Resins were synthesized by mixing 1-aza-15-crown-5 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (a hazardous material) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslink of 1%, 2%, 5% and 20% by a substitution reaction. The characteristic of these resins was confirmed by the content of chlorine, element analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvents and crosslink on adsorption of metal ions by the synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. The metal ion was showed a fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in increasing order of uranium ($UO_2^{2+}$) > manganese ($Mn^{2+}$) > praseodymium ($Pr^{3+}$). The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2%, 5%, and 20% crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.
The geology of the Apdong Nb-Ta deposit, is hosted by alkali metasomatites, consist of Upper Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, alkali syenites(Hoamsan intrusive) of Phyonggang Complex(late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic), Jurassic granite and Quaternary basalt. Alkali syenites are distinguished as alkali amphibole-pyroxene syenite, alkali amphibole-biotite syenite, biotite-nepheline syenite, biotite syenite, and quartz-alkali amphibole-pyroxene syenite. Alkali metasomatites are the products of intense post-magnatic metasomatism, and form the Nb-Ta ore bodies as the belt, irregular vein and lenticular types in the southern part of Hoamsan intrusive. The ore mineralization is characterized by the occurrence of pyrochlore, zircon, and small amounts of columbite, fergusonite. magnetite, fluorite, molybdenite, ilmenite, titanite, apatite, and monazite. Pyrochlore is one of the niobium/tantalum oxides and contains substantial amounts of rare earths and radioactive elements. The compositional varieties of pyrochlore can be defined: (1) enriched in tantalum, uranium and cerium, (2) substantially tantalum- and fluorine-poor, and (3) enriched in thorium or barium. The geochemical characteristics, ore textures and mineral occurrences indicate that alkali metasomatism of the mineralizing fluid was the dominant ore-forming process.
The selective separation and the quantitative recovery of uranium from Korean monazite sand have been studied by anion-exchange chromatography. It has been shown that method of anion-exchange chromatography under controlled conditions of elution can be applied to the production of relatively high purity of Uranium Oxide from monazite sand. Under the optimum separation conditions, the recoveries from standard sample were up to 99.3% as $U_3O_8$ on sulfate form anion resin bed and 99.2% as $U_2O_3{\cdot}P_2O_7$ on phosphate form anion resin bed. The possibility of recovering uranium from the monazite sulfate solution using a strong base anion exchange resin-Amberlite IRA-900. Uranium was successfully recovered about 92 percent. Phosphate ion did not seem to interfere with the process.

Carbamoylphosphate (CMPO) [CMPO analogue; 2-(diphenylphosphoryl)-N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)acetamide]silane, as a functional self-assembled molecules, grafted mesoporous silicates were prepared by simple hydrolysis and condensation reaction. Pore sized tailored mesoporous silicates such as MCM-41, SBA-15, or amorphous silica nanoparticles were adopted as host materials. The surface area of ordered mesoporous silicates was ranged from 680 $m^2/g$ to 1310 $m^2/g$ with different pore diameters that estimated to be ca. 2.3~9.1 nm by BJH method. Among the OMMs host materials, SBA-15(II) has higher loading ratio (~35 wt%) of CMPO derivative than other OMMs. Accessibility to CMPO silane functional groups in the surface of mesoporous silicas was studied by lanthanide ions sorption experiments. All of the CMPO modified OMMs favors the smaller Eu(III) and Nd(III) cations than La(III) for relative larger ionic radius.
The coal-bearing metapelites from the Hoenam area are interbedded within the Ogcheon Supergroup, which are composed mainly of graphite, quartz, muscovite and associated with trace amount of biotite, chlorite, pyrite, rutile and barite. Although the formation was mined for coal, and the contents of V, U and Mo are a higher grade in coal formations than the host metapelites. The ratios of Al/Na and K/Na in coal formation are very heterogeneous and wide range from 10.28 to 90.91 and from 3.73 to 36.60, respectively. The V content increase with increasing Al and Ba contents, but the U and Mo are not related with other elements. Those are suggested that controlled of mineral compositions in coaly metapelites due to substitution, migration and reequilibrium of elements by regional metamorphism. These coal formation were deposited in basin of marine environments and the REE of these rocks are not influenced with metamorphism and hydrothermal alterations on the basis of Al content versus La, La against Ce, the ratios of La/Ce (0.23 to 0.73) and Th/U (0.03 to 16.6). These rocks also show much variation in $La_N/Yb_N$ (0.53 to 14.19), Th/Yb (0.51 to 6.00) and La/Th (0.15 to 18.92), and their origin is explained by derivation from a mixture of sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks. The wide range in trace and REE element characteristics as Co/Th (0.07 to 3.00), La/Sc (0.04 to 23.48), Sc/Th (0.06 to 7.57), V/Ni (2 to 3319), Cr/V (0.03 to 1.06) and Ni/Co (1.00 to 79.85) of these coaly metapelites argues for inefficient mixing of the various source lithologies during sedimentation.
Ever increasing global energy demand gives rise to uncontrollable environmental pollution. Demand on fossil fuel and consequent carbon emission leads to global warming and climate change. Nuclear energy is an alternative source to generate clean energy but mining of nuclear fuel is associated with harmful chemicals. Mining of valuable minerals from sea water by membrane separation process is a cost effective along with environmental friendly process. Separation and adsorption based mining of valuable minerals from sea water are another efficient process. Recovery of actinides from rare earth elements are very challenging and expensive process. Pressure driven membrane separation process is economically more viable along with environmental process. In this review membrane separation process are based on polyether sulfone, polyamide, polyimide, polyamidoxine and hybrid membranes. In case of adsorption process, mainly amidoxime kind of adsorbent are discussed.
Non-aqueous processes have been developed for stable management and reuse of spent fuels. Nowadays, a plan for the management of spent fuel is being sought focusing on a non-aqueous process in Korea. Named as pyroprocessing, it includes an electrolytic reduction process using molten salt at high temperature for the spent fuels, which provides metallic product for a following electro-refining process. The electrolytic reduction process utilizes electrochemical reaction producing Li to convert oxides into metals in high temperature LiCl medium. Various kinds of elements in the spent fuels would be distributed in the system according to their respective reactivity with the reductant, Li, and the medium, LiCl. This study elucidates the reactions of the elements to understand the behavior of composite elements on the spent fuels by thermodynamic calculations. Uranium and transuranic are reduced into their metallic forms while rare-earth oxides, except for Eu, are stable against the reaction at a process temperature. This study also covers the tendency of reactions with respect to the temperature and, finally, estimates radioactivity and heat load on the distributed phases based on the reference spent fuel characteristics.
Yeongweol sericite deposit of Gangwon Province is regarded as one of the sericite deposits derived from granitic rocks due to post-magmatic alkali metasomatism, and the other sericite deposit of the same origin is the Daehyun mine of Gyungbug Province. Sericite ores were originated from leucocratic granitic stocks of Cambrian-Triassic age which intruded the pegmatitic migmatite of the unknown age and granite of the Pre-cambrian age, respectivcly. Jangsan quartzite of the lowermost formations of the Paleozoic era, which played as the capping rock protected from the leakage of the hydrothermal solution. It is well known that those sericite deposits arc formed during formation of the geosyncline, and they are also situated in the margins of the Hambaeg Syncline. Leucocratic granites commonly contain pegmatites with tourmaline crystals, and are rich in potassium feldspars, and sodium plagioclase as well. Sericitized ores are mainly found as we go up to the higher elevations or to the margins of the stocks. And some of the Highest grade sericite ores show the monominerallic character composed of nearly pure sericite probably doc to the ultra greisenization. Chemical analysis shows higher $Na_{2}O$ and $K_{2}O$ contents $(2.00\sim7.03wt%)$ as the sericitizations arc preceded and they represent obvious greisenization. But low CaO contents $(0.05\sim4.51wt%)$ indicate that albitizations are so weak. Pyrophyllite of the Youngweol area is often accompanied by the sericite, indicating rather stronger thermal effect than the Daehyun mine. It is known that there are several Sn deposits originated from greisenization in the Taebaegsan region. And greisens are inclined to contain W, Mo and several REE's such as Be, Nb and Li, and so Taebaegsan region interbedded with lots of carbonate formations are still worthwhile to survey for those metallic deposits.

The pupose of this study was to identify the material characteristics, firing environments and making techniques for the jar coffins from the Oryangdong kiln site and the Ungokdong tomb site in Naju. All jar coffins had very similar physical, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, although it was excavated from the different sites. The wall thickness of the jar coffins was about 2.3 to 5.3 cm. Under the microscopy, the jar coffins include a large quantity of various quartz with some microcrystalline and showed partly orthoclase and biotite. It is presumed that the mineral sherds added to maintain the thick wall and to control the percentage of contraction during drying and firing of jar coffins and it has contained about 11.4 to 19.8 %. Firing temperature of the jar coffins is estimated as 1,000 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. Also, all jar coffins and soils show similar geochemical behavior of elements and clay-mineralization degree within the site. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of the jar coffins. But it shows different characteristics in major elements of soils which is collected at the kiln floor and the trench region of the Oryangdong kiln site because of the lack of quartz and feldspar in the soils. Therefore, it can use of the jar coffins making clay, if it goes through a simple special process such as mixing temper.
The Miocene volcanic rocks in the Dangsari area, eastern part of Ulsan city, are mainly composed of andesite lava flows and pyroclastic rocks. The andesite lavas are identified as two-pyroxone andesite, comprising phenocrysts of augite ($Wo_{43.2}$$En_{41.0}$$Fs_{15.8}$ ) and hyperthene ($Wo_{2.7}$$65.8_{En}$$_{Fs}$ 31.5). The andesitic pyroclastic rocks are largely composed of pyroclastic breccias with alternating tuff-breccia and lapilli tuff, which showing planar layering, and minor amount of andesitic tuff with thin deposits of interlayered tuffaceous shale. According to the petrochemical data, andesitic rocks belong to medium-K calc-alkaline andesite. The position of bulk composition on the AFM diagram and the presence of normative quartz and hypersthene indicate that the volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline. The trace element composition and REE patterns of andesite, which are characterized by a high LILE/HFSE ratio and enrichment in LREE, suggest that they are typical of continental margin arc calc-alkalic volcanic rocks produced in the subduction environment. On the discrimination diagram, the Dangsari volcanic rocks fall into the fields of subduction related continental margin arc volcanic province. The primary magic melts may be derived from about 15% partial melting of mantle wedge in the upper mantle under destructive plate margin. And the melt evolved to calc-alkaline andesite magma by fractional crystallization and the magma was a little contaminated with crustal materials.
