A simple measuring device is proposed, and its performance is examined in an adsorption process separating a gas mixture. The sensor is made of a quartz crystal resonator and solid adsorbent to detect the target component. Micro-particle carbon cryogel(MCC) is utilized as the adsorbent, and the gas mixture of air and i-butane are separated in a column containing bamboo activated carbon. Two devices are placed at the inlet and outlet of the column. The measurements are compared with those of GC outcome to prove the measurements are effective. The experimentally proved system is simple and capable to be implemented in an in-line system with on-line measurement.
In this study, estimation of nonlinear adsorption isotherms(Langmuir & Freundlich adsorption isotherm) and advection-dispersion model parameters was conducted using genetic algorithm(GA) for Zn and Cd adsorption. Estimated parameters of nonlinear adsorption isotherms, which were obtained from the optimization process using genetic algorithm(GA), are nearly same with the parameters obtained from a linearization process of the nonlinear isotherms. Estimated effective diffusion coefficients, which were obtained from a finite element analysis of the advection-dispersion model and an optimization procedure using the genetic algorithm, for the metals were approximately in the order of $10^{-7}cm^2/s$ which could be obtained based on the linear distribution coefficient. The effective diffusion coefficients based on the nonlinear retardation factors were in the range of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}cm^2/s$. As a result, the correlation coefficient obtained between the measured and calculated concentration was over 0.9 which means that the genetic algorithm should be successfully applied to estimate the unknown parameters of the nonlinear adsorption isotherms and advection-dispersion model.
Fuel oxygenates, such as Methyl tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is additive in gasoline used to reduce air pollution. Gasoline components and fuel additives can leak: form underground storage tanks. MTBE is far more water soluble than gasoline hydrocarbons like BTEX then it travels at essentially the same velocity as groundwater. MTBE in drinking water causes taste and odor problems. Therefore, the purpose of the this study is to examine the ability of ground tire to sorb MTBE in water. The study consisted of running both batch and column tests to determine the sorption capacity, the required sorption equilibration time, and the flow through utilization efficiency of ground tire. The batch test result indicated that ground tire can attain equilibrium sorption capacities about 0.5 mg of MTBE. The result of column test indicate that ground tire has on the 36% utilization rate. Finally, it is clear that ground tire represented an attractive and relatively inexpensive sorption medium for a MTBE. Authors thought that to determine the economic costs of ground tire utilization, the cost to sorb a given mass of contaminant by ground tire will have to be compared to currently accepted sorption media. The cost comparison will also have to include regeneration and disposal cost.

Iron sand, having iron as a major component, was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II) or Pb(II). To investigate the stability of iron sand at acidic condition, dissolution of Fe and Al was studied with variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4.5. Iron concentration in the extracted solution was below the emission regulation of wastewater even at a strong acidic condition, pH 2. Although an important concentration of aluminum was extracted at pH 2, the dissolution greatly decreased above pH 3. This stability test suggests that application of iron sand has little problem in the treatment of wastewater above pH 3. Adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto iron sand was investigated in a batch and a column test. In case of Cu(II), rapid adsorption was noted, showing 50% removal within 2 hrs, and then reached a near complete equilibrium after 24 hrs. Adsorption was favorable at higher pH in each metal ion and showed a near complete removal above pH 6, indicating a typical cationic-type adsorption. From the adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the concentration of each metal ion, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was identified as 2,170 mg/kg 및 3,450 mg/kg, respectively.

Manganese-Coated Sand(MCS) prepared with three different methods were applied in the treatment of soluble $Mn^{2+}$ in batch and column experiments. In the bench-scale MCS preparation, the coating efficiency of manganese on the surface of sand increased as the dosage of initial Mn(II) increased. The removed amount of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by MCS increased as the solution pH increased, following a typical anionic-type adsorption. The removed amounts of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ through adsorption was quite similar over the entire pH range, without depending on the contents of Mn on the surface of sand as well as coating methods. When NaClO was used an oxidant, the removed amount of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by MCS increased as the concentration of NaClO increased, This trend might be explained by the increased removal efficiency through coating of manganese oxides produced from oxidation of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ by NaClO on the surface of MCS. From the bench-scale column experiments, the breakthrough of $Mn^{2+}$ occurred after 4,100 bed volume without presence of NaClO while 1.6-times delayed breakthrough of $Mn^{2+}$ was observed in the presence of NaClO. This result also supports that the removal efficiency of the soluble $Mn^{2+}$ could be enhanced by using NaClO.
The influencing factors to remove phosphate were evaluated by converter slag (CS). Experiments were performed by batch tests using different CS sizes and column test. Solutions were prepared at the different pH and concentrations. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained over 98% with the finest particle size, $CS_a$ within 2 hours in batch tests. The removal efficiency was increased in the order of decreasing size with same amount of CS for any pH of solutions. The adsorption data were well fitted to Freundlich isotherm. From the column experiment, the specific factors were revealed that the breakthrough removal capacity (BRC) $x_b/m_{cs}$, was decreased by increasing the influent concentration. The breakthrough time, tb was lasted shorter as increasing the influent concentration. The pH drop simultaneously led to lower BRC drop during the experimental hours. The relation between the breakthrough time and the BRC to influent concentration was shown in the logarithmic decrease. Results suggested that the large surface area of CS possessed a great potential for adsorptive phosphate removal. Consequently particle size and initial concentration played the major influencing factors in phosphate removal by converter slag.

Crab shell particles (Protunus trituberculatus) and activated carbon (Norit 0.8 SUPRA) were used as packing material in a fixed-bed column. When 1 g crab shell was added in the column packed with 10 g activated carbon. breakthrough to influent 10 mg Pb/L occurred at 1520 bed volumes. as compared to 380 bed volumes for 10 g activated carbon only. Addition of crab shell particles into activated carbon column resulted in increased uptake of lead. The dramatic improvement might be attributed to an increase in $co_3{^{2-}}$ and $OH^-$ available for the binding of lead. From the result of analyses, the major mechanism of lead removal was based on dissolution of $CaCO_3$ in the crab shell followed by precipitation of $Pb_3(CO_3)_2(OH)_{2(s)}$ on the surface of activated carbon. The lead uptake increased two fold as the influent lead concentration was increased from 10 to 50 mg/L. However, it decreased by 40% as the influent pH was lowered from 5.0 to 3.0.
A dynamic biofilter model was suggested to integrate the effect of biofilter-medium adsorption capacity on the removal efficiency of volatile organic compound (VOC) contained in waste air. In particular, the suggested biofilter model is composed of four components such as biofilm, gas phase, sorption volume and adsorption phase and is capable of predicting the unsteady behavior of biofilter-operation. The process-lumping model previously suggested was limited in the application for the treatment of waste air since it was derived under the assumption that the adsorbed amount of VOC equilibrated with biofilter-media would be proportional to the concentration of dissolved VOC in the sorption volume of biofilter-media. Therefore a Freundlich adsorption isotherm was integrated into a robust biofilter process-lumping model applicable to a wide range of VOC concentration. The values of model parameters related to biofilter-medium adsorption were obtained from the dynamic adsorption column experiments in the preceding article and literature survey. Furthermore a separate biofilter experiment was conducted to treat waste air containing ethanol and the experimental result was compared with the model predictions with various values of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$). The obtained value of Thiele modulus (${\phi}$) was close to 0.03.
In this study, column diffusion tests for Cd and Zn were conducted at $15^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ to investigate a temperature effect on effective diffusion coefficient. An increase in temperature from $15^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ caused up to ten times larger diffusion coefficient for each heavy metal. Besides, it caused the increased retardation of heavy metals, and hence the effective diffusion coefficient should be overestimated as we use an overestimated retardation factor to calibrate the coefficient. The results of sequential extraction analyses showed that Zn was occluded in carbonate phase and this trend was getting prominent with the increase in temperature. As for Cd, it was partitioned mainly in the exchangeable phase(over 60%) at any temperature.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the purification capacity of pollutants by column test with the tidal flat sediment. Sediment materials were taken from Chunjangdae tidal flat which located in Chungnam Seochungun. The column tests were conducted on four conditions(R1 : raw sewage filtered by G2 filter, R2 : sterilized sewage after filtered by GF/C filter, R3 : R2 /filtered(membrane) seawater (1:1), R4 : R2 /filtered(membrane) seawater(1:2)). The results of this study may be summarized as followed ; The removed COD by column tests were increased according to increasing the quantity of sewage. During the column tests of 580min, the total removed ammonia nitrogen were 90.1mg for R1, 81.0mg for R2, 27.6mg for R3 and 4.1mg for R4. The result was similar to COD experiment. During the 580min, the total removed total-phosphates were 3.4mg for R1, 4.2mg for R2, 5.6mg for R3 and 2.0mg for R4. The removal efficiency of Pb and Cd for R3 and R4 reactor were higher than R1 and R2 reactor. The remove of heavy metal by the column test was high in sample with seawater. But in the initial 20min, the adsorbed Pb and Cd showed about 3% of the total adsorbed Pb and Cd during 580min.
