  • A radial heat sink, adopted to LED(light emitting diode) downlight, was optimized. Discrete transfer radiation model (DTRM) was used to calculate radiation heat transfer, and numerical model was verified with experimental results. The effects of number of fin, long fin length and middle fin length on overall thermal resistance and radiation heat transfer were analyzed. As the emissivity increased, thermal resistance decreased due to the increment of radiation heat transfer. The radial heat sink was optimized and optimum number of long fins is 19~28, optimum length of long fin is about half of radius of heat fink and optimum fin ratio is 0.4~0.7.

  • A heat sink (HS) system using heat pipes for electronics systems was studied. The experimental results indicate that a cooling capacity of up to 150w at an overall temperature difference of $50^{\circ}C$ can be attainable. The heat sink design program also showed that a computer simulation can predict the most of the parameters involved. To do so, however, the interior temperature distribution had to be verified by experimental results. The current simulation results were close to the experimental results in acceptable range. The simulation study showed that the design program can be a good tool to predict the effects of various parameters involved in the optimum design of the heat sink.

  • The heat generated by electronic devices can result in performance degradation. Therefore, a heat sink has been used to release the operating heat into the air outside. This study addressed a methodology for a heat sink with an inner tunnel. Under forced convection conditions, the heat transfer characteristics were different so the cooling and heating performances were studied for the heat sink with an inner tunnel. This was evaluated by performing the experimental test examining the heat transfer characteristics related to the variance in time and temperature distribution. In the cooling experiment, the temperature of the A-shape was lower than that of the B-shape, when the voltage was 10 V. These experimental results indicate the optimal cooling effect. In a heating experiment, the temperature of the A-shape was higher than that of the B-shape, when the voltage was 13 V. The experimental results showed that the temperature and efficiency of the A-shape were higher than those of the B-shape.

  • In this paper, a cooling system that includes a heat spreader and a natural convective heat sink is proposed for the cooling of a concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) module. The heat spreader and the natural convective heat sink are designed on the basis of previous analytical investigations. In order to evaluate the proposed cooling system, we conducted experimental investigations varying the heat rate and the inclined angle of the cooling system. From the experimental results, it is found that the proposed cooling system satisfies the design constraints for good operation of the CPV module. Finally, a correlation is suggested for estimating the effects of the heat rate and the inclined angle on the thermal performance of the natural convective heat sink is suggested.

  • As the number of mobile subscribers has increased recently, the demand for more number of base stations has increased. However, because of the shortage of sites for constructing base stations, a mobile communication module needs to be small in size. To minimize the size of the module, the size of the heat sink attached to the outside of the module should be minimized. Furthermore, the temperature of each electronic component of the module should be lower than the allowable temperature so that thermal stability can be maintained. A commercial PIDO (process integration and design optimization) tool PIAnO and a commercial CFD (computational fluid dynamics) tool FLOTHERM are used to minimize the size of the module while the constraints on the temperatures of the twelve electronic components are satisfied. As a result of design optimization, the volume of the heat sink is reduced by 41.9% while all the constraints on the temperature of the twelve electronic components of the module are satisfied.

  • The heat transfer over a radial heat sink, adapted for LED (light emitting diode) downlights, was experimentally and analytically investigated. We added radiation heat transfer into a previous calculation that neglected this factor. The numerical results agreed well with experimental results. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effects of the geometric parameters (fin length, fin height, ideal number of fins) and the operating parameter (heat flux) on the average heat-sink temperature from the heat-sink array. We found the fin length that maximizes the heattransfer performance. As the emissivity increased, the effect of geometric parameters on the radiation heat transfer decreased.

  • In order to guarantee the performance of electronic products. It is needed to improve the cooling performance of heat sink. So this paper has been made to investigate the cooling performance for the aluminum heat sink using pulsating heat pipe(PHP). The pulsating heat pipe was used as a heat spreader. Working fluid was R-22. Heater (50 mm ${\times}$ 50 mm ${\times}$ 3mm) was attached to heat sink and it generated 30W, 60W, 80W, 100W. Heat sink was tested for forced convection with 1${\sim}$4m/s of inlet air velocity. And both type heat sinks were carried out by using CFD simulation. This study showed that pulsating heat pipe can be a good tool to improve cooling performance of heat sink.

  • A study on convective cooling characteristics has been done in the channels with heat pipes and associated Plane fins Analysis with FLUENT V5.0 lies its Purpose on the possible enhancement of heat transfer capability between an existing three in-line arrayed heatpipes and an extending four in-line arrayed heatpipes with increasing channel width. Numerical analysis is limited to the laminar flow in an isolated flow channel by employing cyclic boundary conditions for calculation purposes. Friction factors for three and four in-line arrayed heatpipes are compared with experimental results. In addition, temperature behavior at the plate fin for the three in-line arrayed heatpipes is compared with experiment. Friction factors and overall channel heat transfer coefficients (and/or Nusselt numbers) are presented as a function of Reynolds number. An increase of number of heatpipes and channel width reults in a decrease of the friction factor and doesn't not result in an increase of heat transfer performance. However. considering the 25$\%$ increase of heat load accompanies with maximum 8$^{\circ}C$ rise of average temperature of heat pipes, the four in-line array with the increase of channel width of heat pipe heat sink can be considered appropriate.

  • This paper presents the measurement and analysis results for the performance of HGCHP system using a cooling tower as a supplemental heat rejector. In order to demonstrate the performance of the hybrid approach, we installed the monitoring equipments including sensors for measuring temperature and power consumption, and measured operation parameters from February 1, 2014 to February 28, 2015. Leaving load temperatures to building showed an average value of $11.7^{\circ}C$ for cooling and $39.5^{\circ}C$ for heating, respectively. From the analysis, the daily PF of hybrid GCHP system varied from 2.6 to 6.6 over the measurement period.

  • An inclined jet impinging on a pin fin heat sink is proposed and investigated experimentally. To investigate the flow pattern, flow visualization using fluorescence and velocity measurement using particle image velocimetry(PIV) are conducted with water. The jet impinges over a wide span of the heat sink with a large recirculation in the upper free space and occasionally with another smaller one in the upstream corner. Further, thermal experimentation is conducted using air to obtain temperature profiles using a thermocouple rake in the air and using thermal image on the heat sink back plate, with impinging angles of 35, 45 and 55 degrees. The Reynolds number range based on the nozzle slot is varied from 1507 to 6405. The results show that impinging angle of 55 degree shows the largest heat transfer capability. The results of thermal experiment are compared and discussed with those of flow visualization.
