  • While the international construction industry for Korean companies have grown in market size exponentially in the recent years, the profit rate of small and medium sized construction companies (SMCCs) are incomparably lower than those of large construction companies. Furthermore, small and medium size companies, especially subcontractor, lacks the judgement of project involvement appropriateness, which leads to an unpredictable profit rate. Therefore, this research aims to create a profit rate prediction model for the international construction project focusing on SMCCs. First, the factors that influence the profit rate and the area of profit zone are defined by using a total of 8,637 projects since the year 1965. Seconds, an extensive literature review is conducted to derive 10 influencing factors. Multiple regression analysis and corresponding judgement technique are used to derive the weight of each factor. Third, cased based reasoning (CBR) methodology is applied to develop the model for profit rate analysis in the project participation review stage. Using 120 validation data set, the developed model showed 11% (14 data sets) of error rate for type 1 and type 2 error. In utilizing the result, project decision makers are able to make decision based on authentic results instead of intuitive based decisions. The model additionally give guidance to the Korean subcontractors when advancing into the international construction based on the model result that shows the profit distribution and checks in advance for the quality of the project to secure a sound profit in each project.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variation of water quality in the Nakdong River by the Four major river projects. For this purpose, the nearest upstream water quality monitoring stations were selected and water quality data such as BOD, COD, SS, TN, TP, and TOC were collected for the before Four major river project(from January 2003 to November 2008), during the project(from September 2008 to April 2012) and after the project(from May 2012 to September 2017). As a result, the concentration of DO, BOD, COD, TN, and TOC after the project tend to be higher than the before project period. On the other hand, the SS and T-P values decreased after the project. Spatial analysis of BOD, COD, and TOC, which have large changes in water quality factor, by water quality grade, showed a tendency that water quality grade after the project was worse than before the project.

  • Present PII(Private Infrastructure Investment) in Korea has increased up to 11% compared to the year 2003 and is expected to increase in the future. In spite of its rapid increase, we don't have any definite standard or system which distinctly presents the rate of return for domestic PII yet, and practical and scientific research is not sufficient compared to its necessity and importance. Hence, in this study we suggests methods to estimate the rate of return of PII to promote SOC PII to last successfully and present the proper level of rate of return of PII which is appropriate for domestic situations through diverse analysis. Therefore, to present reasonable rate of return, we have used 5 methods: previous research analysis, case study, financial index analysis, analysis of investor's rate of return, and analysis of rate of return in a real estate market. After comparing and analyzing these methods, at the end, we have presented the appropriate level of rate of return of PII, which can be applied in the domestic market.

  • The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded collaborative project on The Economic Feasibility Analysis of Crop Cultivation Practice Project in Pirganj and Kurigram Districts in Bangladesh will started during 2008-2012, for 4 years with total project cost of US$ 571,270. The project will be implemented in 6 villages; has 1,097 hectares areas which is divided into 948 hectares of agricultural land, 52 hectares of forest land and 345 hectares of other land, covered 1,059 households equal to 5,305 persons in Pirganj and Kurigram districts The project has proposed to be implemented in joint collaboration by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) Bangladesh with full participation of the farmers' groups of respective project site. The specific objectives of the project are: (1) to estimate the productivity of paddy, wheat, maize, tobacco and sugarcane (2) to determine the cost of production and returns to the above mentioned crops (3) to study the interrelationship between inputs and output of the above mentioned crops and (4) to examine the resource utilization patterns at farm level. In this project analysis, the net incremental profit is US$33,028. The expected incremental project benefit and incremented production cost are estimated as US$ 219,959 and US$ 186,931 respectively. The financial decision making criteria would be followed in this crop cultivation practice project. After the project implementation, the expected project benefits are assumed to be continued for 15 years. The benefit cost ratio (B/C) of the project is estimated at 1.077 (table 11) when using discount rate of 10% as an opportunity cost of capital in Bangladesh. FIRR of project is estimated at 26.15% which is bigger than the opportunity cost by more than double. So this project is financially feasible and acceptable. Therefore, this project should be extended to other areas to increase the farm income and economic growth of marginal poor farmers in Bangladesh.

  • This paper addresses a methodology for monitoring the first phase('92-94') progress and its implication fo Highly Advanced National R&D Projects (HAN or G7 project) in Korea. The authors suggest a three-stage life cycle model for the management of national R&D program; planning stage, implementing & monitoring stage, and evaluating & harvesting stage. The interim evaluation, the main focuses of this paper, is one of the key issues for the effective management of national R&D program at the implementing & monitoring stage. The conceptual framework of the interim evaluation was developed both through reviewing related literature and considering the characteristics of the HAN program. A stepwise procedure of interim evaluation was introduced: 'initial screen' and 'detailed examination'. At initial screen all 11 projects were reviewed in terms of both their relevance and performance in order to decide whether further detailed scrutiny is needed or not. If there exist critical problems on the relevance or on the intermediate progress of each project, it is to be under further detailed examination. Evaluation was initiated by the G7 Planning and Evaluation Committee, which was established for advising, directing, and monitoring the HAN Projects, with the help of large number of experts from industries, universities, and research institutes. The monitoring results were reported to the related ministries and project coordinating agencies, and reflected in the second phase.

  • In order to have better understanding of the concept and meaning of soundscape, it is very important to consider entirely the objectives, activities, historical development processes and accomplishments of world soundscape project leading by R. Murray Schafer. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of this study is to inquire into the concrete development processes and practical activities of the soundscape in order to correspond to Schafer's conception of a tuning of the world. The establishment of WSP is based on noise pollution, listening attitudes and noisy music. Schafer formulated 5 types of item as a target, and wrote down concrete activities to achieve the goals. Especially, he devised the conceptual, educational, political and social strategies as the practical strategies of WSP. It is obtained various products by the activities of WSP from the planning starting year in 1969 to the stagnation period in 1979. That is, there are the social survey on noise-vancouver 1969, the book of noise, Okeanos, a study of community noise by-laws in canada 1972, the music of the environment, the vancouver soundscape, european sound diary, five village soundscapes, handbook for acoustic ecology and so on. The research activities of WSP arouse inspiration in many people interested in sound. Specially, it is emphasized the importance of increasing for their social roles in order to more actively improve and create the quality of sound environment. Also, it shows us the directions on how to lead our furture sound.

  • Construction industry is overwhelmed by delay and often has suffered cost and time overrun. In this context, Last Planner System (LPS) has been considered as a very useful tool for the management of the construction process. Many previous studies have reported its effectiveness in construction performance. This study aims to evaluate the level of importance of the Last Planner processes in the Vietnam construction industry (VCI), and analyze the existing barriers when implementing these processes in construction management. These barriers were collected based on previous studies from International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC). A survey was carried out through questionnaire. The respondents are been experienced people in construction project management. There are four processes of LPS that were investigated including master schedule, phase schedule, lookahead plan, and weekly work plan. The results showed that master schedule is the most important item when performing a construction project in the VCI. The highest degree of agreement belongs to 'owner - contractor' pair with 77.1% importance indices; whereas the lowest belongs to 'consultants - contractors' pair with 63.8% importance indices. Eventually, three barrier factors were extracted from factor analysis technique with 62.2% of variance explained.
