  • This paper is concentrated on map generalization in digital environment for automated multi-scale map pro-duction using conventional hardcopy maps. Line generalization is urgently required process to prepare small scale digital map database when large scale map databases are available. This paper outlines a new approach to the line generalization when preparing small scale map on the basis of existing large scale distal map. Line generalizations are conducted based on zero-crossing algorithm using six sheets of 115,000 scale YEOSU area which produced by National Geographic Institute. The results are compared to Douglas-Peucker algorithm and manual method. The study gives full details of the data reduction rates and alternatives based on the proposed algorithm.

  • It is very important to assess spatial data quality of a digital map produced through digital map generalization. In this study, as a aspect of spatial data quality maintenance, we examined the tolerate range of theoretical expectation accuracy and established the quality assessment standard in spatial data for the transformed digital map data do not act contrary to the digital map specifications and the digital map accuracy of the relational scale. And, transforming large scale digital map to small scale, if we reduce complexity through processes as simplification, smoothing, refinement and so on., the spatial position change may be always happened. thus, because it is very difficult to analyse the spatial accuracy of the transformed position, we used the buffering as assessment method of spatial accuracy in digital map generalization procedure. Although the tolerated range of generic positioning error for l/l, 000 and l/5, 000 scale is determined based on related law, because the algorithms adapted to each processing elements have different property each other, if we don't determine the suitable parameter and tolerance, we will not satisfy the result after generalization procedure with tolerated range of positioning error. The results of this study test which is about the parameters of each algorithm based on tolerated range showed that the parameter of the simplification algorithm and the positional accuracy are 0.2617 m, 0.4617 m respectively.

  • In the recent day, the necessity and the effective usage are increased rapidly, and it is applied in many other fields as well as in the field of ortho-photo map. In this study, we extract each objects on the aerial image and automatically classify graphic information to produce digital map using only digital ortho-image without particular drawing devices for producing digital map. For this purpose, we have applied a lot of the image processing techniques and fuzzy theory, classified outline and lane of road and building, and had each layer according to each feature. Especially, in the case of the building, the outer vector lines extracted by pixel unit at the building were very complex, but we have developed the program to be expressed by I-dimensional linear type between building corners. In the result of this study, we could not extract and recognize all of the object on the image all together, but we have got the error within 50cm using semi-automatic technique. Therefore, this method will be used effectively in producing 1/5,000 digital map.

  • In recent years, the 1 : 5,000 scale Digital National Basemap(DNB) has been generated under National Geo-graphic Information System(NGIS) Project. The DNB database generated will be the backdrop data for thematic maps, underground facilities maps and so on. The DNB database will be distributed to the government and private sectors in near future so that it should meet the requirements as the basic data. In order to assure the quality of DNB database, the establishment of quality assurance process to database was in great need. In this study, we were mainly concerned with improving the quality of digital national basemap database in geomatric aspect as well as the processing time due to the amount of digital data generated. As a results of this study, the quality assuance process of DNB database is established and automatic quality assurance program is developed. Also, the program developed in this study is contributed to quality assurance of DNB database as well as economic aspects.

  • KOMPSAT-2 is the seventh high-resolution image satellite in the world that provides both 1m-grade panchromatic images of the GSD and 4m-grade multispectral images of the GSD. It's anticipated to be used across many different areas including mapping, territory monitoring and environmental watch. However, due to the complexity and security concern involved with the use of the MSC, the use of KOMPSAT-2 images are limited in terms of geometric images, such as satellite orbits and detailed mapping information. Therefore, this study aims to produce DEM and orthoimage by using the stereo images of KOMPSAT-2, and to explore the applicability of geo-spatial information with KOMPSAT -2. Orientation interpretations were essential for the production of DEM and orthoimage using KOMPSAT-2 images. In the study, they are performed by utilizing both RPC and GCP. In this study, the orientation interpretations are followed by the generation of DEM and orthoimage, and the analysis of their accuracy based on a 1:5,000 digital map. The accuracy analysis of DEM is performed and the results indicate that their altitudes are, in general, higher than those obtained from the digital map. The altitude discrepancies on plains, hills and mountains are calculated as 1.8m, 7.2m, and 11.9m, respectively. In this study, the mean differences between horizontal position between the orthoimage data and the digital map data are found to be ${\pm}3.081m$, which is in the range of ${\pm}3.5m$, within the permitted limit of a 1:5,000 digital map. KOMPSAT-2 images are used to produce DEM and orthoimage in this research. The results suggest that DEM can be adequately used to produce digital maps under 1:5,000 scale.

  • Korea Water Resources Corporation carried out LiDAR survey to construct detailed terrain data for flood mapping and it is expected that much money is required in flood mapping of all over the country. Therefore, it is desirable to use NGIS digital map to construct preliminary modelling data for selection of flood mapping area. And the analysis of DEM error with respect to scale of digital map is necessary for the sake of applying digital map as the input data of flood mapping. We compared DEM from digital map with DEM from LiDAR survey. Especially we analyzed DEM error characteristics that is occurred with respect to the interpolation method that is used to construct DEM from TIN of digital map. As a result of analysis, digital map(1:1,000) showed smaller error than digital map(1:5,000) and DEM applying linear interpolation showed smaller error than DEM applying quintic interpolation. Especially, variation of DEM error by cell resolution was evaluated as very slight because urban district was composed of gentle slope.

  • The Korean government is developing a systematic plan of integrated coastal management for effective conservation, utilization, and development of coastal areas. For this plan, integrated maps of land maps and nautical charts are indispensable. However, these maps are not made, nor studied yet in terms of integration, although digital maps(DM) on land and electronic nautical charts(ENC) have been recently developed by Korean Geography Institute and National Marine Investigation Institute, respectively. In this study, as preliminary studies to make eventual integrated maps, the concept of coastal areas are defined, specifically, coastal lines from DM and ENC are matched against each other. Issues on map production procedures, coordinate systems, and map projections, are carefully considered. A test coastal area located in Seo-Gu, Pusan, over 14 km of coastal lines is selected for the edge matching of coastal lines. RMS differences are 13.83 m and 4.37 m over man-made coastal lines and natural coast lines, respectively, which are quite larger considering a scale difference and other factors. However, no systematic differences are found.
