  • Two groups of juvenile flounders (90 g/each) were fed on moist pellet feed thrice a day for a period of 8 weeks; the first group, reared in 4 circular (6m $\times$ 0.8 m) tanks (1200 flounders/tank), was fed daily (ED) and the second one on alternate days (EO). There was no significant difference in growth and feed conversion ratio (FCR) between these groups. There was also no difference in chemical composition, except in lipid, which was significantly higher (4.1%) in the ED group than the EO group (3.4%). Food intake and gain in the whole body nitrogen (N) were higher in the ED group but there was no significant difference between these groups in N retention; they excreted almost equal amount (114 vs 112 g) of N. Although phosphorus intake was significantly different between these groups, the flounders retained equal amount (0.5 g) of P in their body and excreted also equal amount (27.6 vs 26.0 g/kg weight gain) of p. Energy intake (2528 kJ) of the ED group was higher than that (2116 kJ) of the EO group. However, there was no significant difference in their energy retention efficiency. Clearly, alternate day feeding regimen led to more efficient utilization of food by the juvenile flounder.

  • This study investigated the behavior of sediment bars in a compound channel with a drop structure. Flow was separated into side banks by alternate bars, and flow was concentrated into the downstream of bar fronts. The bed downstream of a drop structure degradated due to the concentrated flow from it. Bar shapes were kept by the influence of their shapes upstream. Alternate bars, central bars, and multiple bars were developed as the width to depth ratio increased, and the number of bars increased. The bar in the downstream of a drop structure decreased in length due to the concentration of flow and its disturbance.

  • In this paper the progressive collapse potential of building structures designed for real construction projects were evaluated based on arbitrary column removal scenario using various alternate path methods specified in the GSA guidelines. The analysis model structures are a 22-story reinforced concrete moment frames with core wall building and a 44-story interior concrete core and exterior steel diagrid structure. The progressive collapse resisting capacities of the model structures were evaluated using the linear static, nonlinear static, and nonlinear dynamic analyses. The linear static analysis results showed that progressive collapse occurred in the 22-story model structure when an interior column was removed. However the structure turned out to be safe according to the nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Similar results were observed in the 44-story diagrid structure. Based on the analysis results, it was concluded that, compared with nonlinear analysis procedures, the linear static method is conservative in the prediction of progressive collapse resisting capacity of building structure based on arbitrary column removal scenario.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the changes of total WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocite, eosinophil in the horses'blood of 3 groups which randomly assigned 3 heads to each group. In group A(daily therapy), each horse was iniected, intramuscularly, 100 mg of prednisolone acetate/day for 3 days, consecutively. In group B(alternate-day therapy), each horse was injected, 100 mg of prednisolone acetate/day 4 times on alternate days, intramuscularly. In control group, each horse was injected, intramuscularly, the equivalent volumes/day of saline solution fur 3 days, consecutively. The results were summarized as fellows: 1. Total WBC counts in group A rapidly increased until day 4th, which the counts reached the $maximum(13.10{\pm}0.13{\times}10^{3}/{\mu}l$)(p<0.05), and decreased into control group range until day loth. In group B rapidly increased until day 1st, and gradually increased until day 71% which the counts reached the maximum ($12f3{\pm} 0.20$)0<0.05), and decreased into control group range until day 16th. 2. Neutrophil counts in group A rapidly increased until day 4HL which the coun% reached the maxi um($10.85{\pm} 0.08$)0<0.05), and decreased into control group range until day loth. In group B rapidly increased until day 1st and slowly increased until day 7th, which the counts reached the maximum$(9.76{\pm}0.22)0<0.05)$, and decreased into control group range until day 16th. 3. Lymphocyte counts in group A and B rapidly decreased until day 4th, which the counts reached the minimum(2.14{\pm}0.12 and 2.09{\pm}0.20$, respectively) (p<0.05), and increased into control group range until day 10th. Group A and B, however, had no significant effects each other on Iymphocyte counts during the study. 4. Monocite and eosinophil counts in group A and B remained in the range of control group during the study. Eosinophil in group A and B slightly decreased on day 4th, significantly%<0.05), but we could not generally be reliable the result because of severe standard deviations. In conclusion, we fecund that group A had more rapidly increase and decrease than group B on hematologic counts of WBC, but group B had longer period than group A on the hematologic effects of WBC, and found not differences between daily therapy and alternate-day therapy.

  • Objective: To evaluate and compare a series of volume changes in the nasal cavity (NC), nasopharynx, oropharynx, and maxillary sinuses (MS) in growing Class III patients after either rapid palatal expansion (RPE) or alternate rapid maxillary expansion and constriction (Alt-RAMEC) followed by facemask (FM) therapy, by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: Forty growing Class III patients were retrospectively selected and divided into two matched groups: RPE/FM (14 females, 6 males; mean age, 9.66 ± 1.23 years) and Alt-RAMEC/FM groups (14 females, 6 males; mean age, 10.28 ± 1.45 years). The anteroposterior and vertical displacements of Point A, the volumes of the NC, nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and MS were measured at different time points: pretreatment (T1), postexpansion (T2), and postprotraction (T3). Results: Both groups demonstrated significant maxilla advancement (by 1.3 mm) during expansion, with a statistically significant intergroup difference during protraction (RPE/FM, 1.1 mm; Alt-RAMEC/FM, 2.4 mm; p < 0.05) and throughout the treatment (RPE/FM, 2.4 mm; Alt-RAMEC/FM, 3.7 mm; p < 0.05). NC and nasopharyngeal airway volumes increased significantly in both groups after expansion, protraction, and treatment. The oropharyngeal and MS volumes increased in both groups after protraction and post-treatment. However, no volumetric differences were observed between the two groups. Conclusions: There was no significant difference in airway volume changes, including NC, nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal airway, and MS, between RPE/FM and Alt-RAMEC/FM groups at different time points. Although there was significantly more forward movement after protraction in the Alt-RAMEC/FM group, the difference was deemed too small to be clinically relevant.

  • Two novel calixarene-based fluoroionophores were synthesized. Their conformations were confirmed to 1,3-alternate by X-ray crystal structures. From CHEF by blocking the PET mechanism in fluorescence spectra, we observed $In^{3+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ selectivity over other metal ions. For $In^{3+}$ion, calix[4]-bis-azacrown-5 showed about 20 times more sensitive than calix[4]-mono-azacrown-5 because the source of the binding selectivity comes from the calixarene framework and azacrown ligand by controlling the fluorescence and PET mechanisms as-sociated with the amine moiety.

  • A silane dendrimer with 48 allylic end groups has been synthesized in excellent yield, via repetitive alkenylation-hydrosilation cycles. Starting with hexaallylethylenedisilane ((CH2=CHCH2)3SiCH2)2 as the core molecule (G0), a succession of alternate platinum catalyzed hydrosilation (Pt/C, 10% platinum content on active carbon) of all allyl groups with methyldichlorosilane and the allylation of all SiCl2 groups with allylmagnesium bromide in THF provided 3rd generation (G3) as carbosilane dendrimer. All the generations of dendrimer have been characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis.

  • Neural regulation of phenylethanolamine N-meth-yltransferase (PNMT) was studied with reserpine as a neuronal agent in rat adrenal medulla. The enzyme activity assay and northern blot analysis were performed to determine whether the induction of PNMT activity after reserpine treatment was associated with elevation of mRNA coding for PNMT. The i.p. administration of reserpine (2.5 mg/kg) on alternate days fot 4 injections to rats brought about 30% increase of adrenal medullary PNMT activity and approximately 60% stimulation of the PNMT mRNA level in rat adrenal gland. A dose of 10 mg/kg of reserpine was chosen to perform optimum induction of PNMT activity in the rat adrenal gland based on the results of dose response curve of reserpine. Time course reserpine (10 mg/kg) effects on the rat adrenal medullary PNMT were as follows: 1. Peripheral PNMT activity reached maximum level after 7 days of drug treatment on alternate days. 2. Trans-synaptic stimulation by reserpine increased pretranslational activity of rat adrenal PNMT, but not translational activity. 3. Immunotitration of PNMT molecule after reserpine treatment indicated that reserpine produced an enzyme with greater antibody affinity than endogenous molecule in the rat adrenal gland.

  • The regular RC structures have been transformed into irregular RC structures by alternate load of RC structures during explosive demolition. Numerical simulation programs have contributed to a better understanding of large displacement collapse behavior during explosive demolition, but there remain a number of problems which need to be solved. In this study, the 1/5 scaled 1, 3 and 5 stories RC structures were designed and fabricated. To consider the collapse possibility of upper dead load, fabricated RC structures were demolished by means of felling method. To observe the collapse behavior of the RC structures during felling, displacement of X-direction (or horizontal), displacement of Z-direction (or vertical) md relative displacement angle from respective RC structures were analyzed. Finally explosive demolition on the scaled RC structures using felling method are carried out, collapse behavior by felling method is affected by upper dead load of scaled RC structures. Displacement of X and Z direction increases gradually to respective 67ms and 300ms after blasting. It is confirmed that initial collapse velocity due to alternate load has a higher 3 stories RC structures than 5 stories.
