  • When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.

  • Characteristics of lifted flames for highly diluted propane and methane with nitrogen in coflowing air is experimentally investigated. In case of propane, for various fuel mole fractions and jet velocities, three distinctive types of flames are observed; nozzle attached flames, stationary lifted flames, and oscillating lifted flames. When fuel jet velocity is much smaller than coflow velocity, the base of nozzle attached flame has a tribrachial structure unlike usual coflow difusion flames. Based on the balance mechanism of the propagation speed of tribrachial flame with flow velocity, jet velocity is scaled with stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. Results show that there exists two distinctive lifted flame stabilization; stabilization in the developing region and in the developed region of jets depending on initial fuel mole fraction. It has been found that lifted flame can be stabilized for fuel velocity even smaller than stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. This can be attributed to the buoyancy effect and flow visualization supports it. Lifted flames are also observed for methane diluted with nitrogen. The lifted flames only exist in the developing region of jet.

  • Co-flow axisymmetric laminar premixed flame of methane was used to study the influence of air temperature and $N_2$ addition on the flame structure, temperature field and emission characteristics. OH 2-D images and temperatures along the centerline were measured experimentally by PLIF and CARS techniques respectively to observe the influences of dilution and thermal effects of $N_2$ in the gas mixture. Also, the concentration of NOx was measured at each condition by gas analyser to see the suppression effect of N2 addition on NOx emissions. It was found that OH concentrations distribute widely as air temperature goes higher, while the effect of $N_2$ addition is not significant. But $N_2$ addition highly contributes to the flame front and NOx emissions which was argued to be due to the reduction of flame temperature. In accordance with experimental study, numerical simulation using CHEMKlN code was carried out to compare the temperature results with those acquired by CARS measurement, and we could find that there is good agreement between those results.

  • An experimental study was conducted to find the effect of a pilot flame on the flammability of inert-gas-diluted methane and propane. The diffusion pilot flame was formed with propane at the innermost nozzle of a concentric triple co-flow burner. The main diffusion flame was formed with nitrogen-diluted methane or propane at the outermost nozzle of the burner. An air flow was located in-between. The results showed that the existence of the pilot flame helped stabilizing the main flame even at the flammability limit concentration of nitrogen-diluted fuel. The co-flow burner generated re-circulation zones and local variation of equivalence ratio depending on the flow rates of the reactants, which are known to help flame stabilization. Hot-wire experiments confirmed that both heating of the reactants and supplying of active chemical species by the pilot flame contributed to stabilization of the main flame. The results of this study would suggest a design concept for an efficient SVRU system that minimizes the emission of unburned hydrocarbon fuel from ship fuel tanks.

  • Experimental study in coflow jet flames has been conducted to investigate the helium-dilution effect of coflow air on self-excitation. For various helium mole fractions and jet velocities, two types of self-excitation were observed: buoyancy-driven self-excitation and Lewis-number-induced self-excitation(here after called Le-ISE) coupled with buoyancy-driven one. The difference between buoyancy-driven and Le-ISE is clarified by using the Mie-scattering visualization as well as exploring the different features. The mechanism of Le-ISE is proposed. When the system Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number was lowered, Le-ISE is shown to be launched. Le-ISE is closely related to heat loss, in that it can be launched in even methane jet flame (Lewis number less than unity) with helium-diluted coflow air. Particularly, Le-ISE becomes significant as the Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number decreases and heat-loss becomes significant.

  • Stabilization characteristics of highly $N_2$-diluted $CH_4-O_2$ flame in an axially two-section porous inert medium were experimentally investigated for its application to the waste gas scrubber in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The flame behaviors were observed with respect to the fuel and $N_2$ flow rates and the equivalence ratios. As a result, four kinds of flame behaviors such as stable, flashback crossing the interface, blowout and sudden extinction were observed. It was also found that there exists two flame regime divided by a critical fuel flow rate. In addition, the flame stability was discussed based on the $N_2$ index which means the abatement capacity of our combustor in scrubbing the waste gas from the semiconductor processes.

  • In order to keep the competitiveness of LPG fuel for transportation fuel, the difference in fuel consumption with gasoline and cost for an aftertreatment system should be reduced with continuous development of technology for LPG engine. In the present study, spray-guided type direct injection combustion system, whose configuration is composed of direct injector in the vicinity of spark plug, was employed to realize stable lean combustion. A certain level of nitrogen oxides($NO_x$) emits due to a locally rich mixture regions in the stratified mixture. With the application of EGR system for the reduction of $NO_x$, 15% of $NO_x$ reduction was achieved whereas fuel consumption and hydrocarbon emission increased. By the application of EGR, the combustion speed reduced especially appeared at initial flame development period and peak heat release rates and increasing rates for heat release rate decreased as EGR rate increased due to the dilution effect of intake air.

  • Destructive methods are used for the turnup determination of an irradiated PWR fuel. One of the methods includes U, Pu, Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) determination by an isotope dilution mass spectrometry using triple spikes (U-233, Pu-242 and Nd-150). The method involves two sequential ion exchange resin separation procedures. Pu is eluted from the first anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$8) with 12 M HCl-0.1 M HI mixed solution, followed by U elution with 0.1 M HCl. Nd is isolated from other fission products on the second anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$4) with a nitric acid-methanol eluent. Each fraction is analysed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The difference between Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) method is found with an average 2.07%. The results are compared with those by the heavy element method using U and Pu isotopes and by the destructive y-spectrometric measurement of Cs-137. The dependences of isotope composition of U and Pu on burn-up, and correlation between those isotopes are illustrated graphically.

  • The use of emulsified fuel and EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) system are effective methods to reduce NOx emission from diesel engines. In general, it is considered that EGR method influences diesel engine combustion in three different ways: thermal, chemical and dilution effect. Among others, the thermal effect is related to the increase of specific heat capacity due to the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ in inlet air. Meanwhile, emulsified fuel method of utilizing latent heat of vaporization and miro-explosion has been recognized as an effective technique for reducing diesel engine emissions. In this paper, an author studied on combustion and emission characteristics by using emulsified fuel (EF, Light oil : 80% + Water : 20%) and EGR (30% EGR ratio) system. And the effect of fuel injection pattern control was investigated.

  • An experiment using high preheated and swirled air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. Combustion using high preheated air has two remarkable characteristics ; (1) low NOx emission with increasing dilution level, (2) high thermal efficiency in the furnace. Also, swirled air can mix fuel and oxidizer well in condition of diffusion flme and maintain the stable combustion. The color of flame changes from yellow to blue green according to increasing the dilution level of mixture gas. NO emission decreased with increasing dilution level and the swirl number.
