A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric assay method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of benzidine (BZ), N-acetyl benzidine (ABZ) and N,N-diacetyl benzidine (DABZ) in rat urine. BZ, ABZ and DABZ were extracted from urine at pH 8 with ethyl ether. Conjugated urinary metabolites were extracted at pH 8 after hydrolysis with 1 M HCl for 30 min at 100 $^{\circ}C.$ The dried extract was dissolved in 100 ${\mu}{\ell}$ of ethylacetate and then injected in gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) system without further purification or modification. BZ, ABZ and DABZ have good chromatographic properties and offer very sensitive response for the EI-MS (SIM) without any derivatization. The recoveries for BZ, ABZ and DABZ were about 98.0, 81.8 and 71.4%, respectively, at pH 8.0 and the concentration of 5.0 ng/mL. The coefficients of variation of BZ and ABZ were less than 9.5% from 0.1 to 100 ng/mL and that of DABZ was less than 13% in the same concentration range. The detection limits of the assay were 0.01 ng/mL for both BZ and ABZ, and 0.05 ng/mL for DABZ in urine or plasma 1.0 mL.
Chemical analyzes were carried out the samples from roadsides of the Gwangju city. The purpose of this research is to investigate the concentrations and distribution patterns of heavy metals due to urbanization and industrialization in the Gwangju city This study area is not significantly contaminated based on the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn. However, the concentrations of the chemical elements analyzed are locally higher than those of serious contamination level indicated by Ministry of environment. The dust pH is in the rage of 5.60-7.09 and was generally neutral, and there are no difference in pollution area and nonpollution area. Chemical analyses utilized are dilution by 0.1N HCl. In result of analysis by the method using 0.1N HCl, concentrations of Cd and Cu are a little high in Gwangchondong of Seo-Gu. Concentrations of Mn and Pb are a little high in Buk-Gu and Nam-gu, and Concentrations of Zn are generally higher than average of soils. Zn, in the study area, keeps polluting greatly as Zn concentration of average is 150.9ppm. All of P.I values are lower than 1, it means heavy metal pollution is not serious.

Orthophosphate crystals were grown by the hydrothermal method and the properties of grown crystals were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction. Vickers hardness tester, etc. The starting powders of $AIPO_4 and GaPO_4 $were prepared as a single phase by the solid state reaction of stoichiometric mixture of $AI_2O_3 or Ga_2O_3$ and $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and the subsequently by the hydrothermal treatment. The hydrothermal conditions for high growth rates of the orthophosphate crystals are as follows: $AlPO_4$ crystal; temperature ranges, between $170$~$200^{\circ}C$; temperatures difference, $15$~$20^{\circ}C;$, hydrothermal solvent, 4m HCl, $GaPO_4 crystal; temperature ranges, between $210 and 240^{\circ}C;$; temperature difference, $25$~$30^{\circ}C; $, hydrothermal solvent, 4m HCl. Morphologies of grown crystals tended to be bounded by (1010), (1011) and (0111) faces at low temperatures, and grew with well developed (0001) faces by increasing the growth temperature. On the other hand, the properties of orthophosphate crystals $(AlPO_4/GaPO_4)$ were as follows: lattice parameters (nm); a=0.494, c=1.094/a=0.490, c=1.105, density (gcm-3); 2.62/3.56, Vickers hardness (Nm^2); $1.02{\times}10^1^0/7.06{\times}10^9$, refractive indices; $ne=1.529{\pm}0.003, no=1.519{\pm}0.003/ne=1.611{\pm}0.006, no=1.599{\pm}0.006, birefringence; {\pm}0.01/{\pm}0.012$, dielectric constant (Fm-1); 6/7.
1. Almost complete death of pitch pine seeds resulted when presoaked in 0.5 per cent ethyleneimine solution without neutralization. When neutralized with 1 N HCL, quite high germination percentages were obtained even with 2 per cent solution. 2. When presoaked in 0.25 or 0.50 per cent ethyl methanesulphonate, there was a delay in germination, but the germination per cent rapidly increased from about the 10 th day from sowing. 3. Basing upon the time when the germinative energy of control seeds was reached, the comparative lethal doses (concentrations) among mutagenic chemicals and radiations were investigated (Table 1).
Heavy metals are extracted from Chonju stream sediment, roadside soils and sediments along Honam expressway, soils and tailings from mining area using three different methods (partial extraction in Standard Method, partial extraction method with maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution and Sequential Extraction Method). In samples having buffer capacity against acid, pH 1 (0.1 N HCl) of extraction solution can not be maintained and pH of extraction solution increases up to 8.0 when partial extraction in Standard Method is used. The averages and ranges of HPE(heavy metals extracted using partial extraction in Standard Method)/HPEM(heavy metals extracted using partial extraction method with maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution) values are 0.479 and 0.145~0.929 for Cd, 0.534 and 0.078~0.928 for Zn, 0.432 and 0.041~0.992 for Mn, 0.359 and 0.011~0.874 for Cu, 0.150 and 0.018~0.530 for Cr, 0.219 and 0.003~0.853 for Pb, and 0.088 and 1.73${\times}$10$^{-5}$~0.303 for Fe. These data indicate that the difference between HPE and HPEM is large in the order of Fe, Cr, Pb, Cu, Mn, Cd and Zn. The amounts of heavy metals extracted decreases in the follow order; Sum III(sum of fraction I, II, III in sequential extraction)>HPEM>Sum III (sum of fraction I and II)>HPE for Zn, Cd and Mn and Sum III>HPEM>HPE for Cr and Fe. In the case Cr, Sum II is lower than HPEM and higher than HPE. In case of Cu, extracted heavy metals is large in the order Sum IV>HPEM>Sum III HPE. HPE/HPEM value decreases with increasing the amount of HCl used for maintaining 0.1 N of extraction solution. For samples with high buffer capacity, HPE/HPEM value in all elements is lower than 0.2. On the other hand, for samples with low buffer capacity, HPE/HPEM value are over 0.2 and many samples have values higher than 0.6 for Zn, Cd Mn and Cu due to the small difference between Sum II and Sum III, and relatively higher mobility. However, for Fe and Cr, HPE/HPEM value is below 0.2 even for samples with low buffer capacity due to their low mobility and big difference between Sum II and Sum III. This study indicates that the partial extraction method in Korean Standard Method of soil is not suitable for an assessment of soil contamination in area where buffer capacity of soil can be decreased or lost because of a long term exposure to environmental damage such as acidic rain.
The ion exchange behaviour of the $Cs^{+1},\;Sr^{+2},\;and\;Th^{+4}$ in the system of $Cs^{+1},\;Sr^{+2},\;Th^{+4},\;and\;7Cl^{-}-H^{+}$ from Dowex HCR-W2, was examined in the loading and elution processes. $Th^{+4}$ was slowly adsorbed through the entire contact time between resin and solution and $Cs^{+1}\;and\;Sr^{2+}$ were adsorbed fast for the first few minutes of contact time. Because of the strong affinity of $Th^{+4}$, the longer contact time was allowed, the less amount of $Cs^{+1}\;and\;Sr^{2+}$ was adsorbed on the resin. The peak concentration of the resin phase $Cs^{+1}$ in the solution concentration of $Cs^{+1}:Sr^{+2}:Th^{+4}$ in the ratio of 2 : 2 : 1 in normality with total normality of 0.1N was produced at about 4 minutes of contact time and the peak time for $Sr^{+2}$ was 20 minutes. The loaded ions were eluted using hydrochloric acid. The loaded $Cs^{+1}$ was eluted at the low eluent concentration of less than 0.1N with less than 5% contamination of $Sr^{+2}$. The loaded $Th^{+4}$ was eluted at the high eluent concentration of greater than 1N. The best eluent concentration for eluting $Th^{+4}$ was 4N.
Residual organics were considered as impurity in Sol-Gel method. The purpose of this study was to find the conditions to contain as much residual organics as possible in silica gel prepared from TEOS(tetraethylortho-silicate) by Sol-Gel method. Residual organics are to be expected to have reduction effect on synthesizing Si3N4 from silica gel. The results of this study are follows: 1) The maximum content of entrapped carbon was 19.8 wt.%(C/SiO2=0.25 wt.ratio) in silica gel synthesized under the conditions 1.5 fold mole water for incomplete hydrolysis, 2.5 fold mole phenol as a solvent and 0.1 fold mole HCl as a catalyst to TEOS. 2) Silica gel with organics entrapped by Sol-Gel method had a positive effect on the formation of Si3N4 compared with commercial silica gel. 3) Sintered body of synthesized $\alpha$-Si3N4 with Y2O3 and Al2O3 as additives at 175$0^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere showed bending strength, 602$\pm$20 MPa and frature toughness 4.45$\pm$0.15 MPa.m1/2.
Two crystal forms of cefuroxime axetil were obtained by the recrystallization from different organic solvents and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). It was confirmed that two crystal forms are identical. The dissolution patterns of these two forms were also checked in 0.07 N HCl at $37{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, 100 rpm for 180 minutes. The transformation during storage was also studied.
Ten growing male buffalo calves (aged 6-8 months, average body weight $88.2{\pm}0.57$ kg were divided randomly into two groups. Animals in group I were fed on concentrate mixture A (CP 20.2%, TDN 77.4%) and urea- ammoniated wheat straw (UAWS) while the animals in group II were fed on concentrate mixture B (CP 17.9%, TDN 77.6%) and HCl plus urea treated wheat straw (HCl UAWS) to meet their nutrient requirement for 500 g gain/d as per Kearl (1982). This feeding practice lasted for 120 days, during which fortnightly body weight were recorded to assess their growth rate. A metabolism trial was conducted after 90 days of experimental feeding to compare the digestibility of nutrients, their balance, plane of nutrition and relative cost of feeding in two groups of animals. Results revealed a significant increase in the CP content of ammoniated wheat straw due to addition of HCl viz 12.1% from 7.5%. There was a decrease in the intake of DM (p<0.05), OM (p<0.05), EE (p<0.05), NDF (p<0.01), ADF (p<0.01), cellulose (p<0.01) and hemicellulose (p<0.01) in group II as compared to group I. The digestibility (%) of DM, OM and CP was significantly (p<0.01) more in group II, whereas the digestibility (%) was significantly more for NDF (p<0.05) and hemicellulose (p<0.01) in group I than group II. There was no significant difference in the N, Ca and P balance in two groups. Intake of total DM (g/d) or (g/kg $W^{0.75}$) was significantly (p<0.01) more in group I as compared to group II, whereas the intake of DCP and TDN (g/d or g/kg $W^{0.75}$) was alike in two groups. The total body weight gain (kg), average daily gain (g/d) and feed conversion efficiency were significantly (p<0.01) more in UAWS fed group as compared to HCl UAWS fed group. Feeding cost (Rs./kg. weight gain) was significantly (p<0.05) more in group II as compared to group I. It is concluded that HCl UAWS is not suitable for the feeding of growing buffalo calves as it reduced the growth rate in comparison to UAWS fed buffalo calves.

The surface characteristics of Ti/TiN films coated on sintered stainless steels (SSS) by electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) were investigated. Stainless steel compacts containing 2, 4, and 10wt%Cu were prepared by the electroless Cu-plating method, which results in increased homogenization in the alloying powder. The specimens were coated with Ti and TiN with a 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness respectively by EB-PVD. The microstructures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using a potentiosat in 0.1 M $H_2$$SO_4$, and 0.1M HCl solutions and the corrosion surface was observed using SEM and XPS. The Ti coated specimens showed rough surface compared to Ti/TiN coated specimens. Ti and Ti/TiN coated SSS revealed a higher corrosion and pitting potential from anodic polarization curves than that of Ti and Ti/TiN uncoated SSS. In addition, Ti/TiN coated SSS containing 10wt% Cu exhibited good resistance to pitting corrosion due to the formation of a dense film on the surface and the decrease in interconnected porosity by electroless coated Cu.
