  • To obtain the basic data for monitoring and the conservation of native plant species at the sub-alpine zone Jongseogdae in Jirisan (Mt.).40 plots(5m${\times}$5m) set up by random sampling method and the distribution of native shrub and herb species at the subalpine zone was surveyed. Leading shrub species at the subalpine zone of Jongseogdae were Tripterygium regelii with IP value of 23.45% : followed by Lespedeza maximowiczii, Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa and Lespedeza tomentella. Dominant species at the subalpine zone were Lysimachia clethroides, Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum, Synurus deltoides, Veratrum maackii var. japonicum, Hemerocallis fulva and Astilbe chinensis var. davidii. Rhododendron tschonoskii recorded from the rare and endangered species list of the Korea Forest Service distributed among the rocks on the top of Jongseogdae. The long-term sustainable habitat monitoring might be required to conserve this subalpine zone.

  • The Weolchulsan is one of the phytogeographically important areas among national parks of Korea because this region is located in the northern limit of Southern Plant Types. The flora of the area was enlisted as 516 taxa, 106 families, 318 genera, 453 species, 59 varieties, and 4 forms. The six taxa such as Diplomorpha trichotoma, Monotropastrum globosum, Hololeion maximowiczii, Drosera rotundifolia, Utricularia japonica and Utricularia racemosa are enlisted as the Rare and Endangered Species which is categorized by the Korea Forest Service. The Ratio of Naturalized and Urbanization Index was 4.65% and 9.06%, respectively.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma that is found most frequently in the salivary gland is an extremely rare malignant tumor in middle ear and is a slow growing one with a characteristic tendency of recurrence after surgical removal. Recently we experienced a case of this rare adenoid cystic carcinoma arising from middle ear of 30 year old male patient. The patient complained of hearing impairment for two years duration and pulsating tinnitus for two weeks duration in the right ear. Under the local anesthesia, throgh exploratory tympanotomy, a grayish white mass measuring $1.5\times$1.5$\times$1mm in the hypotympanic portion was removed out and a adenoid cystic carcinoma was verified histopathologically.

  • Angiofibroma in otorhinolaryngologic field is rare, highly vascular and non-metastatizing benign tumor. It was noted as histologically benign but clinically malignant tumor because of the anatomical site, severe bleeding in surgery and recurrence in incomplete removal. It occurs almostly in nasopharynx of adolescent males. Recently, the authors have experienced a very rare case of angiofibroma which occupied the nasal septum in a 37-years-old-male with complaints of nasal obstruction and frequent nasal bleeding. The tumor mass was removed surgically through intranasal approach under local anesthesia. We report our case with review of current literatures.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate burden and the qualify of life in caregivers who are taking care of home-based rare and incurable disease patients. Methods: The subjects of this study were 300 caregivers of rare and incurable disease patients registered at five health centers in Seoul. A survey was conducted by mail and visit in person during the period from the 25th of March to the 12th of May 2005. Collected data were analyzed through t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient. Result: The mean burden of caregivers was 3.42, and the mean qualify of life of caregivers was 2.71. Burden and QoL showed significant differences according to caregivers' characteristics such as sender, age, relation to the patient, academic qualification, religion, occupation, monthly household income and perceived health condition. Caregivers' burden was in an inverse correlation with their quality of life. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, rare and incurable disease caregivers' burden and their quality of life were in a significant correlation with each other. In order to improve caregivers' quality of life by reducing their burden, we need to reestablish comprehensive policies for rare and incurable disease management including nursing intervention strategies for caregivers.

  • A faunal study on the marine decapods of Saemangeum located in the western part of South Korea was performed during the period from August 21, 2003 to October 25, 2003. Forty four species in 17 families were identified through the present investigation, which were represented by 15 species of shrimps in seven families, three species of anomurans in two families, and 26 species of crabs in eight families. Three species of the identified species were new to Korea: Alpheus sp. and Athanas sp. in shrimps, and Asthenognathus sp. in crab. Of the species collected in the present study, Ogyrides orientalis (Stimpson, 1860) in shrimp, and Acmaeopleura balssi Shen, 1932 and Tritodynamia horvathi Nobili, 1905 in crabs are rare species in the western coast of South Korea.

  • The anomalous retro-psoas iliac artery is an extremely rare congenital iliolumbar vascular anomaly. A 51-year-old woman presented to our emergency department with worsening right lower extremity pain and weakness for 3 months. CT angiography of the right lower extremity showed no evidence of stenosis in the lower extremity arteries and the incidental finding of an anomalous right retro-psoas iliac artery. Herein, we report a rare case of anomalous retro-psoas iliac artery. Surgeons and clinicians need to be aware of this rare congenital anomaly to avoid severe complications during pelvic or orthopedic surgery.

  • This study reviewed the external morphological characteristics of a rare species, Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore, in South Korea through a comparison of its previous records. Also, a distribution map of this species was made using previous data on flora and voucher specimens. Furthermore, the soil characteristics of Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore was analysed in order to determine the correlation between external morphological features and soil characteristics. At the study sites, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphates, exchangeable potassium, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium, cation exchange capacity and soil pH were found to be in the ranges of 3.25-29.83%, 0.15-1.14%, 3.0-156 mg/kg, $0.39-1.49cmol^+/kg$, $2.48-38.07cmol^+/kg$, $0.77-18.29cmol^+/kg$, $7.3-23.0cmol^+/kg$ and 4.6-7.1 respectively. The soil condition surrounding the population of Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore in Mt. Ap-san (Daegu) was found to have higher percentages of organic matter, total nitrogen, and cation exchange capacity than the soil condition of other populations. Moreover, the length of inflorescence and the number of flowers in this population were significantly higher than the populations studied in other areas (P < 0.001). We also identified a significant correlation between genetic, geographic distance and several morphological characteristics. A comprehensive review of various data on Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore such as external morphological characteristics, genetic structure, growth conditions, vegetation properties, and environmental characteristics is required to understand its growth characteristics and conserve this rare species.

  • In the digital media environment, individuals' information behavior about donation has been more interactive than ever. This study tried to figure out which factors impact communicative actions, based on the situational theory of problem solving(STOPS) in the donation situation for children with a rare incurable disease. This study tried to figure out the instrumental role of communicative action in donation situation. The findings from the survey(N=524) revealed that problem recognition and involvement recognition have a positive influence on a situational motivation, while constraint recognition had a negative influence. A referent criterion and a situational motivation have a positive influence on communicative actions. Also, a perceived moral obligation and a anticipated guilt have additional explanation of situational motivation for children with a rare incurable disease.
