Evaluation of Groundwater Quality Using Factor Aanlyses and Agrochemicals in an Agricultural Area (요인분석과 농약성분 특성에 의한 농업지역의 지하수 수질 평가)

  • This study characterized groundwater quality and the influence of agrochemicals in a part of Ilgwang-Myeon agricultural area in Gijang-Gun, Busan Metropolitan City, using factor analyses. From the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd analyses of groundwater samples, the mean concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, $NO_3\;^-$, $Cl^-$, $SO_4\;^{2-}$, $F^-$, and $SiO_2$ were higher in the 2nd analysis than the other analyses. Pesticide carbofuran and herbicide alachlor were detected at the wells more than a half of all the wells in the 2nd analysis but not in the 4th analysis. This fact may be explained by that a higher precipitation induced higher infiltration rate of contaminants into groundwater during the 2nd survey. According to R- and Q-mode factor analyses, and chemical composition, inorganic constituents excepting $SiO_2$, $HC0_3\;^-$-, and $F^-$ may be influenced by anthropogenic sources (manures, synthetic fertilizers, and domestic wastes), seawater as well as water-mineral interaction. A typical indicator of groundwater contamination, nitrate, exceeds around 4-5 times over the Korean standard for drinking water. Additionally, the influence of seawater diminishes from the seaside to inland.

Membrane Fouling Control Effect of Periodic Water-back-flushing in the Tubular Carbon Ceramic Ultrafiltration System for Recycling Paper Wastewater (제지폐수 재활용을 위한 관형 탄소계 세라믹 한외여과장치에서 물 역세척의 막오염 제어 효과)

  • In this study the discharged wastewater from a paper plant was filtrated by 4 kinds of tubular carbon ceramic ultrafiltration membranes with periodic water-back-flushing. We could investigate effects of watch-back-flushing period, transmembrane pressure (TMP) and flow rate, and find optimal operating conditions. The back-f1ushing time (BT) was fixed at 3 sec, and fi1tration times (FT) werc changed in 15~60 scc, TMP in 1.00~2.50$kg_{f}$/$cm^2$, and the flow rates in 0.27~1.75 L/min. The optimal conditions were discussed in 7he viewpoints of dimensionless permeate flux (J/J$_{0}$), total permeate volume ($V^T$) and resistance of membrane fouling ($R^f$). Optima1 back-flushing period was BT/FT=0.20, suggesting that the frequent back-flushing should decrease membrane fouling. Optimal TMP in the viewpoint of $V^T$ was 1.00~1.55$kg_{f}$/$cm^2$, suggesting that rising TMP should increase membrane fouling and decrease permeate flux. But, rising f1ow rate should decrease membrane fouling and increase permeate flux. Then, average rejection rates of pollutants filtratedby carbon ceramic membranes were 88~98 % for turbidity, 48~72% fort $COD_{cr}$ and 37~76% for TDS.

  • Representative methods for removing spilled oil include mechanical skimming, chemical treatment, burning at the surface of the spilled oil, and microbiological degradation. Among these methods, mechanical skimmer is the most efficient. Mechanical skimming can be classified into the following categories: belt-type, disk-type, weir-type, drum-type. We designed models with a submerged orifice for use in our experiments, for an objective and systematic evaluation of the recovery efficiency of mechanical skimming. Basically, oil is lighter than seawater and hence tends to float on the surface of the latter if there is sufficient time for floating. The present skimmer is kind of wear-type with the submerged orifice for seawater to be squeezed through, minimizing water content in the tank. From the experimental results, we identify the parameters that influence the oil recovery rate and recovery efficiency. The recovery efficiency can be enhanced by increasing the thickness of the oil layer in the first oil accumulative tank.

보호막 내 불순물 확산 방지를 통한 AC PDP 의 방전 효율 개선

  • 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널(PDP)은 공정 절차가 간단하고 가격 경쟁력이 매우 뛰어나 일찌감치 대형 평판 디스플레이 시장을 주도해 왔으며 빠른 응답 속도를 기반으로 한 생생한 화질의 구현으로 3D TV 시장에서도 꾸준한 사랑을 받고 있다. 향후 더 큰 화면을 요구하는 PID(Public Information Display) 시장에서도 PDP 는 두각을 나타낼 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 하지만 PDP 는 여전히 LCD, OLED 등의 디스플레이에 비해 발광 효율이 낮고 소비 전력이 높다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 또한 미국 환경청(EPA)과 에너지부(DOE)가 공동으로 마련한 전자 제품의 효율 등급제인 에너지 스타(Energy Star) 제도가 끊임없이 개편되면서 소비 전력에 대한 규제가 점차 강화되고 있기 때문에 발광 효율 및 소비 전력 특성의 개선은 현재 PDP 업계가 해결해야 할 가장 중요한 과제라고 할 수 있다. 발광 효율의 개선과 관련하여 최근에는 PDP의 보호막으로 널리 쓰이고 있는 MgO 보다 2차 전자 방출 계수가 높아 PDP의 구동 전압을 낮추는 동시에 휘도와 발광 효율 특성을 개선시킬 수 있는 신 보호막에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. MgO를 대체 가능한 신 보호막으로 언급되는 물질은 SrO 혹은 CaO 등이 대표적이다. 하지만 이러한 물질들은 공기 및 수분에 대한 용해도가 높기 때문에 증착된 막이 이후의 공정 과정(합착 및 가열 배기 등)에서 대기 중에 노출 될 경우 심하게 변질될 수 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해서 신 보호막 위에 기존의 MgO 보호막을 얇게 증착하여 공기로부터의 접촉을 차단하거나 펠렛을 제조하는 과정에서 MgO 에 신 보호막 물질을 소량만 첨가하는 등의 방법들이 제안되어 왔으며 그 결과 기존의 PDP 대비 구동 전압을 낮추고 발광 효율을 획기적으로 개선하는데 성공한 결과들이 지속적으로 보고되고 있다. 하지만 신 보호막이 공기 및 수분에 민감한 만큼, 고온의 공정으로 인해 PDP의 하판 유리로부터 상판에 증착된 박막으로 확산되는 불순물에 의해서도 오염되며 이 역시 신 보호막의 특성을 구현하는데 방해 요소로 작용한다. 본 연구에서는 PDP 하판의 불순물이 상판의 박막으로 확산되는 것을 방지하고자 하판 형광체 인쇄전 PECVD 증착법으로 확산 방지막을 1 가량 형성하였다. 이후 SIMS 분석을 통하여 하판 불순물의 확산이 효과적으로 차단됨을 확인하였고 신 보호막의 오염을 최소화하여 결과적으로 PDP의 구동 전압을 낮추고 효율을 획기적으로 개선하는데 기여할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

An Experimental Study on Contaminant Sorption Capacity of Marine Clay and Decomposed Soil (해성점토와 풍화토의 오염물 흡착능에 관한 실험 연구)

  • Batch and column tests were performed to investigate the sorption capacity of bottom soils of Kimpo metropolitan waste landfill. Sorption capacity and sorption isotherm from the batch test for inorganic and heavy metal substances and retardation capacity of heavy metals from the column test are obtained. It was recognized from the tests that the samples match well with Freundlich isotherm and marine clay has good sorption capacity for potassium and heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. The soil samples with different geologic origins did not show significant differences in the sorption capacity of tested components.

Analysis of Foodborne Pathogenic Contamination of Cooked Hams and Sausages in Korean Processing Facilities (가열 햄 및 소시지류 제조공장에서 식중독 세균에 대한 오염 분석)

  • This study was carried out to examine foodborne pathogenic contamination from 1,080 samples of cooked hams and sausages at 10 Korean processing facilities in 2010. The samples were collected from the six primary and additional sterilization products in same lot. To detect Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium perfringens in those products (n=1,080), the domestic standard method for Processing and Ingredients Specification of Livestock Products was used. As a result, Salmonella spp. was not detected in all 636 ham and 444 sausage samples. However, L. monocytogenes was detected in four (0.6%) ham and eight (1.8%) sausage samples from five manufactures. S. aureus was also only detected in 4 (0.6%) ham samples from two manufacturers, and C. perfringens was detected in 3 (0.5%) ham samples from three manufacturers, the contamination levels of these pathogens were less than 100 CFU/g. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that the additional sterilization step of processing manufacturers could not assist to control the foodborne pathogenic bacteria.

Potential of Contaminant Removal Using a Full-Scale Municipal Water Treatment System with Adsorption as Post-Treatment (실 규모 물 처리 공정 및 후속 흡착 처리에 의한 오염원 제거 잠재성 평가)

  • This study aimed to assess the efficacy of an adsorption process in removing organic matter and micropollutant residuals. After a full-scale water circulation system, the adsorption process was considered a post-treatment step. The system, treating anthropogenically impacted surface waters, comprises a hydro-cyclone, coagulation, flocculation, and dissolved air flotation unit. While the system generally maintained stable and satisfactory effluent quality standards over months, it did not meet the highest standard for organic matter (as determined by chemical oxygen demands). Adsorption experiments utilized two granular activated carbon types, GAC 830 and GCN 830, derived from coal and coconut-shell feedstocks, respectively. The assessment encompassed organic materials along with two notable micropollutants: acetaminophen (APAP) and acid orange 7 (AO7). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments were conducted to determine adsorption rates and maximum adsorption amounts. The quantitative findings derived from pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models suggest the effectiveness of the adsorption process. The findings of this study propose the potential of employing the adsorption process as a post-treatment to enhance the treatment of contaminants that are not satisfactorily treated by conventional water circulation systems. This enhancement is crucial for ensuring the sustainability of urban water cycles.

  • 최근 농업분야에 있어 ICT(Information and Communications Technology)기술을 접목하여 농/축산물 및 식품의 생산, 유통, 판매, 소비 전주기 프로세스에 대한 생산성, 안전성, 경제성 및 품질 향상과 각 단계의 활동 주체(생산, 유통, 소비)들 간에 상생의 생태계 구축을 위한 스마트농업 기술이 대두되고 있다. 이 스마트농업 기술은 농업 가치사슬 전반에 걸쳐 IT(Information Technology)와의 접목을 통해 1차 산업인 농업을 6차 산업으로 발전시킴으로써, 고기능, 고효율화는 물론, 부가가치 제고, 생산비 절감, 환경오염 최소화, 농촌생활의 편리성 증대로 지속 가능한 농업을 구현할 수 있을 것으로 기대되는 기술이다. 본고에서는 스마트농업 기술에 관한 배경, 정책 및 시장동향, 기술 및 표준화동향을 제시하고 향후 지속적인 발전을 위한 스마트농업에 관한 표준화 정책을 제언한다.

Permeability Characteristics of Geosynthetics Vertical Barrier Connections for the Prevention of Contaminants Diffusion (오염물질 확산방지를 위한 토목섬유 연직차수벽 연결부의 투수성능 평가)

  • Purpose: In this study, we used hydrophilic waterstop used in geosynthetics vertical barrier system to evaluate the performance of impermeability under sealing conditions. Method: ASTM D5887 and ASTM D6766 were applied to determine the capability of the connection during the geosynthetics vertical barrier system. Hydrophilic waterstop was saturated in each solution and the weight, thickness, and volume changes were analyzed over elapsed time. Hydrophilic waterstop was installed at the geosynthetics vertical barrier system connection to evaluate the permeability characteristics. Results: As the expansion reaction time of hydrophilic waterstop increased relatively under saline conditions, the decrease in permeability also showed a smaller decrease in fresh water. Furthermore, the method of engagement of the geosynthetics vertical barrier system showed somewhat better performance of the impermeability due to the large pressure resistance caused by the roll joint type than interlock type. Conclusion: In urban pollutants, which can estimate the outflow of pollutants such as oil storage facilities and industrial complexes, proactive response technologies that can prevent the contaminant diffusion can significantly reduce the damage.

Chemical Cleaning of Iron Stains on Ceramics (화학세척제를 이용한 도자기의 철산화물 제거 특성 연구)

  • To remove metal stains of the ceramics, chemical cleaning is essential case by case. This study investigated the removal characteristics of iron stains by oxalic acid and citric acid including their application methods of soaking and poultice. The soaking method in cleaning agents showed removal process by color difference and released iron contents from iron stains on ceramics. Iron stains were removed successfully from ceramics, which soaked in oxalic acid for 60 hours. However, it is recommendable to soak in 0.25M oxalic acid for one to three hours because most iron stains were disappeared in 3 hours soaking. Citric acid is less effective than oxalic acid in removing iron stains because of heavy molecular weight and low acidity. Poultices (bentonite, sepiolite, activated carbon fiber and celite) with oxalic acid were applied on contaminated ceramics. After ten hours, iron stains on ceramics were removed successfully by poultice. Among them, bentonite and sepiolite have better application. Therefore, sepiolite with 0.25M oxalic acid was applied on the iron stains of whiteware and celadon from Ma Island, and then stains were removed. However, it is judged that the application methods can be varied according to the form and depth of contaminant. In addition, the residues of poultice on the ceramics will be considered for preventing contamination.
