  • Nacre of abalone shell features a "brick-and-mortar" microstructure, in which micro-plates of calcium carbonate are bonded by nanometers-thick layers of chitin and proteins. Due to the microstructure and its unique toughening mechanisms, nacre possesses an excellent combination of specific strength, stiffness and toughness. This study deals with the possibility of using nacre fragments obtained from abalone shell for making a bulletproof armor system. A composite plate laminated with abalone shell fragments is made and compression and bend tests are carried out. In addition, a bulletproof test is performed with hybrid armor systems which are composed of an alumina plate, a composite plate, and aramid woven fabric to verify the ballistic performance of nacre. The compressive strength of the composite plate is around 258.3 MPa. The bend strength and modulus of the composite plate decrease according to the plate thickness and are about 149.2 MPa and 50.3 GPa, respectively, for a 4.85 mm thick plate. The hybrid armor system with a planar density of $45.2kg/m^2$, which is composed of an 8 mm thick alumina plate, a 2.4 mm thick composite plate, and 18 layers of aramid woven fabric, satisfy the NIJ Standard 0101.06 : 2008 Armor Type IV. These results show that a composite plate laminated with abalone shell fragments can be used for a bulletproof armor system as an interlayer between ceramic and fabric to decrease the armor system's weight.

  • This paper investigates the change of mechanical properties and thermal shrinkage in commercial multi-filament PET(polyethylene terephthalate) , namely, regular yarn, POY, DTY and composite yarn. To determine changing the effects of processing steps, these were examined at three steps process simulation conditions. The first step is sizing simulation$(S-1\;step\;:\;130^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under 0.1 gf/d load), the second step is scouring simulation$(S-2\;step\;:\;100^\circ{C}\times20\;min$., boiling water treatment under free tension)and final step is setting simulation$(S-3\;step\;:\;180^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under free tension). Regular yarn in multi-step treatment showed higher shrinkage at S-3 step and DTY showed higher in at S-1 step. While POY was relaxed at S-1 step, composite yarn showed different shrinkage properties depending on composite yarn type. Mechanical properties showed good relationship with shrinkage : high shrinkage makes initial modulus decrease and bleating strain increase. It also makes decreasing yield strain and yield stress decrease.

  • A novel balun being the structure of a Wilkinson power divider is suggested and fabricated. One of the power dividing paths in the suggested balun uses a conventional ${\lambda}/4$ transmission line for $-90^{\circ}$ phase shifting, and the other path uses a composite right/left-handed -${\lambda}/4$ transmission line for $+90^{\circ}$ phase shifting with four series capacitors and three parallel inductors. In addition, the suggested balun uses two $50-{\Omega}$ resistors and a conventional $50-{\Omega}$ transmission line of ${\lambda}/2$ electrical length between the two output ports, achieving good isolation and reflection values of two balanced ports. The suggested balun is simulated by the advanced design system simulation program and fabricated on TLX-9 20-mil substrate. The fabricated balun has a very good values of $S_{11}$ = -27.46 dB, $S_{21}$ = -3.40 dB, and $S_{31}$ = -3.28 dB, a phase difference of $-179.5^{\circ}$, a magnitude difference of 0.12 dB, and a delay difference of 0.1 ns, with $S_{22}$ = -36.28 dB, $S_{33}$ = -27.19 dB, and $S_{32}$ = -25.2 dB at 1 GHz, respectively.

  • In this paper, the behaviour of axially loaded partially encased composite columns made with light welded H steel shapes is examined using ABAQUS finite element modelling. The results of the numerical simulations are compared to the response observed in previous experimental studies on that column system. The steel shape of the specimens has transverse links attached to the flanges to improve its local buckling capacity and concrete is poured between the flanges only. The test specimens included 14 stubcolumns with a square cross section ranging from 300 mm to 600 mm in depth. The transverse link spacing varied from 0.5 to 1 times the depth and the width-to-thickness ratio of the flanges ranged from 23 to 35. The numerical model accounted for nonlinear stress-strain behaviour of materials, residual stresses in the steel shape, initial local imperfections of the flanges, and allowed for large rotations in the solution. A Riks displacement controlled strategy was used to carry out the analysis. Plastic analyses on the composite models reproduced accurately the capacity of the specimens, the failure mode, the axial strain at peak load, the transverse stresses in the web, and the axial stresses in the transverse links. The influence of applying a typical construction loading sequence could also be reproduced numerically. A design equation is proposed to determine the axial capacity of this type of column.

  • Ballistic property of Heracron/phenol composites was evaluated as a function of polyurethane (PU) type and their loadings. First, prepregs of phenol and polyurethane were prepared by spray coating on Heracron fabric and then they were utilized to prepare composite by varying their ratio. Next, they were consolidated at $150^{\circ}C$ for 25 min at $150kg/cm^2$ pressure and then ballistic property was measured with 1.1 g FSP (22 cal). V50 was evaluated interms of polyurethane type and ratio of phenol/PU prepreg.

  • The 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer with 75 volume percents PZT was fabricated by the dicing-filling method. The resonance modes of the 1-3 transducer have been studied with electric impedance measurement as a function of frequency. The fundamental frequencies of the planar and thickness mode were observed at 0.95MHz and 1.63MHz respectively, but the lateral mode was not observed. In the thickness mode, the electromechanical coupling coefficient of the 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer, 0.54, was very closed to that of the single phase PZT(0.52). The pulse-echo response by exciting the 1-3 transducer with an electric pulse was observed from the water/reflector interface, and analyzed bandwidth by the spectrum of the impulse response. The quality factor Q for the 1-3 transducer was observed as 1.5 smaller than that of the single phase(80) and then the 1-3 transducer may be used to the broad band type transducer applications.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical studies to evaluate the cyclic behaviour of Circular Reinforced Concrete column Steel beam (CRCS) connections. Two 3/4-scale CRCS specimens are tested under quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. Specimens were strengthened with a tube plate (TP) and a steel doubler plate (SDP). Furthermore; nine interior beam-through type RCS connections are simulated using nonlinear three-dimensional finite element method using ABAQUS software and are verified with experimental results. The results revealed that using the TP improves the performance of the panel zone by providing better confinement to the concrete. Utilizing the TP at the panel zone may absorb and distribute stress in this region. Results demonstrate that TP can be used instead of SDP. Test records indicate that specimens with TP, with and without SDP maintained their maximum strength up to 4% drift angle, satisfying the recommendation given by AISC341-2016 for composite special moment-resisting frames.

  • DBR (distributed Bragg reflectors) PSi (porous silicon) composite films displaying dual optical properties, both optical reflectivity and photoluminescence had been developed. DBR PSi samples were prepared by electrochemical etch of heavily doped $p^{++}-type$ silicon wafers (boron doped, polished on the <100> face, resistivity of $0.8-1.2m{\Omega}-cm$, Siltronix, Inc.). Free-standing DBR PSi films were treated with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) to produce flexible, stable composite materials in which the PSi matrix is covered with PMMA containing photoluminescent polysiloles. Optical characteristics of DBR PSi/polysilole-impregnated PMMA composite materials exhibit both their photonic reflectivity at 565 nm and photoluminescence at 510 nm, simultaneously. A possible application of this materials will be discussed.
