A taxonomic Revision of Genus Carcharhinus (Pisces: Elasmobranchii) with Description of Two New Recrods in Korea (한국산 흉상어속 어류의 분류학적 재검토 및 2미기록종)

  • The taxonomic revision of the genus Carcharhinus in Korea was made based on the shark specimens collected in the western and southern coasts including Cheju Isl. of Korea from July 1996 to April 1997. Five species were recognized from the Korean waters and they are described herein. Among them, two species of Carcharhinus dussumieri (Valenciennes, 1839) and Carcharhinus sorrah (Valenciennes, 1839) were collected for the first time from the Cheju Isl. coast of Korea. Carcharhinus dussumieri differs from other species of genus Carcharhinus in following morphological characters: a black or dark spot on the sencond dorsal fin but no other markings, a small first triangular dorsal fin and a second dorsal fin with a short inner margin, and Carcharhinus sorrah: conspicuous black tips on the ventral caudal lobe, pectoral and second dorsal fins, and low second dorsal with a inner margin.

Development of a Dedicated CAM System for Human Bust Machining (흉상환조가공 전용 CAM 시스템 개발)

  • We have developed a prototype dedicated CAM system for machining a human bust that is not a relief. The input is STL file format, and the output is NC-codes for machining on a 3-axis general purpose CNC milling machine with an index table attached. Main modules are STL import, STL transformation, modeling jig/fixture, master model generation, and calculation of machining area. System architecture is proposed and main modules are briefly described. We adopted the angle between tool-axis and the surface normal vector to calculate machining area, and tested at several degrees.

  • 어느 나라든 과학기술의 진작은 대통령이 챙겨야 약효가 있음이 입증되고 있다. 새 정부는 과학기술 훈장제도를 도입해 과학기술인들의 사기를 높이고 신바람 나게 일할 수 있는 여건을 조성해 주어야 하겠다. 특히 뛰어난 업적을 세운 과학기술인들을 기리기 위해 흉상 등 조형물을 세워주고 대학건물이나 거리이름도 저명한 과학기술인의 이름을 붙여주어 과학기술인들의 의욕을 높여주었으면 한다.

New Record of the Spadenose Shark, Scoliodon laticaudus (Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae) from South Sea, Korea (Scoliodon속 어류의 1 미기록종, Scoliodon laticaudus)

  • The spadenose shark, Scoliodon laticaudus, belongs to the family carcharhinidae was described as the first record from Korea based on a single specimen collected from the South Sea of Korea. The species is characterized by having a greatly depressed and trowel-shaped head, a depressed and long snout, triangular pectoral fins, and posterior tip of the first dorsal fin reaching the middle of pelvic fin. We propose a new Korean names of the genus Scoliodon and the species S. laticaudus as "Nab-jag-ju-dung-i-sang-eo sog" and "Nab-jag-ju-dung-i-sang-eo", respectively.

역사속 과학인물 - 적리병균 세계 최초 개발한 세균학자 '일본 시가 키요시'

  • 1897년 적리의 병균을 세계 최초로 발견해 명성을 떨친 일본의 세균학자 시가 키요시는 1920년부터 11여년간 한국에 근무하면서 조선총독부 의원장을 거쳐 경성제국대학 총장을 역임했다. 이러한 사실은 그의 고향인 센다이시의 한 공원의 흉상에 새겨진 이력 소개문에서 우연히 발견한 것으로 우리나라의 의료사에도 그의 이름이 나오지 않는다. 1896년 동경대를 졸업한 다음해 적리균을 발견해 28세때 세계적인 학자로 발돋움한 시가 키요시의 생애를 조명해 본다.

  • To investigate the fishes of the Arafura Sea of Indonesia, fish specimens were collected by scientists on board Korean trawlers fishing in this region during June 1994 and March 1996. A total of 137 fish species were identified, of which 40 occurred in both 1994 and 1996. In cartilaginous fishes, fishes from the families Carcharhinidae and Dasyatididae were dominant in terms of number of species and in teleost fishes, dominant species were those from the families Engraulididae, Carangidae, Sciaenidae and Tetraodontidae. This study revealed that Sardinelia longiceps, Setipinna melanochir, Cypselurus hiraii, Podothecus sachi, Nemipterus aurora, Johnius grypotus, Moolgarda perusi were collected for the first time in the Arafura Sea.

  • Presented in this paper is a prototype of dedicated CAM system for a human bust, not a relief, machining. The input of this system is a STL file which comes from measuring machine, and the output is machining data for a 3-axis CNC milling machine with an index table. The system consists of three main modules, which are shape import and transformation, modeling of jig and fixture, and calculation of machining area. Proposed system architecture and the main modules are briefly described. To get machining region for semi-finish and finish machining stages, two concepts of machining area, machinable and scannable, were tried. Machinable area was suitable for the purpose.

  • Moire topography method is a well-known non-contacting 3-D measuement method. Recently, the automatic 3-D measurement by moire topography has been required since the method was frequently applied to the engineering and medical fields. 3-D measurement using projection moire topography is very attractive because of it's high measuring speed and high sensitivity. In this paper, using two-wavelength method of projection moire topography tested to measuring object with the 2x-ambiguity problem. Experimental results prove that the proposed scheme is capable of finding absolute fringe orders, so that the 2x-ambiguity problem can be effectively overcome so as to treat large step discontinuities in measured objects.
