Relevancy between Aliases of Eight Provinces and Topographical Features during the Chosun Dynasty (′조선 8도′의 별칭과 지형의 관련성)

  • In Korea, aside from their official administrative names, aliases of each province or some regions are widely used not only today but also during the Joseon period when the provincial system as local administrative system was firmly implemented. Of aliases, the most representative were Giho, Gwandong, Hoseo, Haeseo, Honam, Yaeongnam, Gwanseo, and Gwanbuk representing the eight provinces (precisely, Gyeonggi and seven provinces) of Chosun Dynasty, as well as Yeongdong and Yeongseo that represent the east and the west of Gangwon-do. These aliases are mostly based on topographical features and physiographical elements, and compared to the official names of eight provinces which depended solely on city names. Of aliases, some appeared in literature during 13-l4th centuries, and all provincial aliases seem to have been widely used after the late 15th century. Aliases continued to be used for 500 to over 700 years. Aliases of eight provinces, geographically, played not lesser role than their official names. Aliases of the eight provinces and regions during the Chosun Dynasty that have been handed down are considered as holding their places' cultural and historical backgrounds, and have become important enough to be accepted as a unit of geographical regional division. The origin and meaning of aliases of each province have been partially disclosed to the geographical circle and the general public. However, the details should be reviewed. First of all, Gwan in Gwanbuk, Gwanseo and Gwandong, as well as Yeong in Yeongnam, Yeongdong and Yeongseo, are each considered as meaning Sobaek Mountain Range and Taebaek Mountain Range with many borderline areas (borders) and military strategic hubs. Also, Ho in Honam, Hoseo, and Giho, are considered as based on the Geum River and Eurimji, and Haeseo are considered as meaning the west of the Gyeonggi Bay, and having relevancy with the first letters of Haeju and Seoha (Pungcheon).

A Study on the 3D Reconstruction and Historical Evidence of Recumbent Buddha Based on Fusion of UAS, CRP and Terrestrial LiDAR (UAS, CRP 및 지상 LiDAR 융합기반 와형석조여래불의 3차원 재현과 고증 연구)

  • Recently, Interest in the restoration and 3D reconstruction of cultural properties due to the fire of Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019 has been focused once again after the 2008 Sungnyemun fire incident in South Korea. In particular, research to restore and reconstruct the actual measurement of cultural properties using LiDAR(Light Detection and ranging) and conventional surveying, which were previously used, using various 3D reconstruction technologies, is being actively conducted. This study acquires data using unmanned aerial imagery of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), which has recently established itself as a core technology in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, and the existing CRP(Closed Range Photogrammetry) and terrestrial LiDAR scanning for the Recumbent Buddha of Unju Temple. Then, the 3D reconstruction was performed with three fusion models based on SfM(Structure-from-Motion), and the reproducibility and accuracy of the models were compared and analyzed. In addition, using the best fusion model among the three models, the relationship with the Polar Star(Polaris) was confirmed based on the real world coordinates of the Recumbent Buddha, which contains the astronomical history of Buddhism in the early 11th century Goryeo Dynasty. Through this study, not only the simple external 3D reconstruction of cultural properties, but also the method of reconstructing the historical evidence according to the type and shape of the cultural properties was sought by confirming the historical evidence of the cultural properties in terms of spatial information.

Winning Coalition, Expansion of Wealth, and Naval Power (승자연합과 부(富)의 확장, 그리고 해군력)

  • Human history shows diverse strategies for survival and prosperity. This study introduces the concept of the expansion of wealth as a key to explain choice and behavior of political entities. American scholar, -Bruce Bueno de Mesquita-, offers theoretical grounds for this concept in that the cores of selectorate theory is settled. The political entity consists of two groups, -the winning coalition that has power to replace leader and non-winning coalition that has not. Leaders implement policies serving for the welfare of winning coalition in return for their loyalty. Both internal problems caused by demographic changes and external ones of climate changes, epidemic disease, or invasion compel leader and winning coalition to adopt policies of expansion that they believe may lead to the acquisition of wealth needed to counter those problems. The process starts by occupying one spot where other entities reside and then connecting it to its own. The line between spots functions as a foothold to form a new line to other spots. By repeating this process, a space is created in which new laws and orders are instated. In the early stage of expansion, war is hardly avoidable. Once finished successfully, the political circumstance tilts to encourage economic activities in order to generate national revenues to strengthen political power of winning coalition. However, as scale of economic activities grows, so does political power of civic classes in production and trade. To gain financial support required to run the political entity, delegation of power or bestowing autonomy to non-winning coalition is inevitable. Thus, expansion is not the ultimate solution, only to prolong the political survival if succeed. Maritime power came to attractive option when overland expansion had become obstructed. It offered much greater advantages in terms of political risks and financial burdens in exploring new regions of precious commodities than overland expansion. Each political entity around world have been, for the first time in human history, connected by maritime means since 15th century. It is worthy of noting that land conditions propelled people out to sea. Political and economic situations created opportunities to exploit geographical position in pursuit of wealth. In the 21st century, we witness the operation of international winning coalition that presides over the rules of expansion. Competing for market is synonymous to the expansion in this era, the cause and aim of it has not been changed though. Energy and dollars are key factors of expansion since the end of the 2nd world war. No matter what the forms and conditions change, naval power is still the most relevant means for expansion as it retains unique characters of maneuver, flexibility, continuity, display and projection of power. The strategy for using naval power should be in line with two different approaches for expansion: Approaches to the international winning coalition by making contribution to world order, and approaches to the non-international winning coalition by enhancing military diplomatic activities. The former will serve our share of winning coalition while the latter will open chances to acquire further prosperity.

Manning Structure and Navigation Skills of the Period of Chosun appeared in POHAE-Rok ("표해록"에 나타난 조선 시대 선원 조직과 항해술)

  • It has not been well known to the publics about the manning structure and navigation skills of the period of Chosun CHOI Bu left several records on the crews and navigation skills in his book PYOHAE-Rok. Though PYOHAE-Rok the record of Drifting across the Sea, written by CHOI Bu in 15th century, has been studied by many scholars from the Korean Sea Literary viewpoints, no one was interested in the above book from a maritime history standpoint until now. In this paper the author tried to find out the manning structure of ship and navigation skills in the period of Chosun Finally the author would like to explain the reasons CHOI's ship could succeeded in reaching mainland CHINA but CHANG Han-cheol's ship was wrecked.

From Perspectival Space to Projected Space -A Study on Architectural Design Using Three Dimensional Projection of Two Dimensional Drawings- (투시도적 표상에서 공간의 투사로 -2차원 그림의 3차원 투사를 활용하는 현대건축의 경향에 대한 연구-)

  • Many contemporary architectural avant gardes tend to use painting as a medium to create architecture which goes beyond the rationalized spatial conception of modem architecture represented by perspectivism. They produce non perspective drawings to represent spatial Ideas, and expand it through poetic imagination to create an unexpected architectural form and space. This paper attempts to analyze the historical origin and background of dominance of drawing in the production of architecture. It was with the invention of perspective that architectural representation became important tool for architectural production. Thereafter, drawing was considered prior to actual building and architecture was considered a three dimensional realization of two dimensional drawing. Modernist avant gardes such as Cubism shattered the rationalized pictorial space of perspective and found a new pictorial space. They tried to extend it to three dimensional space through parallel projection largely based on the Hildebrand's theory of pure visibility. However, due to the ambiguity of the position of the viewing subject, their attempts could not succeed in creating a new architecture. The new architectural avant garde of the 70's rediscovered the early 20th century avant gardes in their attempt to create a new architecture which can register the fragmented spatial condition of contemporary society, and used painting as a medium to create architecture. Their difference from the early avant gardes was that they used poetic imagination rather than parallel projection in the process of projecting three dimensional space and form from the painting. However, their architecture cannot escape the scopic field of perspectivism in that they rely on the picture plane and the distance between object and viewing subject. Therefore, I conclude that in order to create architecture which goes beyond the rationalized space of modern architecture, it is necessary to resort to other tradition of modern architecture than visual one.

A Study on Suwenzhigui(素問指歸) of Ge Songping(戈頌平) - Focusing on Yinyang theory (陰陽論) - (과송평(戈頌平)의 『소문지귀(素問指歸)』에 대한 고찰(考察) - 음양론(陰陽論)을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : Ge Songping(戈頌平) was a medical doctor in Qing Dynasty during the late $19^{th}$ century who annotated the original texts of four medical classics and wrote Suwenzhigui (素問指歸), Shanghanzhigui(傷寒指歸), Jinkuizhigui(金匱指歸), and Shennongbencaojingzhigui (神農本草經指歸). This paper's objective is to compile information about his writings, and shed a light on the unique characteristic of his scholarly works. Methods : Information regarding Ge Songping's life has been gathered through existing research papers and the sources revealed in the introduction. His works were divided into different formal characters as listed in part of the introduction and in the table of contents. Contents related to Yinyang(陰陽) found in Suwenzhigui were studied in order to discover his unique scholastic character. After selecting and analyzing three texts related to Yinyang, some characteristic terms and emphasized contents were studied. Results : The review yielded knowledge about Ge Songping's life, the times of his publications, the meanings of the names of his books, and basic information abou them. In terms of his scholarstic works, he used the ideas he gained from Shanghanlun(傷寒論) to form his medical theory, and used this to write annotations for four types of medical classics. The features of his theory of Yinyang can be divided into four categories. First, he coined the term Qiye(氣液) to bring contrast between yinyang as yinye(陰液) and yangqi(陽氣). Second, he shaped the temporal and spatial structure of the circulation of yinyang based on Shierdizhi(十二地支). Third, he explained the relationship between yin and yang while mainly focused on yangqi. Fourth, he explained the physiology and pathology mechanisms while focused on the circulation of ascending and descending and the idea of mutual beneficiary.

The Analysis on the Characteristics and the Structure of the Semi Automatic Dongdahoe Loom (전통 반자동식 동다회직기의 특성과 구조 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Dahoe is a traditional Korean term for cords and Dongdahoe for round cords. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the structure of a semi-automatic loom depicted in the paintings of Jun Geun Kim, and verify whether it actually worked or not. Jun Geun Kim is a genre painter of the late Joseon Dynasty. His nom de plume is Gisan and he drew genre paintings for foreigners who visited Korea in the late 19th century. These paintings are important in understanding the lifestyle and custom of the times. His paintings at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in Germany and the British Museum in England both depict a semi automatic loom that operates two looms at the same time. This is a unique loom that is not found in any other country and currently no artifacts of such loom exist in Korea. The study went through the following steps: We first analyzed the structure and the operating mechanism of the loom in the painting. The structure of each parts and their roles were also analyzed. Then a loom that was similar in structure and size was made to check if it was operational. The loom depicted in the paintings had some problems, and adjustments to fix the said problems were made accordingly. Wood was primarily used to make the $80{\times}90cm$ loom. The loom was used to make Dahoe and the study confirmed that there were no differences between the handmade Dongdahoe and the Dongdahoe made with the semi automatic loom.

  • No.87 Sogong-dong where is the Chosun hotel stand. There was the Nambeol-gung(south ern royal villa) which had been a reception hall for enboys of the toadied country before Hwangudan圜丘壇 being set up in the year 1897. The site of the Nambeol-gung was Gyeongjeong慶貞 princess's a lot for house in the early 15th century. But after princess's death, it occurred property dispute between her son and four daughters. As a result of the dispute, a lot and a house of all the princess's properties reverted to the government. At reverted this lot was established a big royal villa in the year 1583 and that royal villa was granted to Uian prince. The villa reverted to the government again when the Uian義安 prince was dead in 12 years old by an epidemic. After the Imjin Invasion壬辰倭亂, another houses and buildings got to be role as a palace because of all the palace in the capital was burnt down to ashes. Among others Nambeol-gung was brought into play as the royal audience chamber. As well as, the villa became brought out role as a reception hall for enboys of the toadied country instead of a damaged reception hall the Taepyong-gwan太平館. In period when the envoy didn't come, the Nambeol-gung was used to extraordinary office of government like Dogam都監. This situation is to mean that the Nambeol-gung is not the royal villa any more. Because of the Nambeol-gung was built as a royal villa, that spaces were composited like space of house and palace. But this spatial composition and spatial name were not fit to hold a ceremony of government office. After all, Nambeol-gung was used change only the spatial name conform to ceremony of office keep up the spatial composition.

Design and Analysis of Heat Exchanger Using Sea Water Heat Source for Cooling

  • Purpose: The temperature in Seoul has risen 3 times more than the average global temperature increase for the past 100 years. Today, summer starts 15 days earlier than the early 20th century and is 32 days longer. This tendency causes rapid increase of cooling energy demand. Following this effect, seawater heat resources are to be used as an countermeasure for global warming. Incheon Port near the Western Sea has the lowest water temperature in the winter in South Korea in which it is suitable to use seawater cold heat resources. Method: The cold heat resource is gained from seawater when the water temperature is the lowest in the winter time and saved in a seasonal thermal storage. This can be used as cold heat resource in the summer time. A heat exchanger is essential to gain seawater cold energy. Due to this necessity, sea water heat resource heat exchangers are modeled by heat transfer equations and the fluid characteristics are analyzed. Also, a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) program is used to conduct simulation on the fluid characteristics of heat exchangers. The analyzed data of deducted from this process are comprehensively analyzed and discussed. Result: Regarding the performance of the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger was operated following the prediction within the range of heat transfer rate of minimum 3.3KW to maximum 33.6KW per device. In the temperature change analysis of the heat exchanger, fluid analysis by heat transfer equations almost corresponded to the temperature change by CFD simulation. Therefore, it is considered that the results of this study can be used as design data of heat exchangers.

The Characteristics of Flower Patterned Fabrics used for the Shrouds in Chosun Dynasty (조선시대 염습의(殮襲衣)에 사용된 화문직물의 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine of the flower patterned fabrics used for the Shrouds during 15~18th century in Chosun Dynasty. The Shrouds at that time could be classified by the garments for the dead(殮襲衣) and the utensils used in religious services(殮襲諸具). And we looked into the types and the compounding methods of the flower pattern used for the utensils used in religious services(殮襲諸具) as well as the Shrouds accounting to the uses. Results of this study are as follows. 1) The flower patterned fabrics weaved as the uses of the garments for the dead(殮襲衣), item by item, were divided into the upper garment, the lower garment and men's Po(coat). 2) Seeing Jeogori, mixed various flower patterned fabrics, among the upper garment, there were focused on the various good meanings such as longevity, integrity and prosperity etc. 3) The flower patterns in men's Po(coat) were used a lot in Jangui and Dahnryoung. Cheollik, Dappo, Jeonbok, etc made of the flower patterned fabrics, were of small number but we can feel an aesthetic sense of men at that time. 4) The flower patterned fabrics weaved the lower garments, were used much more in the skirts than in the trousers, for reasons of the wrapping a dead body. 5) Seeing the flower pattern used the utensils used in religious services(殮襲諸具), the pattern of Lotus and Arabesque, among the types of flower pattern, had a majority.
