  • This study was aimed to verify the validity of the flexural toughness evaluation method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete(SFRS) currently being adopted by Korea Highway Corporation(KHC). Total 33 beam specimens using six different kinds of steel fiber products were prepared at tunnel construction sites and flexural toughness tests were executed at laboratory. Equivalent flexural strengths and toughness quotients were evaluated from the tests following the KHC guide iud these were compared with the quality grades determined under the guides proposed by ASTM, ITA and EFNARC. To discard the disadvantage that the toughness quotient could be influenced by flexural strength when following the KHC guide, a modification substituting the designed flexural strength for the flexural strength in the toughness quotient calculation formula was proposed to rate the quality of SFRS more adequately.

  • This research initially suggest flexural toughness density as a key parameter describing energy absorption capacity of High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites [HPFRCC] regardless of the size of specimen. Two types of high strength steel fibers, Hooked and Twisted fiber, were used in two types of flexural specimen ($100{\times}100{\times}350mm^3$ and $150{\times}150{\times}500mm^3$) to estimate and validate the flexural toughness density.

  • This study deals with shotcrete reinforcing performance according to the amount of synthetic fiber (PP fiber) and proper evaluation method. The shotcrete compressive strength, flexural strength and flexural toughness were tested by setting the mixing amounts of steel fiber ($37.0kg/m^3$) and synthetic fiber (PP fiber) as parameters ($5.0kg/m^3$, $7.0kg/m^3$ and $9.0kg/m^3$). Particularly, circular panel flexural toughness test (Road and Traffic Authority, RTA) was performed to evaluate the shotcrete energy absorption capacity. As a result, the compressive strength and the bending strength of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete were large, but the flexural toughness of the synthetic fibe (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete was large. Therefore, synthetic fiber (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete is considered to have a reinforcing effect comparable to that of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Analysis of the relationship between the flexural toughness and the energy absorption capacity of synthetic fiber (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete revealed that the energy absorbing ability is exhibited at a flexural toughness lower than the allowable standard (3.0 MPa). (Class A: 2.55 MPa = 202J, Class B: 2.72 MPa = 282J, Class C: 3.07 MPa = 403J). As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the actual shotcrete support performance can be evaluated by evaluating the support performance of the shotcrete measured at less than the allowable standard (3.0 MPa) at the actual tunnel site.

  • An experimental study was carried out to estimate the flexural performance of steel fiberreinforced self-compacting concrete. Seven slabs with three different steel fiber-reinforced concretes were prepared to make beam specimens. After proper curing period, each slab was cut to five beams with a diamond saw. The beam specimen was tested with displacement control method to obtain load-deflection curve. As the results, the self-compacting concrete beam showed higher flexural strength, ductility and toughness index compared to the normal concrete beam. This means that steel fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete can be used more widely in the field of architecture and civil engineering because of its self-compactability and good mechanical properties.

  • Submarine tunnels are affected by the surrounding environments more than regular tunnels. Especially, they are often vulnerable to damage by salt in seawater. Seawater is more likely to affect reinforcing rods and steel fibers than concrete. Recently the usage of anti-corrosive fibers increases in the tunnel which is subject to the possibility of damage. By comparing the capability of polypropylene fibers with that of steel fibers, the proper mixture ratio is decided and the supporting capability of polypropylene fibers was tested using round panel and beam specimens. The results of this study can be of great use in selecting the fiber material and designing of fiber reinforced shotcrete of submarine tunnels.

  • This paper dealt with modification of effective crack length model (ECM) by adding Poisson's ratio term to evaluate fracture toughness of asphalt concrete which varies its material property by temperature. The original ECM model was developed for solid materials, such as cement concrete, and Poisson's ratio of materials was not considered. However, since asphalt concrete is sensitive to temperature variation and changes its Poisson's ratio by temperature, it should be taken into consideration to know exact fracture property under various temperatures. Four binders, including 3 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, were used to make a dense-grade asphalt mixture and 3-point bending test was peformed on notched beam at low temperatures, from -5oC to 35oC. Elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness were obtained from the test. The results showed that, since Poisson's ratio was considered, the more accurate test values could be obtained using modified ECM equation than original ECM. PMA mixture showed higher stiffness and fracture toughness than normal asphalt mixture under very low temperatures.

  • This study can be used to produce structurally efficient recycled PET fiber from used waste PET bottles and evaluated the bond performance of the three type of recycled PET fiber and cement matrix. Also, the flexural tests were performed on concrete reinforced using the three type of recycled PET fibers. The test results showed that the recycled PET fiber was significantly increased bond strength. The flexural test results are demonstrated that recycled PET fibers improved the flexural toughness of concrete. Based on the bond and flexural test results, the bond and flexural performance of embossed type recycled PET fibers were significantly better than those of the other shape fibers.

  • Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.

  • It is difficult to obtain accurate fracture toughness values using three point bending test(TPB) proposed by RILEM committees because the shape of load-deflection curve is irregular and final crack propagation occurs after some slow stable cracking. However, fracture toughness is easily obtained from crack initiation load in the disk test. In this paper, the fracture properties of high strength concrete disks with center-crack was investigated. For this purpose, the experimental results were compared with the results by finite element analysis(FEA). And the experimental fracture locus was compared with theoretical fracture locus. Also, the results of fracture properties for the degree of concrete strength are presented. It is concluded from this study that results from FEA with maximum stress theory were compared well with the results from experiment. And the degree of concrete strength was contributed to the crack initiation load and fracture toughness, but was not contributed to the failure angle. Also, The discrepancy of fracture locus between the maximum stress theory and the experiment for concrete is considered to depend upon a large energy requirement for inducing the mixed-mode and sliding mode fractures.
