  • [ $11\AA$ ] tobermorite$(5CaO{\cdot}6SiO_2{\cdot}5H_2O)$ is synthesized from the mixtures of calcium hydroride and quartz using alumina in a molar ratio $Ca(OH)_2/SiO_2$ of 0.8 at $180^{\circ}C$ for 8 and 24 hrs under saturated steam pressure. The influence of alumina on the formation of $11\AA$ tobermorite was investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. $11\AA$ tobermorite containing increasingly larger amounts of aluminum showed a shift of the basal spacing from 11.3 to $11.6\AA$. In general, there was a direct linear relation between the basal spacing and added content of alumina. The differential thermal analysis curves showed that $11\AA$ tobermorite with increasing alumina contents exhibited the exothermic peak at high temperature, namely $11\AA$ tobermorite containing aluminum gave a sharp exothermic peak at temperature around $850\~860^{\circ}C$ in the case of $S_3\~S_5$. The absorption band at $1607\~1620cm^{-1}$ is attributed to the bending vibration of water, and the position of the main O-H stretching and Si-O lattice vibration of $11\AA$ tobermorite at 3500 and $965cm^{-1}$ respectively is not altered. Consequently the existence of alumina accelerates the crystallization of $11\AA$ tobermorite, and that the aluminum ion appears to substitute for the silicon ion in $11\AA$ tobermorite structure. Al-containing tobermorite is distinguished from Al-free tobermorite.

  • The mixture of quartz powder and slaked lime with plenty water was oscillated in an autoclave and treated hydrothermally under the pressure of 10 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 8 hours. The main mineral synthesized was confirmed 11$\AA$ tobermorite by the method of X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. Tobermorite was heat-treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ for investigation of transformation of morphology and structure. Electron micrographs showed the thin platy structure of synthetic tobermorite with a little of crumpled foil or fibrous semi-crystalline calcium silicate hydrates. No difference in structure was appeared under the temperature of 80$0^{\circ}C$ but tobermorite converted gradually into wollastonite at 800$^{\circ}$~85$0^{\circ}C$. On heating, moulded material from tobermorite hardly shrinks under 80$0^{\circ}C$.

  • On the calcium silicate hydrothermal reaction, the effect of NaOH and KOH Studied. Forincreasing the yield of fibers and to promote crystal growth, Rotary autoclae has been used. By addition NaOH solution, approximately 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of pectolite was grown. By addition KOH solution, approximately 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of 11$\AA$-Tobermorite was grown under the conditon of 21$0^{\circ}C$ 10 days reaction. These results indicate that 11$\AA$-Tobermorite was stabilized by KOH over a wide Temperature and composition range.

  • Titanium and [titanium+Na(K)] substituted 11${\AA}$ tobermorites solids synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at 180$^{\circ}C$ exhibit cation exchange properties toward heavy transition metal cations, such as Fe$^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Cd^{2+}\;and/or\;Pb^{2+}$. The amount of heavy metal cations taken up by these solids was found in the order: Fe$^{2+}>Zn^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Pb^{2+}$, and reached maximum at 10% [Ti+K]-substituted tobermorite. The total cation exchange capacity of the 10% Ti+Na (K) - substituted tobermorites synthesized here range from 71 to 89 meq/100 g, and 50-56 meq/100g for Ti-substituted only. Results indicated that 10% [Ti+K] substitution exhibit cation exchange capacity more 2.4 times than the unsubstituted-tobermorite. This is due to the increase of the number of active sites on the exchangers. The incorporation of Ti and/or [Ti+Na(K)] in the lattice structure of synthesized tobermorites is due to exchange of Ti$^{4+}{\Leftrightarrow}2Ca^{2+}\;and/or\;Ti^{4+}+2Na^+(K^+){\Leftrightarrow}3Ca^{2+}$, respectively. The mechanism of Ti and [Ti+Na(K)] incorporations in the crystal lattice of the solids during synthesis and the heavy metal cations uptaken by these solids is studied.
