fit. In particular, the 2nd-order similarity measure has a good reliability with respect to contours of many variations such as imperfection, affine transform or combination of these properties. By taking experiments of aircraft identification and recognition we show that in the matching performance the 2nd -order similarity measure is superior not only to the 1 st-order similarity measure but also to the previous matching techniques.

  • The purpose of this study is deriving proper plan which is improving functionality of three-way intersection in two-way road by using shoulder. Alternatives of this study were considered as installation of yield lane and application of TWLTLs (Two-Way Left-Turn Lanes). Case studies to utilize alternatives were limited to national and local roadways which is wider than 11 meters due to be required 3 lanes. Under various traffic conditions such as traffic volume of each direction and left-turn, alternatives were analyzed by simulation. As a results, application of TWLTLs was better than installation of yield lane in terms of improving rate (8.0% vs. 3.7%). Application of TWLTLs is supposed to better alternative, however enough driver education is required to improving safety because it is different with existing driving pattern and/or behaviors. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed by on-site inspections.

  • Two-lane and two-way traffic flow shows various dynamic relationships according to the behaviors of low-speed vehicle and overtaking. And it is essential to develop a vehicle model which simultaneously explains the behaviors of low-speed vehicle and overtaking using opposite lane in order to microscopically analyze various two-lane and two-way traffic flows by traffic flow simulation. In Korea, some studies for car-following and lane-changing models for freeway or signalized road have been reported, but few researches for the development of vehicle model for two-lane and two-way highway have been done. Hence, a microscopic two-lane and two-way vehicle model was, in this study, developed with the consideration of overtaking process and is based on CA (Cellular Automata) which is one of discrete time-space models. The developed model is parallel combined with an adjusted CA car-following model and an overtaking model. The results of experimental simulation showed that the car-following model explained the various macroscopic relationships of traffic flow and overtaking model reasonably generated the various behaviors of macroscopic traffic flows under the conditions of both opposite traffic flow and stochastic parameter to consider overtaking. The vehicle model presented in this study is expected to be used for the simulation of more various two-lane, two-way traffic flows.
