  • This paper presents a novel bio-mimetic quadruped walking robot with a waist joint, which connects the front and the rear parts of the body. The new robot, called ELIRO-1(Eating LIzard RObot version 1), can bend its body while the legs is transferred, thereby increasing the stride and speed of the robot. The waist-jointed walking robot can move easily from side to side, which is an important feature to guarantee a larger gait stability margin than that of a conventional single rigid-body walking robot. We design the mechanical structure of the robot, which is small and light to have high movability and high degree of human friendship. In this paper, we describe characteristics of the waist joint and leg mechanism as well as the analysis using ADAMS to select appropriate actuators. In addition, a hardware and software of the controller of ELIRO-1 are described.

  • This paper is to study the exoskeleton robot for the walking of the elderly and the disabled. We developed and tested an Exoskeletal robot with two axes of freedom for joint motion. The EEG and EMG signals were used to move the joints of the Exoskeletal robot. By analyzing the EMG signal, the control signal was extracted and applied to the robot to facilitate the walking operation of the walking assistance robot. In addition, the brain-computer interface technology is applied to perform the operation of the robot using brain waves, spontaneous electrical activities recorded on the human scalp. These two signals were fused to study the walking recognition method of the supporting robot leg.

  • The human-following is one of the significant procedure in human-friendly navigation of mobile robots. There are many approaches of human-following technology. Many approaches have adopted various multiple sensors such as vision system and Laser Range Finder (LRF). In this paper, we propose detection and tracking approaches for human legs by the use of a single LRF. We extract four simple attributes of human legs. To define the boundary of extracted attributes mathematically, we used a Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) scheme. We establish an efficient leg-tracking scheme by exploiting a human walking model to achieve robust tracking under occlusions. The proposed approaches were successfully verified through various experiments.

  • This paper describes a study on posture control of the multi-legged biomimetic underwater robot (CALEB10). Because the underwater environment has a feature that all degrees of freedom are coupled to each other, we designed the posture control algorithm by separating each degree of freedom. Not only should the research on posture control of underwater robots be a precedent study for position control, but it is also necessary to compensate disturbance in each direction. In the research on the yaw directional posture control, we made the drag force generated by the stroke of the left leg and the right leg occur asymmetrically, in order that a rotational moment is generated along the yaw direction. In the composite swimming controller in which the controllers in each direction are combined, we designed the algorithm to determine the control weights in each direction according to the error angle along the yaw direction. The performance of the proposed posture control method is verified by a dynamical simulator and underwater experiments.

  • We developed a new type of human-sized BWR (biped walking robot), named KUBIR1 which is driven by the closed-chain type of actuator. A new type of the closed-chain actuator for the robot is developed, which is composed of the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of 6 D.O.F joints. For front walking, three pitch joints and one roll joint at the ankle. In addition to this, one yaw joint for direction change, and another roll joint for balancing the body are attached. Also, the robot has two D.O.F joints of each hand and three D.O.F. for eye motion. There are three actuating motors for stereo cameras for eyes. In all, a 18 degree-of-freedom robot was developed. KUBIR1 was designed to walk autonomously by adapting small 90W DC motors as the robot actuators and batteries and controllers are on-boarded. The whole weight for Kubir1 is over 90Kg, and height is 167Cm. In the paper, the performance test of KUBIR1 will be shown.

  • This paper introduced how to construct Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters from the Unified Robot Description Format (URDF). URDF is convenient for describing a robot even though the robot is very complex. On the other hand, DH convention is not an easy notation for many novices who want to describe a robot. Therefore, most vendors provide URDF and users prefer to use URDF to describe a robot. However, some controllers or algorithms are based on DH parameters to perform kinematics, dynamics, control, etc. To connect URDF and DH parameters, we present a three-step approach to construct DH parameters from URDF. The first step is to define the joint axis for constructing DH parameters. The second step is constructing DH parameters to define joint character. The final step is constructing DH parameters to define the coordinate frame of the child link. This approach is based on intuitive vector calculation and guarantees the uniqueness of DH parameters. To verify our approach, we applied our approach to a simple one-link robot, a manipulator with 6 DOF, and a quadruped robot with 3 DOF per leg. We verified that our approach worked well based on forward kinematic results.
