Current Status of the Occurrence of the Insect Pests in the Citrus Orchard in Cheju Island (감귤해충의 최근 발생 동향)

  • As the pest of the citrus in Cheju, 69 insect species and 5 animal species were investigated during 1996 to 1998. Of these, Panonychus citri, Phyllocnistis citrella, Aphis citricola, Aphis gossypii and Frankliniella occidentalis are major pests. Especially, F. occidentalis and Peridroma saucia are very important species because of increasing damage. The number of pests species injuring leaf, branch, fruit and flower of the citrus are 36, 16, 41 and 2 species respectively. The rate of damaged fruits by pests is 20.5% in 1997 and 18.6% in 1998 and the rate of bad quality fruits is 6.4% and 6.7% respectively.

A Study on Regional Irradiation Dose of Radiological Technologists (방사선사의 지역별 피폭선량에 관한 연구)

  • This research is to measure the irradiation dose in radiological technologists with 623 radiological technologists working at 44 general hospitals in 16 cities and states nation-wide, during one month from July to August 2003. Questionnaires were used to analyze the dose, while existing data from measurements taken in 5 years was used to analyze amounts of radiation dose level. Average annual irradiation dose level was $1.73{\pm}0.10mSv$ in 5 years from 1998 to 2002. Annually, 2000 had the highest level With $1.80{\pm}0.15mSv$, While 1998 was lowest with $1.36{\pm}0.12mSv$, but a long-term solution needs to be worked out since there is a possibility of chronic exposure due to the nature of the work. The results of present research shows that the radiological technologists are effecting managing irradiation dose.

  • 강화지역의 경우 40년 미만의 관측기록으로 1998년 8월 6일부터 8월 7일까지 발생했던 24시간 최대강우의 경우 619.5mm로써 기상청에서 관측한 이래 8월의 강우 중 최고치를 기록하고 있고, 과거 강우빈도에 적용할 경우 최소 200년 이상의 빈도를 나타내게 되어 확률강우량 산정시 이에 대한 검토가 있어야 한다. 강화지역 확률강우량 산정을 위하여 지속년도별 지속시간에 따른 최대발생 강우량을 산정하였을 때, 100년 빈도 확률강우량 산정시 1998년의 강우가 100년 빈도 이상의 강우로 판단되며, 이상강우를 기각하였을 경우 100년 빈도 24시간 일 경우 확률강우량이 약 24% 감소되는 것으로 나타남에 따라 이상강우의 처리를 단순히 포함하는 방안보다 기각여부 조건을 설정하여 수공구조물의 과다설계를 방지하고 합리적인 설계 방안을 제시하는 것이 바람직하다.

Troposhperic Ozone Pollutions in Korea during 1998-2002 Using Two Ozone Indices for Vegetation Protection (식생보호를 위한 한계농도 누적 지표로 본 1998-2002년도의 우리나라 대기권 오존 오염)

  • Tropospheric ozone data in Korea for 1998-2002 were analyzed to assess the impact on vegetation. SUM06(sum of hourly concentrations at or above 0.06 ppm) and AOT40(accumulated exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb), widely used as ozone indices in the U.S. and Europe, were calculated based on hourly ozone concentration in 612 areas during 1998-2002 in Korea. SUM06 of the highest 30 areas were 5-12 ppm/hr which were almost the same levels of the U.S. average, and a crop loss of 5% would be expected. Ozone pollution in Seoul during 1998-2002 had decreased compared to that for 1990-97 except in the Northern area; however, ozone pollution in Kyunggi during 1998-2002 had been increased twice compare to the previous 5 years. Korea was divided into four regions: Seoul Metropolitan area, Jungbu, Honam, and Youngnam. Ozone pollution in the Seoul Metropolitan area was much higher during 1998-2000 than the other areas, but ozone pollution during 2001-2002 was almost the same in all four regions. Chunnam-Kwangyang na Kyungbuk-Gumi, famous industrial complexes in southern Korea, were significant ozone pollution areas. However, other industrial complexes, such as Incheon, Ulsan, and Kyunggi-Sihwa, were not polluted compared to their neighbors. Comparing all ozone indices, SUM06(yr), SUM06(3mon), AOT40(yr), AOT40(3mon), number of hours exceeding 100 ppb, 95 percentile, 99 percentile, and maximum concentration, it was determined reasonable to use SUM06(3mon), AOT40(3mon) and number of hours exceeding 100 ppb for evaluation of the chronic impact of ozone on vegetation.

'Arirang', Early-flowering Pure White Gladiolus with Purple Core (조생 순백색 자주 화심 글라디올러스 '아리랑')

  • 'Arirang', an early-flowering pure white gladiolus with purple core, was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 1998. The selection was derived from the cross between the progenies of the early flowering dark orange 'Arianne' and bright red domestic cultivars 'Hongkwang'. The breeding was conducted in 1993 and finally selected in 1998 after five (5) years (1994 to 1998) of experimentation. 'Arirang' is a cut flower with bright white color petals and purple core which exhibited early flowering and vigor without stem bending. These can be cultivated in areas or regions with strong winds during summer. 'Arirang' has a very firm growth form and sturdy branches which do not bend when planted in the open fields. Likewise, the plant had high tolerance to flooding and resistance hence could grow vigorously in open areas. It is a fast- growing plant which exhibits high corm production rate. 'Arirang' had a 10.5 cm wide flower and 140 cm plant height. During summer, the average number of days to flowering was recorded at 75 days of 'Arirang'. Top dressing must be conducted once or twice during corm production to enhance corm quality and quantity.

The Development History of the Korean Society of Ginseng (고려인삼학회의 발전사)

  • The Korean Society of Ginseng (KSG) was founded on September 26, 1975 with approximately 100 members. The first issue of the Korean Journal of Ginseng Science was published in English on December 1, 1976. However, the journal in English version lasted only one year, and the journal was instead published in Korean from 1978. In 1998, the names of the ginseng society and the journal were changed to the Korean Society of Ginseng and Journal of Ginseng Research (JGR), respectively. Four issues ofJGR were published in that year. JGR has again been published in English from Vol. 34 starting in 2010 and has been indexed in SCIE and SCOPUS since 2010 and PubMed Centralsince 2012. Since 2016, JGR has been published by the Elsevier. The impact factor (IF) of JGR has continuously increased - from the first IF of 2.259 in 2012 to 3.898 in 2015, and 5.487 in 2019. This year, the IF ofJGR ranked second among 122 domestic SCI journals and won first place worldwide in Integrative & Complementary Medicine category. The Society has published the semi-annual news magazine, Korean Ginseng Research and Industry since 2007. In March 2019, in addition to the scientific JGR, the Korean Society of Ginseng published the first issue of the Journal of Ginseng Culture on humanities and social sciences related to ginseng. To enhance international academic exchanges of ginseng, KSG organized for the first time, the 7th International Symposium on Ginseng (ISOG) in 1998. Afterwards, the ISOG has been held every four years, and the proceedings have been published. The KSG has also published various books, including Understanding of Korean Ginseng, Ginseng Research during the Past 20 Years, and 30-year History of the Korean Society of Ginseng, etc.

Serial Survey on Group A beta-Hemolytic Streptococcal Carrier Rate and Serotyping in Elementary School Children in 1996~1998 (3년간(1996~1998) 초등학생의 A군 연쇄구균 보균율과 혈청학적 분류에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : The accuracy of bacteriologic diagnosis of beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis depends on the degree of carrier rate in that area where the throat swabs are obtained and the evaluation of serological T typing as an epidemiologic marker is important to understand epidemiology of streptococcal infection. The purpose of this study is to know the carrier rates of group A streptococcus in normal children form four different areas and to find out the epidemiologic characteristic in distribution of the serotypes for 3 years. Method : Throat swabs were obtained from the tonsillar fossa of normal school children in four different areas(Uljin, Seoul, Osan, Kunsan) from March to May 1996, in Uljin in April 1997, and in Uljin in April 1998. The samples were plated on a 5% sheep blood agar plate and incubated overnight at $37^{\circ}C$ before examination for the presence of beta-hemolytic colonies. All isolated beta-hemolytic streptococcus were grouped and serotyped by T agglutination. Results : The carrier rate of beta-hemolytic streptococci and group A streptococci in 1996 were 27.6%, 18.6% at Uljin; 16.4%, 2.7% at Seoul; 33.0%, 26.0% at Osan; 20.0%, 12.3% at Kunsan, respectively. Among 1,192 normal school children from 4 different areas, we obtained 179 strains of group A streptococci. Fifty two percent of the strains were typable by T agglutination in 1996. Common T-type in 1996 were NT, T1, T3, T2 at Uljin; T12, T25 at Seoul; NT, T6, T28 at Osan; T25, T4, NT, T5 at Kunsan, in decreasing order, respectively. At Uljin, T1, T3, T25 accounted for 69% of strains in 1996, T1, T12, T25 accounted for 70% in 1997, and T12, T4 accounted for 88% in 1998. Conclusion : Higher carrier rates were found in Uljin and Osan, where there are a lower population density with scanty of medical facilities compared with another areas. We supposed that low carrier rates is likely to be related to antibiotic abuse or some epidemiologic factor. The periodic and seasonal serotyping analysis is important in monitoring and understanding the epidemiologic patterns of group A streptococci.

쏨뱅이, Sebastiscus marmoratus의 자어출산에 관한 연구

  • 연안정착성 어류인 쏨뱅이는 대부분의 볼락류와 더불어 자어를 출산하는 종이다. 그러므로 종묘생산을 원활히 수행하기 위해서는 건강한 자어를 안정적으로 확보하는 것이 무엇보다 중요한 요소이다. 이번 실험은 쏨뱅이 어미를 실내사육하고 자어 출산을 유도하여, 우량의 자어를 다량 확보할 수 있는 기초를 마련하고자 출산시기, 출산횟수, 자어마리수, 자어크기 등 쏨뱅이의 출산생태에 대하여 1997년부터 1999년까지 3년간 실내 자연출산에 관한 연구를 실시하였다. 1. 쏨뱅이 어미의 출산횟수. 쏨뱅이는 한 마리의 어미가 수회에 걸쳐 자어를 출산하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 1997년에서 1999년까지 전년 12월에서 4월까지 쏨뱅이 출산기간동안 출산횟수를 조사한 결과 1997년에는 24마리의 어미 중 총 8마리의 어미가 출산에 가입하였고, 이중 5마리는 1회 출산이 이루어 졌으며, 2마리는 2회, 1마리는 3회 출산이 일어났다. 1998년에는 24마리의 어미를 수용하여, 6마리의 어미에서 출산이 이루어 졌으며, 이중에 4마리가 1회만 출산하였고, 각각한 마리가 2회와 4회 출산하였다. 전장 23.6cm(체중 244.7g)의 쏨뱅이 어미는 총 4회 출산하면서 215,000마리의 자어를 나누어 낳았다. 1999년에는 21마리의 암컷 중 11마리가 출산하였다. 이중 9마리가 1회 출산하였으며 2마리가 2회 출산하였다. 종묘생산 된 쏨뱅이를 대상으로 자어 출산을 조사한 결과 만 2년어부터 출산에 가입하고 있었으며 출산기간동안 1회 출산하였다. 2. 출산자어의 마리수. 1997년과 1998년에 각각 24마리, 1999년에 31마리의 쏨뱅이 어미를 이용하여 출산자어 마리수를 조사하였다. 1997년 쏨뱅이 어미(전장 19.2~23.9cm, 체중 150.0~354.0g)에서 1회 출산 할 때마다 18,000~46,000 마리의 자어를 출산하였다 . 마리당 총출산량은 20,000~56,000 마리 였다. 1998년 쏨뱅이 어미 (전장 19.2~24.7cm, 체중 144.3~317.9g)는 1회 출산에 8,000~90,000마리의 자어를 출산하였고, 마리당 총출산량은 8,000~215,000 마리의 자어를 낳아서 개체에 따라 큰 차이를 나타내었다. 1999년에는(어미 : 전장 20.7~25.5cm, 체중 205.5~396.4g) 1 회 출산때마다 7,000~50,000 마리의 자어를 출산하였다. 3. 출산간격. 다회 출산한 쏨뱅이 어미가 첫 번째 출산에서 다음 출산까지 소요되는 기간을 조사한 결과 13일에서 25일이 걸리는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 4회 출산 한 1998년 쏨뱅이 어미는 첫 번째 출산 후 19일만에 두 번째 출산이 이루어 졌고 각각 13 일과 14 일만에 세 번째, 네 번째 출산이 이루어져 총 46일 동안 4회에 거쳐 자어를 출산하였다. 4. 출산자어의 크기. 1997년 3회 출산한 쏨뱅이의 출산시기별 자어 크기를 조사한 결과 첫 번째 출산에서는 평균전장 4.1$\pm$0.07mm의 자어를 낳았으나 두 번째 출산에서 자어의 크기는 평균전장이 3.9$\pm$0.11mm, 세 번째 3.8$\pm$0.12mm로 점차 작은 경향을 나타내었다.
