  • The effects of various factors such as adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity, species and concentration of adsorbates(benzene and toluene) and aspect ratio(L/D) on adsorption characteristics were investigated in a fixed bed with activated carbon. The breakthrough time in a fixed bed was decreased with the increasing of adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity and concentration of adsorbates. The interstitial velocity, concentration of adsorbates and adsorption temperature had influenced considerably upon the MTZ(mass transfer zone) and LUB(length of unused bed) obtained through the breakthrough curves, while aspect ratio(L/D) had smaller effect than former factors. Especially, the concentration of adsorbates among factors have the largest effect on MTZ and LUB. From comparison with the model isotherms, such as the Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich, the experimental isotherm data of benzene and toluene agreed farily well to three adsorption isotherm models.

  • For the purpose of controlling the release of radioiodine to the environment in nuclear power plants, adsorption characteristics of elemental iodine and methyl iodide on the base carbon and 2%, 5% TEDA impregnated carbons were studied. The amounts of adsorption of elemental iodine and methyl iodide on the carbons were compared with Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips and Dubinin-Astakhov(DA) isotherm equations. Adsorption data were well correlated by the DA equation based on the potential theory. Adsorption energy distributions were obtained from the parameters of the DA equation derived from the condensation approach method. For the adsorption of methyl iodide and elemental iodine-carbon system, the DA equation can be well expressed by the degree of heterogeneity of the micropore system because the surface is nonuniform when its potential energy is unequal. The adsorption energy distribution wes investigated to find a surface heterogeneity on the carbon. The surface heterogeneity for iodine-carbon system is highly affected by the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction as well as the pore structure. The surface heterogeneity increases as a content of TEDA impregnated increases. The adsorption nature of methyl iodide on carbon turned out to be more heterogeneous than that of elemental iodine.

  • Quantitative measurements have been made by using equilibrium dialysis techniques on the extent of complexation between PCB and dissoved humic acid(HA). This research investigates the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorption for the removal of PCB from organic free water and humid acid background solution by using bench-scale equilibrium and rate tests. It was found that the extent of complexation depended on the pH, calcium concentration, ionic strength, and the concentration of humic acid. When HA was present, activated carbon capacity was greatly reduced due to complexation and competitive adsorption effects and the adsorption characteristics became complicated by the presence of various species such as the unassociated HA, PCB, and PCB-HA complexes.

  • The sorption of Cd$^{2+}$ on calcite was studied in aqueous solutions of several electrolytes. The Cd$^{2+}$ concentration, 10$^{-8}$ M, was kept well below saturation with respect to CdCO$_3$(s). Sorption behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ in different ionic strengths of NaClO$_4$solutions shows that sorption is independent of ionic strength. This result suggests that Cd$^{2+}$ sorption on calcite surface is of a specific nature, and adsorption is controlled by an inner-sphere type of surface complex. Two stages in the sorption behavior could be identified: an initial rapid uptake, followed by slower uptake reaching a maximum steady state by 145 hrs. No evidence was observed for surface precipitation, although it can not be entirely ruled out. Desorption of Cd$^{2+}$ from the calcite surface after resuspension into Cd-free solution is initially very rapid, but depends partly on the previous sorption history. Desorption behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ show that an initial rapid desorption followed either by slow uptake reaching a maximum, as in the adsorption experiments, or slowing desorption to reach a steady state minimum. This irreversible behavior of Cd$^{2+}$ sorption and desorption may act as one of the controls for regulating the mobility of dissolved Cd$^{2+}$ natural aqueous systems. Calculated adsorption partition coefficients suggest that overall sorption and desorption process in the concentration range are controlled by d single mechanism.ingle mechanism.

  • Fixed-bed adsorption of metal ions on chitosan bead was studied to remove heavy metal ions in waste water. Chitin was extracted from carb shell and chitosan was prepared by deacetylation of the chitin. The chitosan in bead was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm was determined from the experimental results of equilibrium adsorption for individual metal ion ($Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$) on chitosan bead. Adsorption strength of metal ions decreased in the order of $Cu^{2+}$>$Co^{2+}$>$Ni^{2+}$ ion. Breakthrough curves of single and multicomponent adsorption for metal ions were obtained from the experimental results of fixed-bed adsorption. The breakthrough curves were analyzed by simulation with fixed-bed adsorption equation based on LDFA (linear driving force approximation) adopted LAS (ideal adsorbed solution) theory which can predict multi-component adsorption isotherm from individual adsorption isotherm. The behavior of fixed bed adsorption for single and multi-component system could be nicely simulated by the equation.

  • In batch experiments, the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel was studied using Sylopute. Experimental equilibrium data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Among the four isotherm models tested, the Langmuir isotherm model gave the highest accuracy. The adsorption capacity was found to decrease with increases in temperature and the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel onto Sylopute was a favorable physical process. Adsorption kinetic data agreed very well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while boundary layer diffusion and intraparticle diffusion did not play a key role in the adsorption process. The process of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel adsorption onto Sylopute was exothermic and nonspontaneous. Also, the adsorption isosteric heat was independent of surface loading indicating an energetically homogeneous adsorbent.

  • Fluoride removal by acid and heat treated red mud were studied in batch and column system regarding contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and filter depth. The results showed that acid treated with 0.8 M HCl, had highest adsorption capacity of fluoride and adsorption capacity decreased as heat treatment temperature increased. Sorption equilibrium reached in 30 min at a initial concentration of 50 mg-F/L but 1 h was required to reach the sorption equilibrium at the initial concentration of 500 mg-F/L by 0.8 M acid treated red mud (0.8 M-ATRM). Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 23.162 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption decreased as pH increased due to the fluoride competition for favorable adsorption site with $OH^-$ at higher pH. Removal percentage was increased but the amount of adsorption per unit mass decreased by adding the amount of 0.8 M-ATRM. It was concluded that the 0.8 M-ATRM could be used as a potential adsorbent for the fluoride removal from aqueous solutions because of its high fluoride adsorption capacity and low cost.

  • Allura Red (AR) is a water-soluble harmful tar-based food colorant (FD & C Red 40). Batch adsorption studies were performed for the removal of AR using bituminous coal based granular activated carbon as adsorbent by varying the operation parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm. From determined separation factor ($R_L$), adsorption of AR by granular activated carbon could be employed as effective treatment method. Temkin parameter, B was determined to 1.62~3.288 J/mol indicating a physical adsorption process. By estimation of adsorption rate experimental data, the value of intraparticle diffusion rate constant ($k_m$) increased with the increasing adsorption temperature. The adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.16~-6.55 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = + 23.29 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively.

  • This study is to investigate the correlation of pore structures of Zeolite 5As modified with acid and their adsorption capacity of toluene vapor using the dynamic adsorption method. The experimental results showed that the modification with acid allowed more micropores and enlarged the existing pores. Toluene vapor was mainly adsorbed on the surface of pores over $15\;{\AA}$ in diameter. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of toluene vapor of the modified Zeolite 5As was in the range of $15{\sim}70\;mg/g$ and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was increased to f times than that of the Zeolite 5A. The correlation between the total cumulative surface area and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was hard to say linear. The correlation in diameter between the cumulative surface area in the range of over $15\;{\AA}$ and the equilibrium adsorption capacity gate the highest correlation factor of 0.997.
