  • Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was used to determine the equilibrium isotherm of single and multi-components of dUrd(2'-deoxyuridine), dGuo(2'-deoxyguanosine), and dAdo(2'-deoxyadenosine) of 2'-deoxyribonucleosides by dynamic method. The composition of mobile phase was 90/10 vol.% (water/MeOH). With an increase in the injection volumes, the retention times were shorter and the peak shapes were triangle-shaped, so Langmuir-type isotherm was assumed. The Langmuir adsorption parameters were estimated by PIM (pulsed-input method), and the competitive Langmuir adsorption isotherm was further utilized. For the sample of the dUrd and dGuo whose retention times were relatively short, the agreement of between the calculated value and experimental data was fairly good in both single and multi-components, but for the dAdo, the last eluting component, some deviations were caused by non-linear and non-ideal properties.

  • Resent research on heavy metal biosorption has been focused on its mechanisms and principles. For effective metal removal/recoverythe process design has to be optimized for every type of application. That is most efficiently carried out based on computer simulations by means of mathematical models of the process. Therefore, the study on sorption equilibrium isotherm is important and the methodology wassummarized here involving both one metal and multi-metal systems.

  • Eosin yellow is used a dye and colorant but it is harmful toxic substance. In this paper, batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for eosin yellow adsorption by activated carbon with varying the operating variables like pH, initial concentration, contact time. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. By estimated Langmuir constant value, $R_L$=0.067-0.083, and Freundlich constant value, $\frac{1}{n}=0.237-0.267$, this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of eosin yellow. From calculated Temkin constant, value, B=1.868-2.855 J/mol, and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant, value, E=5.345-5.735 kJ/mol, this adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation coefficient($r^2$=0.995-0.998). The mechanism of the adsorption process was determined two step like as boundary and intraparticle diffusion.

  • The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon were investigated. The experiment was carried out by batch experiment with the variables of the amount of the adsorbent, the initial concentration of the dye, the contact time and the temperature. The isothermal adsorption equilibrium was best applied to the Freundlich equation in the range of 293 ~ 313 K. From the separation factor (${\beta}$) of Freundlich equation, it was found that adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon could be the appropriate treatment method. The adsorption energy (E) obtained from the Dubinin- Radushkevich equation shows that the adsorption process is a physical adsorption process. From the kinetic analysis of the adsorption process, pseudo second order model is more consistent than pseudo first order model. It was found that the adsorption process proceeded to a spontaneous process and an endothermic process through Gibbs free energy change ($-0.1096{\sim}-10.5348kJ\;mol^{-1}$) and enthalpy change ($+151.29kJ\;mol^{-1}$). In addition, since the Gibbs free energy change decreased with increasing temperature, adsorption reaction of murexide by granular activated carbon increased spontaneously with increasing temperature. The entropy change ($147.62J\;mol^{-1}\;K^{-1}$) represented the increasing of randomness at the solid-solution interface during the adsorption reaction of murexide by activated carbon.

  • Liquid phase adsorption of organic compounds solution on the activated carbon fiber was measured by chromatographic method in a packed column. Adsorption equilibrium constant Ka of dextrose solution was found to be $72.5cm^3/g$ on ACF without bacteria growth, while in the bacterial ACF packed column Ka was $87.9cm^3/g$. It is suggested that for biological ACF there is a large contribution of bacterial activity to the adsorption equilibrium constant. Axial dispersion coefficient Ez was determined to be in proportional to flow rate and Pe=dpu/Ez independent or existence or bacteria.

  • Two types of synthetic zeolites, commercially used (Z-WK) and synthesized by coal fly ash (Z-C1), and raw coal fly ash(F-C1) were examined for its kinetics and adsorption capacities of cobalt. Experimental data are fitted with kinetic models, Lagergen $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ order models, and four types of adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Koble-Corrigan. Synthesized zeolite (Z-C1) which had 1.51 of Si/Al ratio was synthesized by raw coal fly ash from a thermal power plant. Adsorption capacities with three types of adsorbents, Z-WK, Z-C1, and F-C1, were in the order of Z-C1 (94.15 mg/g) > F-C1 (92.94 mg/g) > Z-WK (88.56mg/g). The adsorption kinetics of Z-WK and Z-C1 with cobalt could be accurately described by a pseudo-second-order rate equation. The adsorption isotherms of Z-WK and Z-C1 with cobalt were well fitted by the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson equation. Z-C1 will be used to remove cobalt in water as a more efficient absorbent.

  • The reuse of spent coffee powder has been researched for environmental engineering applications such as adsorbents of organic/inorganic pollutants. In this study adsorption equilibrium tests and adsorption kinetics tests for the removal of aqueous organic pollutant (methylene blue) were conducted using spent coffee powder, granular activated carbon, and powdered activated carbon. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity of three adsorbents followed the order of powdered activated carbon (178.6 mg/g) > spent coffee powder (60.6 mg/g) > granular activated carbon (15.6 mg/g). The results of adsorption kinetics tests also indicated that spent coffee powder had higher kinetic parameters than granular activated carbon for pseudo 1st and 2nd order kinetics. The high performance of spent coffee powder might be due to its porous surface like those of granular and powdered activated carbons and smaller particle size comparing with granular activated carbon.

  • Two solution to soil ratios, 2 : 1 and 5 : 1 were tested to determine the appropriate ratio in the sorption measurement off. sulfoxide for Wahiawa soil samples, 0-20 cm, 40-60 cm and 100-120 cm. and Salinas soil samples, 0-15cm and 115-130cm. One ${\mu}$ mol/L f.sulfoxide was used as an initial equilibration concentration. Sorption of f.sulfoxide at 5 : 1 ratio showed appropriate mixing, while sorption at 2 : 1 ratio indicated insufficient mixing during the various batch equilibration times (4, 12, 24 and 48 hours). For most samples the degree of sorption was about 20-50%, which falls in the desired range (20-80%) at the 5 : 1 ratio. An exception was with the low-sorptive Wahiawa subsoil in which the ranges were below 20%. Thus the 5 : 1 ratio can be used for f.sulfoxide sorption measurement. Four equilibration times (4, 12, 24 and 48 hours) and four concentrations(0.1, 1.0, 5.0 and $10{\mu}mol/L$) were used to determine the appropriate equilibration time for Wahiawa and Salinas soils. Sorption increased over all equilibration times, indicating no complete equilibrium within 48 hours. Apparent equilibrium was reached in 4 hours, and sorption increased slowly until 24 hours and faster thereafter, except for the Wahiawa soil, 100-120 cm. The recommended equilibration time is 24 hours, since it may eliminate the insufficient sorption and yet avoid undesirable transformation.

  • Batch experiments were carried out for adsorption equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the brilliant brown R onto granular activated carbon. The operating variables studied were the initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm by linear regression method. The equilibrium process was well described by Freundlich isotherm model and from the determined separation factor (1/n), granular activated carbon could be employed as an effective treatment for the removal of bismarck brown R. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption processes were found to confirm the pseudo second order model with a good correlation and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) increased with increasing adsorption temperature. Thermodynamic parameters like the activation energy, change of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The activation energy was determined as 8.73 kJ/mol for 100 mg/L. It was found that the adsorption of bismarck brown R on the granular activated carbon was physical process. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.59~-4.92 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = +26.34 kJ/mol) are indicative of the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process.
