A finite element analysis was performed for new earth retention system that is a kind of truss tower with non-supported excavation. A 2D finite element model was adopted in this study to investigate the behavior of the earth retention system. Just because this non-supported truss tower system is too complex to model in 2D plain-strain condition to itself, so have to simplify it by the conception of equivalent rigidity. The horizontal displacement of the wall and lateral earth pressure distribution on the wall were computed. And it is compared with NAVFAC design manual.

Currently, large-scale and deep-depth excavation construction is being carried out in the vicinity of structures due to overdensity in urban areas in Korea. It is very important to secure the safety of retaining structures and underground structures for adjacent excavation work in urban areas. The safety of facilities is managed by introducing an automated measurement system. However, the utilization of the results of the automated measurement system is very low. Conventional evaluation techniques rely only on the maximum value of the measured data, and can overestimate abnormal behavior. In this study, we intend to improve the analysis technique for the automation measurement results. In order to identify abnormal behavior of facilities, a time-series analysis method for automated measurement data was presented. By applying a probability statistical analysis technique to a vast amount of data, highly reliable results were derived. In this study, the analysis method and evaluation method that can process the vast amount of data of facilities have been improved.

In conventional method of supporting soil shuttering wall during excavation a system of struts and wales to provide cross-lot bracing is common in trench excavations and other excavations of limited width. This method, however, becomes difficult and costly to be adopted for large excavations since heavily braced structural systems are required. Another expensive and unsafe situations are expected when temporary struts must be removed for the construction of underground structures. This paper introduces innovative strut systems which can be used as permanent underground structures after its role as brace system to resist earth pressure during excavation phase. Underground structural system suggested from architect is checked against the soil lated pressures before the analysis of stresses developed from gravity loads. In this technology, named SPS(Struts as Permanent System), retaining wall is installed first and excavation proceeds until the first level of bracing is reached. Braces used as struts during excavation will serve as permanent girders when buildings are in operation. Simultaneous construction of underground and superstructure can proceeds when excavation ends with the last level of braces being installed. In this paper, construction sequence and the calculation concept are explained in detail with some photo illustrations. SPS technology was applied to three selected buildings. One of them was completed and two others are being constructed Many sensors were installed to monitor the behavior of retaining wall, braces as column in terms of stress change and displacement. Adjacent ground movement was also obtained. These projects demonstrate that SPS technology contributes to the speed as well as the economy involved in construction.
A preliminary study is conducted to develop seismic design guidelines for temporary retaining structures in a deep excavation. The study involved a comprehensive literature review of the seismic design standards applied domestically and internationally, as well as various methods to calculate seismic earth pressure for pseudostatic analysis. The FLAC 2D, a two-dimensional finite difference analysis program, was utilized to perform pseudostatic analysis using the Semirigid pressure method, Wood method, and Mononobe-Okabe method. The resulting analysis data for the wall moment and axial force of the strut were compared with the dynamic analysis outcomes to evaluate the applicability of pseudostatic analysis. The Semirigid pressure method predicted the most reasonable moment for Stiff walls experiencing horizontal displacements up to 0.4%H. Predicting the axial force of the strut exactly was challenging because the pseudostatic analysis cannot consider dynamic soil-structure interaction; however, it is deemed available for conservative preliminary review to ensure safety.
Observational results of ground movement during the construction were very different from those predicted during the analysis of design step because of the uncertainty of the numerical analysis modelling, the soil parameter, and the condition of a construction field, etc., however accurately numerical analysis method was applied for prediction of ground movement per the excavation step. Therefore, the management system through the construction field measurement should be achieved for grasping the situation during the excavation. Until now, the measurement system restricted by 'Absolute Value Management system'analyzing only the stability of present step has been executed. So, it was difficult to expect the prediction of ground movement fur the next excavation step. In this situation, this study developed 'The Management system TOMAS-EXCAV'consisted of 'Absolute value management system'analyzing the stability of present step and 'Prediction management system'expecting the ground movement of next excavation step and analyzing the stability of next excavation step by 'Back Analysis'. TOMAS-EXCAV could be applied to all the uncertainty of earth retaining structures analysis by connecting 'Forward analysis program'and 'Back analysis program'and optimizing the main design variables using SQP-MMFD optimization method through measurement results. The applicability of TOMAS-EXCAV was confirmed by back analysis selecting two earth retains construction fields.
Soil nailing is ground reinforcement method using the shear strength of ground and the pullout shear resistance force of nail. It is mainly used for reinforcement of cut slopes, earth retaining structures and retaining walls, etc. It may be designed considering the pullout resistance of nail in the case of earth retaining structure and retaining wall, but it should be designed considering not only pullout resistance but also shear and bending resistance in the case of slope. However, conservative designs considering only pullout resistance are being done and most of the studies are about increasing pullout resistance by improving of material, shape and construction method of nail. Actually, Shear bending deformations occur centering on the active surface in ground reinforced with the nail. The grout with relatively low strength is destroyed and separated from the reinforcing material. As a result, the ground is collapsed while reducing the frictional resistance rapidly. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the method to increase the shear resistance while preventing separation of nail and grout body. In this study, an experimental study was conducted on new soil nailing method which can increase shear resistance by forming protrusions through pressurized grouting after installing a packer on the outside of deformed bar.
With the recent increase in development projects centered on urban areas, the construction of building structures is increasing in areas adjacent to the urban railway operation section. In this case, since ground vibration is generated by the train in operation and affects the adjacent structure, the building structure needs appropriate vibration reduction against train vibration generated at the adjacent location from the desing phase. However, the vibration levels calculated vary depending on the train vibration evaluation method, which means that the implementation of vibration reduction may vary depending on the train vibration evaluation method. Therefore, this study calculated the vibration level according to ground conditions, tunnel depth and separation distance between vibration sources and adjacent structures using numerical analysis and train vibration evaluation methods, and compared them to designning phase. And the appropriate separation distance between the tunnel and the adjacent structure was evaluated by comparing the vibration level with the allowable standards. As a result of the study, the Ungar and Bender evaluation method is evaluated as the most appropriate among the train vibration evaluation methods, and the appropriate separation distance between the tunnel and the adjacent structure is evaluated to be more than 4.5D.
The earth pressure acting on underground structure was measured by application of the instrumentation system in the subway construction site constructed by the method of cut-and-cover tunnel. The measured earth pressure was compared with the earth pressure obtained from the existed theoretical equation, and the actual earth pressure diagram acting on the underground structure was investigated. As a result of investigation, the vertical earth pressure is mainly affected by the embankment height, and the lateral earth pressure is significantly affected by whether the existence of earth retaining structures or not. The measured vertical earth pressure is very similar to the theoretical earth pressure proposed by Bierbaumer. The measured lateral earth pressure is closed to the active earth pressure proposed by Rankine rather than the earth pressure at rest. The coefficient of earth pressure in soil deposit layer is about 0.35, and the coefficient in soft rock deposit layer is about 0.21. For design and construction the underground structures, therefore, it is reasonable estimation that the lateral earth pressure acting on structures installed in soil deposit layers is an average value between active earth pressure and earth pressure at rest. In rock deposit layers, the lateral earth pressure acting on structure is an active earth pressure only.

In a large scale of excavation for the foundation of large-sized structures and underground structures, a considerable amount of earth pressure can occur. Steel beams that have been used to form a temporary structure to support earth pressure may be less economical and less efficient in resisting the high earth pressure. To cope with this problem, PCT(Precast Concrete Truss) system has been devised and investigated both experimentally and analytically. A proper connection method between the concrete truss members was proposed to accommodate fast assembly and disassembly. Full-scale test of PCT system was performed to verify the load-carrying capacity of the PCT system including the connections. The test results were compared with those of structural analysis. The test specimen which corresponds to PCT strut attained the ultimate load without buckling, but the detail of connector members needs to be improved. It is expected that precast concrete truss members can be efficiently incorporated into a temporary structure for deep and large excavation by replacing conventional steel beams.
The stability of urban railway foundation can be a problem due to the excessive settlement. The settlement at the base of railway is monitored by the installed settlement gauges. The piezometer and pore water pressure measurement device are installed to measure the variation of pore water pressure and ground water table during the continuous pullout of sheet piles which were used for the braced cut. The settlement of railway is predicted with using the computer program CAIN RDA. The input data for the numerical analysis are obtained from the field soil exploration data and soil properties. The surcharged load from landscaping over the ground surface and the weight of train are taken into account for the estimation of settlement. As a result of numerical analysis, the range of settlement for six different Sites is from 5.94 cm to 12.77 cm. Thus, the settlement level at Site 2 is occurred 12.77 cm which is higher than the allowable settlement of 10 cm.
