  • Purpose: The Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) is a widely used prognostic tool in patients with advanced cancer. This study examines the association between changes in PPS score and survival in patients with advanced cancer. Methods: We identified a cohort of 606 inpatients who died at a Korean university hospital's hospice/palliative care center. For each patient, the PPS score was measured twice according to a standard procedure: 1) upon admission, and 2) three days after admission (D3). "Change on D3" was defined as a difference between initial PPS and PPS on D3. We used a Cox regression modeling approach to explore the association between this score change and survival. Results: The changes in scores were associated with survival. A score change of >30% yielded a hazard ratio for death of 2.66 (95% CI 2.19~3.22), compared to a score change of ${\leq}30%$. PPS of ${\leq}30$ on D3 also independently predicted survival, with a hazard ratio of 1.67 (95% CI 1.38~2.02) compared to PPS of >30. Conclusion: A change of over 30% in PPS appears to predict survival in hospitalized patients with terminal cancer, even after adjustment for confounders. Changes in PPS may be a more sensitive indicator of impending death than a single PPS measured on the day of admission in terminal cancer patients. Further prospective study is needed to examine this important finding in other populations.

  • Purpose: The process of the proton treatment is done by comparing the DRR and DIPS anatomic structure to find the correction factor and use the PPS to use this factor in the treatment. For the accuracy of the patient set up, the PPS uses a 6 axis system to move. Therefore, there needs to be an evaluation for the accuracy between the PPS moving materialization and DIPS correction factor. In order to do this, we will use a self made PPS QA Phantom to measure the accuracy of the PPS. Materials and Methods: We set up a PPS QA Phantom at the center to which a lead marker is attached, which will act instead of the patient anatomic structure. We will use random values to create the 6 axis motions and move the PPS QA Phantom. Then we attain a DIPS image and compare with the DRR image in order to evaluate the accuracy of the correction factor. Results: The average correction factor, after moving the PPS QA Phantom's X, Y, Z axis coordinates together from 1~5 cm, 1 cm at a time, and coming back to the center, are 0.04 cm, 0.026 cm, 0.022 cm, $0.22^{\circ}$, $0.24^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$ on the PPS 6 axis. The average correction rate when moving the 6way movement coordinates all from 1 to 2 were 0.06 cm, 0.01 cm, 0.02 cm, $0.1^{\circ}$, $0.3^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$ when moved 1 and 0.02 cm, 0.04 cm, 0.01 cm, $0.3^{\circ}$, $0.5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$ when moved 2. Conclusion: After evaluating the correction rates when they come back to the center, we could tell that the Lateral, Longitudinal, Vertical were all in the acceptable scope of 0.5 cm and Rotation, Pitch, Roll were all in the acceptable scope of $1^{\circ}$. Still, for a more accurate proton therapy treatment, we must try to further enhance the image of the DIPS matching system, and exercise regular QA on the equipment to reduce the current rate of mechanical errors.

  • Purpose: The purposes of the study were 1) to examine what relationships exist between PTE(perceived treatments effect) and PPS (perceived physical suffering) as the independent variables and hope as the dependent variable and 2) to examine whether PTE and PPS predict hope in cancer patients in their post-operative period within the Stotland's hope theory. Method: The Visual Analog Scale was used for measuring PTE and PPS and the Kim & Lee's Hope Scale which had acceptable reliability and validity was used for measuring hope. The data was collected from 38 hospitalized cancer patients who were in the post-operative period with a convenient sampling method. Result: There was a significant positive relationship between hope and the PTE in the low PTE group. There was a significant negative relationship between hope and the PPS in the low PPS group. There were no significant relationships between hope and the PTE in the high PTE group, and between hope and the PPS in the high PPS group. And the PTE explained hope with 71.2% of the variance in the low PTE group. Conclusion: PTE in the low PTE group and PPS in the low PPS group were identified as the factors to explain hope.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Nd:YAG laser and the Er:YAAG laser on etching enamel for direct bonding of orthodontic bracket. The advantages of laser etching rather than conventional acid etching are to reduce the subsurface demineralization rate, to inhibit the spillage of acid onto uninvolved ""its of enamel, and to save the clinical manipulation time involving drying, trashing and drying again. 189 freshly extracted human premolars were prepared for this research. 165 out of them were divided into 11 groups of 15 teeth. One group was acid etching and the rest groups were irradiated with Nd:YAG laser by four different energy levels(100mj 10pps, 100mj 20pps, 150mj 20pps, 200mj 20pps) and with Er:YAG laser by six different energy levels(60mj 5pps, 60mj 10pps, 100mj 10pps. 200mj 10pps, 200mj l5pps, 400mj 10pps). Shear bond strength was tested with Instron after 24 hours, one week, and three weeks. Twenty-four out of 189 teeth were divided into twelve groups untreated control, acid etching, and ten laser irradiation subgroups. And the ultrastructural enamel surfaces of each group were observed with scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The means and the standard deviations of shear bond strength of Nd:YAG and Er:YAU laser irradiation by different energy levels were obtained. 2. Shear bond strengths of Er:YAG laser irradiation groups were higher than those of Nd:YAG laser irradiation groups at the identical energy level. 3. Maximum bond strengths was achieved at the energy of I50mj, 20pps in Nd:YAG laser irradiation groups or 60mj, 10pps in Er:YAG laser irradiation groups. 4. It was acceptible for direct bonding to irradiate lb0mj 20pps with Nd:YAG laser or to irradiate 60mj 10pps with Er:YAG laser considering the results of shear bond strength tests and SEM obsesvation.

  • Recently, time synchronous has become important for satellite launch control facilities, multiple thermal power plants, and power system facilities. Information from time synchronous at each of these industrial sites requires time synchronization to control or monitor the system with correlation. In this paper, IRIG-B codes, which can be used for time synchronous, are used as specifications in IRIG standard 200-16. Signals from IRIG-B120 (Analog), IRIG-B000 (Digital), and one PPS are output from GPS receiver. Using the signal from IRIG-B120 (Analog), it passes through the signal from the analog amplifier and generates one PPS signal using the field-programmable gate array. The FPGA is used cyclone EPM570T100I5N. According to IEEE regulations, the error of one PPS is specified within 1us, but in this paper, the error is within 100ns. The output of the one PPS signal was then compared and tested against the one PPS signal on the GPS receiver to verify accuracy and reliability. In addition, the proposed time synchronous is simple to construct and structure, easy to implement, and provides high time precision compared to typical time synchronous. The output of the one PPS signals and IRIG-B000 signal will be used in many industry sectors.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the possibility of utilizing LX-PPS GNSS permanent stations whose antennas are installed on the building rooftop for the purpose of high-precision GNSS positioning services. We picked 15 pairs of adjacent GNSS permanent stations operated by LX-PPS and NGII, and then produced 3-year-long time series using the high-precision data processing software called GIPSY. Patterns and trends of position estimates were compared and analyzed. Horizontal and vertical deviations including the linear velocities coincide with the well-known crustal deformation rates of the Korean peninsula. We also observed almost the same annual or seasonal patterns from those nearby sites. After detrending the linear velocity, the amplitude and phase of annual signals almost perfectly match each other within the baseline length of 2 km. By subtracting seasonal signals, the RMS and standard deviations in LX-PPS PPGR with respect to NGII KANR are about 1, 2, and 5 mm in the north-south, east-west, and vertical directions, respectively. From this analysis it can be concluded that the rooftop-installed LX-PPS sites show similar level of stability and positioning performance comparable to those ground-mounted NGII stations.

  • To improve the antimicrobial activity and crease resistance of Korean traditional Hansan ramie fabrics, partially saponified polyethylene(PPS) was used as a softening water repellent agent and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl dimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride(QAC) as a antimicrobial agent. The antimicrobial activity was effective by treatments of PPS, QAC and PPS/QAC for shake flask test. For the halo test, PPS/QAC showed good antimicrobial activity. It was found that the desirable composition of H$_{2}$O/PPS/QAC is 98/1/1 for improving the antimicrobial activity and crease resistance of the fabrics.

  • In this study, the PPS/ABS blend system was investigated in order to identify the relationship between the incorporation of compatabilizing moieties and the mechanical properties. ABS resin was chemically modified by the incorporation of maleic anhydride using reactive extrusion method to yield MABS resin, and PPS/MABS blend was prepared by a twin screw extruder. Single glass transition behavior was observed in the various compositions of PPS/MABS blend by dynamic mechanical analysis study. Upon the examination of the mechanical properties, the PPS/MABS blend exhibited an enhanced tensile, flexural and impact strength, which might be due to the better chemical compatibilization to result in the reduced interfacial tension between each components.

  • The role of transfer films formed during sliding of polymer composites against steel counterfaces was studied in terms of the tribological behaviors of composites. Four kinds of composites were included in this study: (1) unfilled PPS, (2) PPS+2%CuO, (3) PPS+2%CuO+5% carbon fiber (CF), and (4) PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar. The filler material CuO was in nanoscale particulate form and the reinforcing material was in the form of short fibers. The composites were prepared by compression molding at $310^{\circ}C$ and sliding tests were run in the pin-on-disk sliding configuration. The counterface was made of tool steel hardened to 55-60 HRC and finished to a surface roughness of 0.09-0.10 ${\mu}m$ Ra. Wear tests were run for 6 hrs at the sliding speed of 1 m/s and contact pressure of 0.65 MPa. Transfer films formed on the counterfaces during sliding were investigated using AFM and SEM. The results showed that as the transfer film became smooth and uniform, wear rate decreased. PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar composite showed the lowest steady state wear rate in this study and its transfer film showed the smoothest and the most uniform characteristics. The examination of worn surfaces of PPS+2%CuO composite using X-ray area scanning (dot mapping) showed back-transfer of steel counterface material to the polymer pin surface. This behavior is believed to strengthen the polymer pin surface during sliding thereby contributing to the decrease in wear rate.

  • The effect of compatibilizer types on the properties of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)/polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blends was investigated. The blends were extruded by a single screw extruder attached with a Maddock mixing zone and their molded properties were examined. As a basic blend composition, a linear PPS/PET (40/60) blend was selected based on cost efficiency. Three types of compatibilizer, SEBS, modified SEBS, and modified PS were added to the basic blend to improve the properties. The thermal, rheological, mechanical properties and the morphology of the ternary blends were analyzed. The maximum mechanical properties of blends was found at 1 phr of m-SEBS or m-PS content, whose values were almost the same as the theoretical values of miscible blend system. It seemed to by the case that the partial reaction between compatibilizer and the basic blend caused the enhancement of compatibility between linear PPS and PET phases. These ternary blends would be applicable as economic linear PPS alloys.
