Many artists who led European Modernism had emigrated to America from Europe in 1930's after Nazi gave many limitations on art activities. Those artists became professors at the American Universities and started to do design work. So that European Modernism started to be known and gave much influences in America. The designers who was influenced by European artists have stood out in their design work from 1950's. Herb Lubalin, Paul Land, Bradbury Thomson, Saul Bass etc are as the representative designers. Herb Lubalin is one of the most famous graphic designer in 1970's. This study researched historical background how European modernism design has influenced to America. And then analyzed about Herb Lubalin who has influenced from European modernism and led 1960,70's American graphic design. Herb Lubalin identified that typography can be used not only for its original communication function but also the visual expression. Herb Lubalin made numerous new typography expression with his variety experimental sprit and creativity. Also his many different kind of experimental typography raised up a printing techniques in this period.
There are posters of a tourist and traffics as like railroads and ships among Cassandre's posters, and they are common in dealing with 'travelling'. This series of travelling posters which includes many of his representative works, are important in the point of showing his unique styles and the process how Hey have been changed. In this thesis, I tried to analyze, especially in the plastic and graphic aspects, how Cassandre catch the peoples' desire and dreams of the travelling and images on the mechanical property of railroads and ships in 1920's and 1930's and how he put them into his works. I think that has revealed sense and visual language which has revealed through this analysis still give some messages to advertising media of moving images based on electronic technology today.
The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the use of the western building system with the change of the architectural design in the Japanese colonial period focused on the facility built by Joseon Government-General in 1910s. Through the 131 cases of governmental building, the tendency of the use of western building system. After 1910, Japanese Imperialism adopted the western wooden building system which main structure was made with combination of small pieces of timber for building the modern governmental facility because of the political and financial intention. So, all facilities were designed similarly by the structural module and the facade was finished by the feather boarding in the same with the 'sitamitakei-giyohu' in Japan. the functional requirements of each facility was not revealed. Such an western wooden building system was used until 1920s with the change of the facade by the mortar coating. But, in 1920s-1930s, the building system have begun to change. The use of the brick system caused some changes although the planing concept was still lasted. On the other hand, the use of the reinforced concrete led to more changes on the overall scheme.
The purpose of this thesis is a searching out the characteristics of Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism and its influences on Korean modern dwellings especially in the time of 1930's. At the early stage of the colonial time($1905{\sim}1919$), the central corridor type Japanese dwellings were implanted into Korea for the Japanese official residences. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling was an urban modern dwelling compromised between Japanese style and western style and distinguished by an outer-court type plan, Japanese entrance hall, central corridor and western style reception room. After the 1920's the central corridor type Japanese dwellings have spreaded itself and became a prototype of a modern dwelling in Korea. The characteristics of the central corridor type Japanese dwellings have influenced on the Korean high class dwellings and Korean architects' proposals for modern dwelling in the time of 1930's. By the implantation and spread of the central corridor type Japanese dwellings, Korean modern dwellings at the same time have affected and undergone transformation. The aspects of transformation were ; The outbreaking of the Japanese style entrance and central corridor, the transformation of MaDang from the inner court with a function of circulation into the outer court garden with plants and the transformation of Korean dwellings from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type. The central corridor type Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism makes function as a precedent of a modern urban dwelling to Korean and makes Korean dwellings transform from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type.
The period from 1946 until his retirement from Department of Forest Resources, Seoul National University was a time of research and professional activity on many fronts for Korean Plant Taxonomy. From 1952 to 1984, he travelled south Korea and collected more than 70,000 specimens. Working out of this project, Dr. Lee developed the SNUA herbarium (Herbarium of The Arboretum of Seoul National University) as the best University herbarium in Korea for the modem floristic work. Dr. Lee's first interest rests on his contributions to our understanding of the twig identification in early 1950. Asian deciduous oak taxa have attracted particular focus to him late 1950 and early 1960. Accordingly Dr. Lee has been one of the specialists on systematic study of Asian oak which is a basis of identification in eastern Asia now. Dr. Lee's contributions concerning rare and endangered plants in Korea provide a tremendous information after a Japanese taxonomist, T. Nakai did in early 1920 to late 1930 in Korea. During his fourteen year career from 1970 to 1984, Dr. Lee spent time to investigate flora of many local and National Park sites. Much of his effort was directed to the voucher specimens for which he worked for the Illustrated Flora of Korea and also served as a field collector. These collections at SNUA enabled us to extend our educational outreach from the local to the national flora research. Although Dr. Lee has been and continues to be the soul of SNUA, collection records about his purpose and aim for each trip are not well documented except date and field studied sites. This lesson enables us to tackle the same issue of balancing quantity and quality with well documented specimens now.

The 1920s and 1930s were when new trends became prominent in Korean housing architecture. This study began with a curiosity about the appearance of residential gardens during the transition period, when housing types were changing. Since gardens are constantly evolving and living spaces, it is not easy to give a clear picture of their evolution. However, through popular magazines and newspaper articles published in the 1920-30s, this study investigated how people perceived the gardens socially and how they engaged in gardening. First, the study of Gyeongseong's urbanization process revealed that people perceived gardens as a way to give natural beauty to the urban environment. Therefore, the creation of a residential garden was strongly encouraged. Second, the housing improvement movement, which the architects actively discussed during this period, emphasized that a garden is a factor that can help improve the quality of the residential environment in terms of hygiene and landscape aesthetics. Third, since the media provided information on gardening, it was confirmed that the number of people engaged in gardening as a hobby increased. As designers and gardeners who had received a modern education became more active, the concept of "designed gardens" was formed. Lastly, although the houses were divided into various types, the shapes of the gardens did not show a significant difference according to the architecture type. They tended to embrace the time's ideal garden design and style. Therefore, even in a traditional hanok, Western-style gardens were naturally harmonized into the overall architecture, and exotic plant species could be found. Although the gardens found in media images were limited to those belonging to the homes of the intelligentsia, it can be seen that representativeness was secured, considering the popularity and ripple effect of the media. Therefore, this study contributes to the literature as it confirmed the ideal gardens and gardening methods in the 1920s and 30s.
This article is devoted to little-studied play of M.A. Bulgakov "Adam and Eve". By the end of 1920's - the beginning of 1930's soviet society is differentiated again, its construction is rebuilded. In the new condition drama is needed as much as possible. Drama on the stage is ideal model for instruction of "Mass". Thereupon soviet society asked "New Hero", "New play", which can rebuild soviet citizen in the new construction of government. Thereby the play of M.A. Bulgakov "Adam and Eve" is created by order of soviet society. In this play typical soviet people are represented: Adam Krasovsky(engineer), Daragan(pilot-terminator), Ponchik-Nepobeda(writer), Zahar Markizov(proletarian-baker). They are different from each other by their occupation and formation, but they have same consciousness and they think identically. Bulgakov makes stand such problems: impersonality and unfreedom of human being in the government of communism. Bulgakov, using Parody, doubt the possibility of realization of utopia of Soviet government. Bulgakov show to us that Adam Krasocsky is not real Adam-first human being. In the play we can see the real Adam is the scientist-intelligent Efrosimov. Bulgakov change the place of Ponchik with the place of Markizov. The idiot and the fool is recognized not Markisov-drinker, tyrant, but Ponchik-writer. After the disaster Markisov, reading a Bible, is changing and by the end of play he started writing his own novel. Indeed if Ponchik wrote hoked-up novel, Markisov writes a real own history. Request of Leningrad Theater for Bulgakov to write about the future war comes from the spirit of the time. But Bulgakov in this play "Adam and Eve" could insist that the "Life" is a supreme value.
Heading behaviour of native japonica (GI) and Japanese varieties (GII) grown during 1910-1920s were thermo-sensitive, home bred varieties during 1930s (GIII) - 1950s (GIV) were photo-sensitive and semi-dwarf indica derived varieties released since 1971 (GV) were controlled by basic vegetative phase. Number of leaves on main culm was increased with varietal improvement and culm length was gradually shortened as variety improved. GV variety had the shortest plant height among the groups. The first internode length was about 30cm in all groups and difference of 2nd-4th internode length was caused shortening the culm length. Panicle length and diameter of panicle neck were shortened and became thinner as variety developed from GI to GIV, however, GV had longer panicle and thick panicle neck, respectively. Number of panicles/hill and straw weight/hill increased and became heavier as variety improve from GI to GIV but GV had moderate number of panicle/hill and relatively light straw weight. Number of spikelet/panicle has been reduced with varietal improvement but GV had the biggest number. Grain yield/hill also increased as variety improved, however, it was decreased as transplanting season postponed and GV had shown the most sensitive difference. Top dry matter weight at heading stage and at 20 days after heading (20 DAH) had no difference among the groups except GI which was the smallest. Average grain weight at 20 DAH was heavier in the order of GI > GII, GV > GIV > GIII. It had a little variation in GI & GII while that of other variety group showed significant decrease as transplanting delayed. Harvest index (HI) of GV was the highest at 54% for the earlier transplanting and GIII had the lowest HI. Difference of HI became conspicuous for the later transplanting, the varieties bred later had the lower HI when transplanting of rice delayed. At the earliest transplanting applied (May 15), the grain yield was higher in the order of GI > GIV > GIII > GII > GI, however, that of Tongil type variety (GV) was the lowest for the latest transplanting (June 29). Interrelationship among the agronomical characteristics and grain yield was discussed.
The term "new woman" (신여성 [Sinyeoseong], 新女性) refers to an idealized image of contemporary women during the so-called modern period in East Asia. In Korea, these "modern girls" were also referred to as modan (毛斷), or "cut-hair", reflecting changes in appearances that rejected the traditional value system in favor of "the new" in everyday life. Although it was used to refer to the perceived educated leaders of this new period, it also had the negative connotation of referring to frivolous women only interested in the latest fashion. The popular discourse on this "new woman" was constantly changing during this early modern period in East Asia, ranging from male-driven women's movements to women-driven liberal and socialist movements. The discourse often included ideals of what constituted female impeccability in women's domestic roles and enlightened views on housekeeping, yet in most cases the "new woman" was also expected to be a good wife and mother as well as a successful career woman. The concept of the "new woman" was also accompanied by an upheaval in women's social roles and their physical boundaries, and resulted in women repositioning themselves in the new society. The new look was a way of constructing their bodies to fit their new roles, and this again was rapidly reproduced in visual media. Newspapers, magazines, and plays had gained immense popularity by this time and provided visual material for the age with covers, advertisements, and illustrations. This research will explore the fashion of the "new woman" through archival resources, specifically magazines published in the 1920s and 1930s. It will investigate how women's appearances and the images they pursued reflected the ideal image of the "new woman." Fashion information providers, trendsetters, and levels of popular acceptance will also be examined in the context of the early stage of the fashion industry in East Asia, including production and distribution. Additionally, as the idea of the "new woman" was a worldwide phenomenon throughout the 19th and early 20th century, the effect of Japanese colonialism on the structure of Korean culture and its role as a cultural mediator will also be considered in how the ideal image of beauty was sought, and whether this was a western, colonial, or national preference.

This study analyzed the unit of child rearing in four Household textbooks approved by the Department of Education during the 1920s-30s. These Household textbooks is contained a unit related to child rearing among Household textbooks approved by the Department of Education at that time. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, the structure of the child rearing unit in the Household textbooks were largely composed of 'part, chapter and section' and this structure and contents were similar among all the textbooks. Second. in general, the four textbooks spared a large space for 'childcare,' nursing' and 'new-born babies and infants,' suggesting the importance of these contents. Third, cautions for pregnant women were taught to call attention not only of pregnant women but also of their families to importance of pregnancy. Fourth, the child rearing unit contained many illustrations and pictures and some pictures were shared among the textbooks. Firth, in acquiring medical knowledge related to diseases, the textbooks demanded child-rearing mothers to 'observe' and 'scrutinize' any symptoms appearing in the child. These contents were connected with commercial products but far distant from the realities. The detailed method of 'nursing' also required a lot of time and accuracy impractical in real life.
