  • The polymeric compound [{$W(NO)_2Cl_2$}$_n$] were prepared by reductive nitrosylation of $WNaNO_2$ and acidified $WFeSO_4$ with $WWCl_6$ at room temperature. The reactions of [{$W(NO)_2Cl_2$}$_n$] with unidentate and bidentate ligands afforded neutral monomeric [$W(NO)_2Cl_2L_2$(or L-L)] in a relative high yields (70$\sim$90%). 3,5-lutidine, ${\gamma}$-cyanopyridine, 1,2-phenylenediamine, 1,10-phenanthroline, sym-diphenylethylenediamine, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene and 8-hydroxyquinoline were used as coordinating ligands. These dinitrosyltungsten complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, $^1H$-NMR, infrared, and UV-visible spectroscopy are reported. The spectral data indicated that geometric structures of the products were cis-dinitrosyl-trans-dichloro-cis-$L_2$ of $C_{2v}$ symmetry.

  • The reaction of $LnCl_3{\cdot}7H_2O$ [Ln = La (1), Ce (2)] with salicylic acid (HL) and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) at $20^{\circ}C$ in $H_2O$/ethanol gave after work-up and recrystallization two novel lanthanide complexes with general formula $[Ln(Phen)_2(L)_3(HL)]{\cdot}H_2O$. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, TGA, CHN as well as by X-ray analysis. According to these results, compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and contain $Ln^{3+}$ ions with coordination number nine. Complexes 1 and 2 consist of two Phen, one neutral HL and three L anions (two L anions act as monodentate ligands and the third one is chelating to $Ln^{3+}$). Thermal decomposition led to primary loss of the Phen molecules. Then HL molecules and finally L moieties left the material to give $Ln_2O_3$.

  • We report the preparation and characterization of a new and water soluble complex of palladium(II) with 1,10- phenanthroline and butyldithiocarbamate ligands. This compound has been studied through spectroscopic techniques, $^1H$ NMR, IR, electronic spectra and elemental analysis and conductivity measurements. The complex shows 50% cytotoxic concentration ($Ic_{50}$) value against chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, K562, much lower than that of cisplatin. Thus the mode of binding of this complex to calf thymus DNA have been extensively investigated by isothermal titration UV-visible spectrophotometry, fluorescence, gel filteration and other methods. UV-visible studies show that the complex exhibits cooperative binding with DNA and remarkably denatures the DNA at extremely low concentration ($~13\;{\mu}M$). Fluorescence studies indicate that the complex intercalate into DNA. Gel filtration studies suggest that the binding of Pd(II) complex with DNA is strong enough that it does not readily break. In these interaction studies, several thermodynamic and binding parameters are also determined which may reflect the mechanism of action of this type of compound with DNA.

  • The neutral monomeric compounds $[Mo(NO)_2Cl_2(phen)]$ and $[W(NO)_2Cl_2(phen)]$ (phen= 1,10-phenanthroline) have been prepared by reactions of polymeric compounds $[{Mo(NO)_2Cl_2}n],\;[{W(NO)_2Cl_2}n]$ with chelate ligands. Additions of one equivalent of silver(I) perchlorate to these cis-dinitrosyl compounds in acetone solution produce $[Mo(NO)_2(phen)(S)Cl][ClO_4]\;and\;[W(NO)_2(phen)(S)Cl][ClO_4]$ (S = acetone). The homo- and hetero-dinuclear complexes, $[Cl(phen)(NO)_2M(pyz)M'(NO)_2(phen)Cl][ClO_4]_2$ (M = Mo, W) and $[Cl(phen)(NO)_2M(pyz)M'(NO)_2(phen)Cl][C1O_4]_2$ (M = Mo, M' = W) have been prepared by these monocationic complexes with pyrazine ligand respectively. These complexes characterized by elemental analysis, $1^H-\;and\;^{13}C-NMR$, infrared, and UV-visible spectroscopy are reported. The spectral data indicate that homo- and hetero-dinuclear complexes were symmetrical structures of $C_{2v}$.

  • A new complex [$Ni(phen)(C_9H_8Br_2NO_3)_2{\cdot}2CH_3OH{\cdot}2H_2O$] [phen: 1,10-phenanthroline $C_9H_8Br_2NO_3$: 3,5-dibromo-L-tyrosine] was synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray crystallography shows that Ni(II) ion is six-coordinated. The Ni(II) ion coordinates with four nitrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms from three ligands, forming a mononuclear Ni(II) complex. The crystal crystallizes in the Orthorhombic system, space group $P2_12_12$ with a = 12.9546 ${\AA}$, b = 14.9822 ${\AA}$, c = 9.9705 ${\AA}$, V = 1935.2 ${\AA}$, Z = 1, F(000) = 1008, S = 0.969, ${\rho}_{calcd}=1.742g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, ${\mu}=4.688mm^{-1}$, $R_1$ = 0.0529 and $wR_2$ = 0.0738 for 3424 observed reflections (I > $2{\sigma}(I)$). Theoretical study of the title complex was carried out by density functional theory (DFT) method and the B3LYP method employing the $6-3l+G^*$ basis set. The energy gap between HOMO and LUMO indicates that this complex is prone to interact with DNA. CCDC: 908041.

  • Some mononuclear oxovanadium(IV) complexes having the general formula [VOL(bidentate)] (1-4) of which L is tridentate ONS-donor salicylaldehyde S-methyldithiocarbazate (sal-mdtc$^{2-}$) or salicylaldehyde 4- phenylthiosemicarbazate (sal-phtsc$^{2-}$) and bidentate stands for 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) have been synthesized. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, FAB mass, UV, IR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Two of the complexes [VO(sal-mdtc)(bpy)] (1) and [VO(sal-mdtc) (phen)] (2) were crystallographically characterized. The structures revealed that vanadium atom is octahedrally coordinated by the O, N, and S donor atoms of the tridentate ligand, the two N atoms of bidentate ligand, and the oxo atom. The oxygen donor, occupying an apical position has a trans-labilizing effect, resulting in elongation of the V-N bond. The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes exhibited one cathodic response in the range −d1.45 $\sim$ −f1.52 V due to the reduction of V(IV) to V(III).

  • The Mo(V) $di-{\mu}-oxo$ type $[Mo_2O_4(H_2O)_2L]Cl_2$ complexes(L: 4,4'-Diphenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, 4,4'-Dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, 4,7-Diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) have been prepared by the reaction of $[Mo_2O_4(H_2O)_6]^{2+}$ with a series of chelate ligands. These complexes are completed by two terminal oxygens arranged trans to one another and each ligand forms a chelate types. In $Mo_2O_4(H_2O)_2L$ two $H_2O$ coordinated at trans site of terminal oxgens. The prepared complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, electronic spectra, $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, and thermal analysis(TG-DTA). In the potential range -0.00V to -1.00V at scan rate of $50mVs^{-1}$, a cathodic peak at -0.83V ${\sim}$ -0.88V (vs SCE) and an anodic peak at -0.54V ${\sim}$ -0.88V (vs SCE) have been observed in aquous solution. The ratio of the cathodic to anodic current(Ipc/Ipa) is almost 2, we infer that redox is irreversible as dimer forms broken.

  • Direction of intercalation to DNA of the planar dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine ligands (dppz) of a bis-Ru(II) complex namely, $[Ru(1,10-phenanthroline)_2dipyrido[3,2-a:2^{\prime},3^{\prime}-c]phenazine]^{2+}$ linkered by a 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane, was investigated by probing the behavior of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) that bound deep in the minor groove. Bis-intercalation of DPPZ resulted in a little blue shift and hyperchromism in DAPI absorption band, and a large decrease in DAPI fluorescence intensity which accompined by an increase in the dppz emission intensity. Diminishing the intenisty of the positive induced circular dichroism (CD) and linear dichroism (LD) were also observed. These spectral changes indicated that insertion of dppz ligand caused the change of the binding mode of DAPI, which probably moved to the exterior of DNA from the minor groove and interacted with the phospghate groups of DNA by electrostatic interaction. At the surface of DNA, DAPI binds at the phosphate groups of DNA by electrostatic attraction. Consequently, this observation indicated that the dppz ligand intercalated from the minor groove.

  • Two novel binuclear metal-organic coordination complexes $[Cd_2(L)_2(bpy)_2(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}6H_2O$ (1), $[Cd_2(L)_2(phen)_2-(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}2H_2O$ (2) (where L = 2-methylquinoline-3,4-dicarboxylate dianion, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal Xray diffraction, spectral method (IR), elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Both 1 and 2 consist of two Cd(II) atoms bridged by two monoatomic bridging carboxylate groups from two L ligands, and the second carboxylate group of each L is monodentately coordinated to Cd(II), creating a sevenmembered chelating ring. The coordination at each metal nucleus is completed by a water molecule and a chelating bidentate molecule. The 3D structures of the complexes are stabilized by ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions and hydrogen-bonds.

  • A novel zinc complex, Zn(phen)q, was synthesized from 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (q) as organic ligands and its electroluminescent (EL) properties were characterized. The structure of Zn(phen)q was elucidated by FT-IR, UV-Vis and XPS. The complex Zn(phen)q showed thermal stability up to $300^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen flow, which was measured by TGA and DSC. The photoluminescence (PL) of the Zn(phen)q was measured from the THF solution and the solid film on quartz substrate. The PL emission of Zn(phen)q exhibited green light centered at about 505nm. The EL devices were fabricated by the vacuum deposition. The EL devices having the structure of ITO/a-NPD/Zn(phen)q/Li:Al were studied, where 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]biphenyl(a-NPD) used as a hole transport layer(HTL). a-NPD has high Tg of $96^{\circ}C$ and thus makes the device thermally stable. The EL emission of Zn(phen)q exhibited also green light centered at 532nm.
