  • The two characteristics of two-lane-and-two-way traffic flow are platoon and overtaking triggered by low-speed vehicle. It is crucial to develop a robust model which simultaneously generates the behaviors of platoon by low-speed vehicle and overtaking using opposite lane. Hence, a microscopic two-lane and two-way vehicle model was introduced (B. Yoon, 2011), which is based on CA (Cellular Automata) which is one of discrete time-space models, in Korea. While the model very reasonably explains the behaviour of overtaking low-speed vehicle in stable traffic flow below critical density, it has shortcomings to the overtaking process in unstable traffic flow above the critical density. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develope a vehicle model to more realistically explain overtaking process in unstable traffic flow state based on the model developed in the previous study. The experimental results revealed that the car-following model robustly generates the various macroscopic relationships of traffic flow generating stop-and-go traffic flow and the overtaking model reasonably explains the behaviors of overtaking under the conditions of both opposite traffic flow and stochastic parameter to consider overtaking in unstable traffic flow state. The vehicle model presented in this study can be expected to be utilized for the analysis of two-lane-and-two-way traffic flows more realistically than before.

  • Traffic condition monitoring system serves as the foundation for all intelligent transportation system operation. Loop detectors and Video Image Processing are the most widely common technology approach to condition monitoring in korea Highways. Lane Usage is defined as the proportion of total link volume served by each lane. In this research, the lane Usage(LU) of two lane link for one day. Interval is 56% : 44%. The LU of three lane link is 39% : 37% : 24%. The LU of four lane link is 25% : 29% : 26% : 21%. These analysis reveal that each lane distributions of link are not same. This research investigates the general concept of lane usage by using collected loop detector data and the investigated that lane distribution is different by traffic lane and lane usage is consistent by time of day.

  • This study presented an algorithm to detect zigzag driving maneuver that is highly associated with vehicle crash occurrence. In general, the zigzag driving results from the driver's inattention including drowsy driving and driving while intoxicated. Therefore, the technology to detect such unsafe driving maneuver will provide us with a valuable opportunity to prevent crash in the road. The proposed detection algorithm used angular velocity data obtained from a gyro sensor. Performance evaluations of the algorithm presented promising results for the actual implementation in practice. The outcome of this study can be used as novel information contents under the ubiquitous transportation systems environment.

  • To make popular the NEV(Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) uses, it must be considered the supply of infrastructure and the political decision for NEV. However, the guidelines of infrastructure for NEV are not prepared. The guidelines of infrastructure for NEV should be performed in many research and case. The purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of NEV on the two-lane highway traffic flows by TWOPAS simulation model. The main items to check the influence are Average Travel speed, Percent Time Spent Following and Total Delay. The scenario were setup by traffic volume. And the NEV percentages are changed from 1% ~ 30%. The scenario 1 which traffic volume are 650veh/h and the scenario 4 which traffic volume are 2,600veh/h are less influenced by NEV, compare to scenario 2, scenario 3. Because the scenario 1 is more free to make passing other cars and Scenario 4 is fully saturated with existing traffic volumes. The urban two-lane highway which has much traffic volume and the rural two-lane highway which has little traffic volume has affinity for NEV than the other two-lane highway.

  • Interchanges are passages for vehicle and pedestrians and a gateway to nearby facilities, and a place to stay of vehicle and Pedestrians. Interchange traffic must be able to navigate well for safety and convenience. Traffic safety and efficiency are influenced by the interchange. In this study, relative delays of vehicles are compared by changing traffic interchanges. the volume of traffic, the number of lanes, the rate of left turns vehicle on the interchanges of urban arterial roads. The object of this study is to compare Grade crossing interchange, Diamond interchange. Roundabout interchange. SPUI(Single Point Urban Interchange), Echelon interchange). Echelon interchange. By VISSIM Simulation, this study drew the relative delay value of every scenario and compared the delay value of each vehicle considering construction expenses. Through this comparison study, ideal interchange is dependent on the volume of traffic, the number of lanes, and the rate of left turns.

  • The probe vehicle penetration rate is a required parameter in the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length from probe vehicle data. The previous studies have proposed estimation methods without point detectors, which are based on probability structures for the locations of probe and non-probe vehicles; however, such methods are poorly suited to the case of multi-lane streets. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the probe vehicle penetration rate at a multi-lane intersection and introduce a probability distribution of the queue length of each lane. Although a gap between estimates and observations was found, the estimates followed the trend of observations; the estimation could be improved by the correction factor hereafter. This study is expected to be used as a basic study for the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length at multi-lane intersections without point detectors.

  • In this paper, we propose a method predicting the speed of each lane from the link speed using a neural network. We took three measures for configuring learning data to increase prediction accuracy. The first one is to expand the spatial range of the data source by including 14 links connected to the beginning and end points of the link. We also increased the time interval from 07:00 to 22:00 and included the data generation time in the feature data. Finally, we marked weekdays and holidays. Results of experiments showed that the speed error was reduced by 21.9% from 6.4 km/h to 5.0 km/h for straight lane, by 12.9% from 8.5 km/h to 7.4 km/h for right turns, and by 5.7% from 8.7 km/h to 8.2 km/h for left-turns. As a secondary result, we confirmed that the prediction accuracy of each lane was high for city roads when the traffic flow was congested. The feature of the proposed method is that it predicts traffic conditions for each lane improving the accuracy of prediction.

  • The Purpose of this Paper was to revise the method of USHCM and to establish new method for level of service analysis on two-lane rural highways. For this Purpose, total delay rate was selected as new MOE for level of service, replacing the present Percent time delay. This result showed that total delay rate was more effective for considering the effects of traffic flows, auxiliary lane, and vertical tirade. The application of total delay rate could resolve the Problems in the USHCM method, such as too wide ranges for level of service D and E, and the use of different Procedures for level of service analysis of general terrain segment and specific grade Procedures. The research results are as follows First, a new method for level of service analysis on two-lane rural highways was developed using the total delay rate. Second, a new classification for level of service was developed and a consistent method applicable for general terrain segment and specific tirade Procedures was developed. Third, the desired speed on two-lane rural highways was determined as 85km/h.

  • This research focuses on the warrants for the Two-Way Left-Turn Lanes (TWLTL). Using a microscopic traffic simulation tool, two key parameters were investigated herewith. One is a wide range of the Design Hourly Volume (DHV), reflective of recent Korean roadway volume characteristics, that is conventionally reduced from the Average Daily Traffic (ADT). The other is driveway spacing, the length of the middle-lane section where two conflicting left-turn demands often compete for space. In addition, unlike previous researches, the way and the procedure the TWLTL operation is realized in the VISSIM S/W with its add-on application such as VISVAP is clearly stated and described in detail. According to the result of simulations for 10 volume scenarios, as expected, the higher the volume level is, the more delay the left-tuner experience. The Level Of Service (LOS) for most cases was in the range of C and D based on the non-signalized intersection LOS criteria. Furthermore, the TWLTL was found operable up to the volume level of 1,116 and 1,860 vph in heavy direction (equivalent of volume level 7) for 3-lane and 5-lane facility respectively, which covers significant portion of existing two to four-lane highway volumes in Korea.
