Ramjet mode combustion test was performed for a dual-mode ramjet engine model. The engine model consists of an air intake, a combustor and a nozzle. The combustor in the model has a large backward-facing step, designed to be used as a part of a rocket-based combined cycle engine. The test was performed at the flight speed of Mach 5 and the altitude of 24 km. Strong combustion was established only when the fuel was injected from both of the bottom-side and cowl-side wall. When the total fuel stoichiometric ratio was 1.0, distributed as 0.5 on the cowl side and 0.5 on the bottom side, the flow became subsonic at some portion in the combustor by thermal choking, i.e., ramjet mode was established for this condition.

The intervention area located at rear hot cell can be contaminated by hot cell maintenance work. For effective decontamination of the intervention floor a wet type decontamination device was developed. The device was assembled with a brush rotating part, a washing liquid supplying part, an intake part for recovering contaminated liquid and a device moving cart part. The device was made of stainless steel for easy decontamination and corrosion resistance. The function test carried out at intervention area of the PIE facility showed good performance.

Turbulent flow analysis around a wind turbine blade was performed to evaluate the power performance of offshore wind turbine. Fluent package was utilized to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in non-inertial rotating coordinates. The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence closure and the grid system combining structured and unstructured grids was generated. In the first, lift and drag forces of 2-D foil section were calculated and compared with existing experimental data for the validation. Then torque and thrust of the wind turbine blade having NACA 4-series sections were calculated with fixed pitch angle and rpm. Tip speed ratio was varied by changing wind speed. In the next, three kinds of end plate were attached at the tip of blade in order to increase the power of the wind turbine. Among them the end plate attached at the suction side of the blade was found to be most effective. Furthermore, performance analysis with tilt angle and rake was also performed.

The vortex cup is proposed as a method to transport sensitive products such as silicon wafers in manufacturing. Air through the inlet nozzle located at the top of the vortex cup flows to form a swirl in the cylinder. The flow located in the lower part of the thin gap between the vortex cup and the bottom surface escapes and generates a negative pressure that can lift objects. In this research, three-dimensional numerical simulation of the air flow field in a vortex cup is performed, and a comparison of the simulation and experimental results shows very good agreement. In addition, the vortex cup length and shape that affect the negative pressure were applied to the analysis. Through the simulation results, optimum conditions for the vortex cup shape were proposed.

In this study, the conventional plane tip, double squealer tip, and various groove tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shapes on tip surface heat transfer coefficient distributions. Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured using a hue-detection based transient liquid crystals technique. Two tip gap clearances of 1.5% and 2.3% of blade span were investigated and the Reynolds number based on cascade exit velocity and chord length was $2.48{\times}10^5$. Results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip surface with various grooved tips were lower than those with plane tip blade. The overall heat transfer coefficient on grooved along suction side tip was lower than that on the squealer tip.

Utricularia forms small, but complex carnivorous trap along the stem either in water or in soil depending upon species. The shapes and sizes of the traps, appendages, and trichomes are known to differ among aquatic, terrestrial and epiphytic species. In the present study, the morphology and microstructure of the trap in aquatic Utricularia japonica and terrestrial U. livida were examined using light and electron microscopy. The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of trap features between the aquatic and terrestrial species. The trap was found to be comprised of a thin walled bladder with numerous capitate trichomes, two-armed bifid and four-armed quadrifid glands in both species; however, the traps of the two species were different in size, and number and morphology of the trichomes and glands. Aquatic Utricularia was chlorenchymatous with chloroplasts distributed throughout the body, whereas the terrestrial species was translucent without plastids due to an adaptation to underground habitats. Furthermore, the former differed considerably in that the traps developed antenna and appendages around the entrance area. A peculiar trap entrance was also noted in U. livida, which exhibited radiating rows of various trichomes within funnel-shaped tissue. A large number of glandular trichomes covered the entrance area and door surface with four trigger hairs each in the aquatic form but only two in the terrestrial form. The glandular trichomes near the door secreted a large amount of mucilage that temporarily composed the velum in the U. japonica, however, it was not observed in the terrestrial species. All of the aforementioned features were highly related in their structure and function during carnivorous mechanism in Utricularia. The current findings provide important data for further comparison of the different life forms within Utricularia.

Cavitation refers to a phenomenon in which empty spaces occur in a fluid due to changes in pressure and a velocity. When a liquid moves at a high speed, the pressure drops below the vapor pressure, and vapor bubbles are generated in the liquid. This study used CFD to analyze the flow of fluid machinery used in marine and offshore plants. The goals are to ensure the validity of the analysis method for marine propellers in an open water test, to increase the forward ratio, and to use FLUENT to understand the flow pattern due to cavitation. A three-dimensional analysis was performed and compared with experimental data from MOERI. The efficiency was highest at advance ratios of 0.7 - 0.8. Thrust was generated due to the difference between the pressure surface and the suction surface, and it was estimated that bubbles would be generated in the vicinity of the back side surface rather than the face side of the propeller, resulting in more cavitation. The cavitation decreased sharply as the advance ratio increased. The thrust and torque coefficients were comparable to those of the MOERI experimental data except at the advance ratio of 1, which showed a difference of less than 5%. Therefore, it was confirmed that CFD can evaluate an open water propeller test.

In the present study, numerical simulation was performed to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a ducted fan-upper/lower vanes system in hover. Sensitivity analysis of aerodynamic forces for a system component was conducted with the deflection angle of upper vanes varying but at the constant rotational speed and the collective pitch angle of fan blades. Then, vane control performance and duct airload distributions were analyzed in detail to physically understand operating mechanisms of individual vane and interference effect between duct and vanes. Finally, new control concept of operating upper vanes has been proposed to improve the control performance of the full configuration. It is found that the side force and rolling moment of upper vanes increase linearly with the variation of those deflection angle; however, the total side force is significantly small due to the reaction force acted on the duct. It is also found that upper vanes close to the duct contraction side have a key role in changing vane control forces. It is revealed that the duct suction pressure is induced by the interaction with the suction side of upper vanes, while duct pressure recovery by the interaction with the pressure side, leading to increase in duct asymmetric force. When four upper vanes are kept in situ at 0° deflection angle or removed, the total control performance was improved with duct asymmetric force reduced and the total magnitude of roll remarkably increasing up to 80%.
