Initiation and Growth Behavior of Small Surface Fatigue Crack in SiC Reinforced Aluminum Composite (SiC 강화 알루미늄기 복합재료의 표면미소 피로균열 발생 및 진전 거동)

  • Reversed plane bending fatigue tests were conducted on SiC particle reinforced and SiC whisker reinforced aluminum composite. The initiation and growth behaviors of small surface fatigue cracks were continuously monitored by the replica technique and the causes of fracture and fracture mechanism were investigated by SEM. The relationship between da/dn and $K_{max}$ show that da/dn increases in high stress level while decrease and again increases with increasing of $K_{max}$ in low stress level for two materials.

  • Among several fabrication processes of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites, the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process has attractive advantages in manufacturing complex net-or near-net-shape components at relatively low temperatures, easily controlling the microstructure of the matrix and obtaining the highest SiC purity level. However, it has disadvantages in that the ratio of residual pores in matrix is higher than other processes and processing time is relatively long. To reduce the residual porosity, the whisker-growing-assisted CVI process, which is composed of whisker growth and matrix filling steps has been developed. The whiskers grown before matrix filling may serve to divide the large natural pores between the fibers or bundles so that the matrix can be effectively filled into the finely divided pores. In this paper, the fundamentals of the CVI process for preparation of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites and some experimental results prepared by CVI and whisker-growing-assisted CVI processes are briefly introduced.

Preparation of AlN/SiC Whisker Composite by Reaction Sintering Process (반응소결법에 의한 AlN/SiC 휘스커 복합체의 제조)

  • Al powder, AlN powder, SiC whisker and sintering aids were wet-mixed, and then the specimens prepared with mixed powder were reacted by nitridation at 600∼1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. It was cleat that the higher nitridation and the more SiC whisker content were, the better bending strength was. The specimen of Al50/AlN50 reacted at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs had the nitridation percent of 97%, the shrinkage under 2%, and the relative density of 78%. And the maximum bending strength of reaction-bonded specimen was 250 MPa. The specimens completely nitrided were post-sintered at 1700, 1800 and 1900$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. The post-sintered body had the shrinkage under 6% and the relative density of 86%. Because of the formation of solid solution between AlN and SiC whisker over 1800$^{\circ}C$, the promotion of mechanical properties according to SiC whisker addition was not observed. The post-sintered body had the maximum bending strength of 195 MPa.

Synthesis and characterization of potassium titanate whisker by hydrothermal process (수열합성법을 이용한 티탄산칼륨 휘스커의 합성과 특성)

  • $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker have been synthesized by hydrothermal process at low temperature and pressure condition. The average length of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was about in the range of 300 nm to $1.5{\mu}m$. The average diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was 15 nm to 60 nm. The aspect ratio of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was below 12. The average length and diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker can be controlled by reaction temperature and time, KOH molar ratio. $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was synthesized from more than $210^{\circ}C$ and 4 h at reaction temperature and time. The length of the whisker is increased with increasing reaction temperature. Characterization of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was carried out using the XRD and FE-SEM.

  • AlN powder and whiskers were synthesized by direct nitridation of aluminum powder in pure nitrogen atmosphere. The nitridation reaction of aluminum powder was initiated by heating the sample to the ignition temperature and the reaction was finished in less than 3 minutes. AlN whisker-shaped morphology was observed predominantly when the sample was heated above 90$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Whisker and short rod shaped hydroxyapatite (Ca$_{10}$(PO$_4$)$_{6}$(OH)$_2$ with stoichiometric composition (Ca/P=1.62 -1.67, molar ratio) has been synthesized by hydrolysis and hydrothermal reaction of aqueous $\alpha$-Ca$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$($\alpha$-TCP) solution (pH 11), respectively. The shape of resultant HAp was mainly dependent on synthetic route and the microstructural development was on processing condition. In hydrolysis processing, the degree of intersection of whiskerlike particles and agglomeration in the apsis line increased with increasing reaction time. In hydrothermal synthesis, the reaction product obtained under excessive reaction time ($\geq$3 h at 20$0^{\circ}C$) was severely agglomerated without further grain growth above certain critical size (0.75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length, 0.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 11m in diameter).
