Carbon/epoxy woven composites are prominent wear-resistant materials due to the strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity of carbon fabric. In this study, the effect of oilabsorption on the wear behaviors of carbon/epoxy woven composites was investigated. Wear tests were performed on dry and fully oil-absorbed carbon/epoxy woven composites. The worn surfaces of the test specimens were examined via scanning electron microscopy to investigate the wear mechanisms of oil-absorbed carbon/epoxy woven composites. It was found that the oil absorption rate was 0.14% when the carbon/epoxy woven composites were fully saturated. In addition, the wear properties of the carbon/epoxy woven composites were found to be affected by oilabsorption. Specifically, the friction coefficients of dry and oil-absorbed carbon/epoxy woven composites were 0.25-0.30 and 0.55-0.6, respectively. The wear loss of the oilabsorbed carbon/epoxy woven composites was $3.52{\times}10^{-2}\;cm^3$, while that of the dry carbon/epoxy woven composites was $3.52{\times}10^{-2}\;cm^3$. SEM results revealed that the higher friction coefficient and wear loss of the oil-absorbed carbon/epoxy woven composites can be attributed to the existence of broken and randomly dispersed fibers due to the weak adhesion forces between the carbon fibers and the epoxy matrix.

In this study, the piezoelectric ceramics PZT powder was synthesized by Wet-Dry combination method. And the flexible 1-3-0 type composites were fabricated with piezoceramic PZT and Eccogel polymer matrix embedded 3rd phase. Dielectric constant of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Thickness mode coupling factor k/sub t/ which was comparable with single phase PZT ceramics and mechanical quality factor Qm were about 0.65 and 6, respectively. These composites are considered as a good candidates for broad-band type transducer applications. The acoustic impedance of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Therefore, these composites would be better used for hydrophone applications.
Non-brittle fracture behaviour of the two composite structures made of two different brittle materials was investigated using 3-point bending test. First, the layered and fibrous macro-composites were fabricated using the material easily formed, yet showing a brittle fracture behaviour similar to ceramics. The layered and fibrous Al2O3 /Al2O3 composites with weak interface were also fabricated using plate of 2 mm thickness and rod of 3 mm diameter respectively. Comparison of the mechanical properties between these two structures was performed in the lights of flexural strength and work of fracture for the composites consisting of Al2O3 and simulated materials respectively. The strength ratio of layered structure to the monolith of same volume was 0.6 and the ratio of fibrous one was about 0.2 for the composites made of simulated brittle material. The ratio of the work of fracture of the fibrous to the layered was 0.47. For Al2O3/Al2O3 composites, the strength ratio of layered and fibrous structures to the monolith with same volume were about 0.6 and 0.2 respectively. The ratio of work of fracture of the fibrous to the layered was 0.6. These confirmed that the layered structure was superior to the fibrous one in terms of flexural strength and work of fracture.

3YSZ + (x) $Al_2O_3$ composites (x = 20, 40, 60, 80 wt%) were fabricated and the influences of particle sizes of $Al_2O_3$ on their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated with XRD, SEM, vickers hardness and fracture toughness. $Al_2O_3$-3YSZ composites containing $Al_2O_3$ powder of a $0.3{\mu}m$ and an $1.0{\mu}m$, which are here in after named as $Al_2O_3$($0.3{\mu}m$)-3YSZ and $Al_2O_3$($1.0{\mu}m$)-3YSZ, respectively, were made by mixing raw materials, uni-axial pressing and sintering at $1,400^{\circ}C$, $1,500^{\circ}C$, and $1,600^{\circ}C$. $Al_2O_3$($0.3{\mu}m$)-3YSZ composites show the higher density and the better mechanical properties than $Al_2O_3$($1.0{\mu}m$)-3YSZ composites. The Vickers hardness of the $Al_2O_3$($0.3{\mu}m$)-3YSZ composites show a peak value of 1,997 Hv at the content of 60 wt% $Al_2O_3$, which is a slightly higher value in comparison with 1,938 Hv of the $Al_2O_3$($1.0{\mu}m$)-3YSZ composite. However, the fracture toughness of $Al_2O_3$-3YSZ composites monotonically increases with decreasing the content of $Al_2O_3$ without any peak values. $Al_2O_3$($0.3{\mu}m$)-3YSZ and $Al_2O_3$($1.0{\mu}m$)-3YSZ composites sintered at $1,600^{\circ}C$ have a maximum value of a $6.9MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and a $6.2MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively at the composition of containing 20 wt% $Al_2O_3$. It should be noticed that the mechanical properties and the sintering density of the $Al_2O_3$-3YSZ composites can be enhanced by using more fine $Al_2O_3$ powder due to their denser microstructure and smaller grain size.

The effect of the additives, $Y_2O_3$ and MgO, on the sintering and properties of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was investigated. It is known that MgO is used as additive for improving densification and $Y_2O_3$ is applied as sintering aid. In this study, the amounts of TiC were varied in the range of 30-47 wt%. The 0.5 wt% MgO and also varied amounts of $Y_2O_3$ from 0.3 to 1 wt% were added into the composites. The sintering of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ composites was performed in a graphite-heating element furnace at different sintering temperature, 1700 and $1900\;^{\circ}C$, for 2 hr under an argon atmosphere. The results demonstrated that the properties of the composites sintered at $1700\;^{\circ}C$ were much better than those sintered at $1900\;^{\circ}C$. The comparisons on physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of composites with and without additives were reported. Comparing with other samples, $Al_2O_3-30wt%TiC$ composites with 0.5wt% MgO and $1\;wt%Y_2O_3$ exhibited the highest density of approximately 98% of theoretical and flexural strength of 302 MPa.
The purpose of this study was to search the optimal silane concentrations for filler- silanization of seven experimental composites. Silica filer was a 25micron crushed type. 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0% silane($\gamma$-methacrylooxypropyltrimethoxysilane)were added into silica-filler with weight percentage (wt%). Mixtures(silica filler/silane)were reacted at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 72hours, and crushed into fine particles those were used as fillers for 7 experimental composites. Monomer was a 3 : 1 mixture of Bis-GMA and TEGDMA containing 0.2% tertiary amine and 0.4% camphoroquinone for light curability. A ratio for mixing the monomer and filler was 75% and 25% respectively. Seven experimental composites was classified with the concentration of silane treated, and the specimen number for each test was 10. Specimens with 6mm diameter and 3mm height dimension for measuring the diametral tensile strength were destroyed with 1mm/min cross-head speed on Instron universal testing machine (No. 4467, USA). Shear bond strength was measured on the specimens bonded to bovine enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 1 minute Fractured surfaces were observed by SEM (Hitachi S-3200, Japan) among that of the highest values measured from each groups. Following results were obtained: 1. Experimental composites containing silanized filter showed the significantly higher diametral tensile strength and shear bond strength than the composites containing un-silanized fillers(Group1) (p<0.05). 2. In silanized filler composite resins(Group 2~7), Diametral tensile strength of Group 3 showed the significantly higher than that of Group 2 and Group 6(p<0.05). 3. Shear bond strength was higher in Group 3 than that of Group 7 (p<0.05)in silanized fillers composite resins. 4. Fracture surface was formed in resin matrixes on the specimens from composites containing the fillers treated with 0.5% 1.0%, and 1.5% silane. These results mean that the optimal silane concentrations are exist for each fillet with its size and surface area, and that 1.0% is a optimal value for concentration to coat the 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ filler with silane.
Effects of ceramics on the microwave dielectric properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites filled with $MgTiO_3$ (MTi) and/or $MgTa_2O_6$ (MTa) were investigated. The dielectric constant ($K$), quality factor ($Qf$), and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency ($TCF$) of the composites were dependent on the type and volume fraction ($V_f$) of the ceramics. For the composites mixed with MTa and MTi, the $K$ and $TCF$ values decreased with increasing MTi content. The $Qf$ values of the composites were affected by relative density. The measured $K$ values of the composites were compared with those predicted by several theoretical models. Good microwave dielectric properties with values of $K$=3.6, $Qf$ = 7,788 GHz, and $TCF$ = -0.19 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ were obtained for the composites with 0.1 $V_f$ ceramics (mixed 0.025MTa and 0.075MTi).

Magnetoelectric (ME) properties of 3-0 type particulate composites have been investigated with respect to application features for reliable magnetic sensitivity and magnetically-induced output voltage. In order to figure out the magnetoelectric characteristics in the ME composites, frequency dependent ME responses were studied from [0.948 Na0.5K0.5NbO3-0.052 LiSbO3]-[Co1-xZnxFe2O4] (NKNLS)/Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (CZFO, x=0, 0.1, and 0.2). As a result, the maximal αME of 23.15 mV/cm·Oe was achieved from the NKNLS-CZFO (xZn = 0.1) composites at resonance frequency of 315 kHz and Hdc = 0 Oe. From the frequency dependent ME responses, it is clearly described that the self-biased ME composites can be used for applications as both magnetic sensors and energy harvesters, respectively.
$PbTiO_3$/P(VDF/TrFE) 0~3 composites thin films with 0.10 and 0.13 of ceramic volume fraction factor have been fabricated by two-step spin coating technique and analyzed. 0~3 connectivity of $PbTiO_3$/P(VDF/TrFE) composites film was observed successfully by SEM micrography. The SEM picture confirmed 0~3 connectivity. And, in all the properties, 0~3 $PbTiO_3$/P(VDF/TrFE) composites film was superior to P(VDF/TrFE) copolymer. Therefore, with a good low-dielectric constant and a high pyroelectric coefficient, the composite thin films can be used for a new pyroelectric infrared sensor of higher performance.
