In order to investigate the toughening characteristic by microcrack formation in ceramic composites, $Al_2$O$_3$/(0~20)vol% YAG composites containing equiaxed second grains were fabricated using$ Al_2$$O_3$ during hot-pressing. AE(acoustic emission) measurements have been coupled with fracture toughness experiments of SENB method, to evaluate the microcrack formation and the improvement in fracture toughness of ceramic composites. Formation of microcrack was detected by Ae. The generation of AE events increased with increasing of load when load was applied at specimen. The AE events are generated mainly around at maximum load. Specially, the detected AE evetns of composites are many as compared with monolithic $Al_2$$O_3$. Fracture toughness of composites was improved than that of monolithic alumina. $Al_2$O$_3$/YAG composites exhibit main toughening effects by microcracking, results from mutual coalesence of microcracks being generated under applied load. However, there are few toughening mechanism like microcracking in monolithic alumina.
Al2O3/Al composites were produced by displacement reaction method, which was carried out by immersing the sintered silica preform, which was prepared from fused silica powder, in molten aluminum. Because the molten aluminum did not penetrate into the silica preform with higher than 20% of porosity when the displacement reaction was accomplished at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in air atmosphere, the optimum range of sintering temperature of silica preform was from 135$0^{\circ}C$ to 140$0^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of this Al2O3/Al composites showed three-dimentionally co-continuous alumina, which provides wear resistance and high stiffness, and aluminium which acts as a toughnening phase. The grain size of the alumina in composites did not change with the particle size of the silica preform. The exact shape of the preform was retained and a net-shaped composite was produced. The representative Al2O3/Al composite prepared in this study showed 3.30mg/㎤ of bulk density, 350-430 MPa of flexural strength, 7.0 MPa.m1/2 of fracture toughness, and good machinability.
In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites were studied. Composites were fabricated using short bamboo fiber at four different fiber loading (0 wt%, 15 wt%, 30 wt% and 45 wt%). It has been observed that few properties increases significantly with respect to fiber loading, however properties like void fraction increases from 1.71% to 5.69% with the increase in fiber loading. Hence, in order to reduce the void fraction, improve hardness and other mechanical properties silicon carbide (SiC) filler is added in bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites at four different weight percentages (0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) by keeping fiber loading constant (45 wt%). The significant improvement of hardness (from 46 to 57 Hv) at 15 wt%SiC, tensile strength (from 10.48 to 13.44 MPa) at 10 wt% SiC, flexural strength (from 19.93 to 29.53 MPa) at 5 wt%SiC and reduction of void fraction (from 5.69 to 3.91%) at 5 wt%SiC is observed. The results of this study indicate that using particulate filled bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites could successfully develop a composite material in terms of high strength and rigidity for light weight applications compared to conventional bamboo composites. Finally, SEM studies were carried out to evaluate fibre/matrix interactions.
Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite containing equiaxed grains and Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite containing elongated grains were fabricated using Al2O3-Y2O3 composition and Al2O3-La2O3 composition, respectively, by hot-pressing. In order to investigate the influence of microstructural control of second phase on toughening effect of toughened ceramic composites, AE (acoustic emission) measurements have been coupled with fracture toughness experiments(SENB and SEPB method). A separation of the fracture toughness and analysis of toughening mechanism was possible using the AE technique. The fracture toughness of hot-pressed materials was estimated to be 3.2 MPam0.5 for monolithic alumina, 4.7 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite and 6.2 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite. In monolithic Al2O3, toughening does not occur as a result of either microcracking or grain bridging, whereas, composites exhibit toughening effects by both microcracking in the frontal zone and gain bridging in the wake zone, resulting in an improvement of fracture toughness as compared with monolithic Al2O3. The fracture toughness of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite is higher than that of Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite. It may be attributed to the elongated microstructure of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite, resulting relatively greater bridging effect.
This research was carried out to investigate the effects of density, resin and particle types on the physical and mechanical properties of the composites made from various wood particles mixed with coating paper. The experiment was designed to apply with three particles (flake, chip, and fiber) and three resin types (urea, phenol and PMDI resin). The mixed ratio of coating paper to wood particle was fixed on 50 to 50% in each board making. And also it was designed to apply for four density levels (0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 g/$cm^3$) and four mixed formulations of coating paper to wood particle (10:90, 20:80, 30:70, and 40:60 %) to analyze clearly the effects of PMDI resin. Coating paper-wood particle composites have acceptable bending strength (MOR, MOE) though the mixed ratio of coating paper was increased, but have low internal bond strength and poor dimensional stability (WA, TS, LE). Composites with high density had higher mechanical properties but showed lower physical properties than composites with low density. In conclusion, at least up to 20% mixed ratios, coating paper-wood particle composites have acceptable physical and mechanical properties, and PMDI resin has possibility for coating paper-wood particle composite manufacture.

The aim of present work was to fabricate the piezoelectric composite materials of low megahertz applications such as non-destructive testing of materials. Among all the various composites, those with PZT rods embedded in Spurrs epoxy with regular periodicity (1-3 connectivity) was fabricated by dice and fill method. The fabricated size of the PZT cell were 0.18X0.18, 0.28X0.28mm$^2$, respectively. And the volume ratio of the PZT cell were 52, 64%, respectively. The resonant frequency and anti-resonant frequency of the composites were 3.5 MHz and 4.3MHz, respectively. The piezoelectric coupling coefficient were about 38 and 37% and the mechanical quality factor were about 12.7 and 22. These value were very different from these of bulk PZT Plate.
In this work, the effect of molybdenum disilicide(MoSi$_2$) content on the impact properties of carbon-carbon composites(C/C composites) was investigated in the presence of MoSi$_2$. The content of MoSi$_2$ was varied in 0, 4, 12 and 20 wt% on the basis of resin matrix for anti-oxidation properties of the composites under high temperature. As a result, the composites made with MoSi$_2$ resulted in an increase of interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix, which could improve the impact properties of the composites. Especially, 12 wt% Mosi$_2$ composites showed the highest impact properties in the present system. This was probably due to the existence of brittle-to-ductile transition(BDT) properties of MoSi$_2$ in the vicinity of 90$0^{\circ}C$, resulting from increasing the interfacial adhesion force among fibers, filler, and matrix in the composites.
Light-weight conductive polymer composites were prepared by incorporating polyheterocycles such as polypyrrole and polythiophene into pores of a highly porous cross-linked polystyrene, host polymer, to form a conductive network. The highly hydrophobic and porous host polymer was synthesized by concentrated emulsion polymerization method. Polypyrrole-based composites, prepared by employing ferric chloride-methanol system, showed a conductivity as high as 0.82 S/cm. Conductivity of polythiophene-based composites, prepared from ferric chloride-acetonitrile system, was 6.05 S/cm. Conductivity of compositivity was influenced by the initial molar ratio of oxidant to monomer as well. SEM micrographs of the composites showed that conducting polymer coated uniformly the inside wall of the porous host polymer. Shielding effectiveness of the polypyrrole-based composites and of the polythiophene-based composites were 15.2 dB and 22.5 dB at 2.0 GHz, respectively. In the temperature range from 20 to 300K, a polypyrrole impregnated composite exhibited seimiconducting behavior and followed the variable range hopping(VRH) model for charge transport.

The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$,/TEX> electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as function as functions of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$,/TEX>, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density and the mechanical properties of composites were increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents in pressureless annealing method because YAG of reaction between $Al_2O_3$ was increased. The flexural strength showed the highest value of 458.9 MPa for composites added with 4 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressed annealing method at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection, crack bridging, phase transition and YAG of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 7.1 MPa ${\cdot}\;m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressureless annealing method at room temperature. The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient showed the lowest value of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}\;{\Omega}\;{\cdot}\;cm(25\'^{\circ}C}$ and $3.0{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ for composite added with 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressureless annealing method at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25 $^{\circ}C$ to 700 $^{\circ}C$.
The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of SiC particle size(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) and additional elements such as Si, Cu and Ti on aging behavior in Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti)/SiCp composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration method using hardness and wear test, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The peak aging time in Al-5Mg-X(Si, Cu, Ti)/SiCp(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) composites is shorter than Al-5Mg-0.3Si alloy. The peak aging time of 50 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites is shorter than those of 100 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced of Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites. The Al-5Mg-0.3Si-0.1Cu-0.1Ti/SiCp(50 ${\mu}m$) composites aged at $180^{\circ}C$ has higher hardness and better wear resistance than any other aged composite. The aging effect is promoted by the addition of Si and Cu in Al-5Mg/SiCp composites, so the wear resistance of Al-5Mg/SiCp composites with Si and Cu elements is enhanced by the aging treatment.
